Enormous news for the sport, from what I have read they are going to promote the professional career of twenty (or more) professional newcomers (every source of money is needed due to heavy embargo); hoping they can also condone past defections.

And during 2016, the majority of the forum considered the allegedly “fearsome” Luis ‘King King’ Ortiz as the “best heavyweight in the world.”

For the record, I actively refrained from jumping on the “fearsome” Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz hype train and was ridiculed for doing so.

I did the same with Efe Ajagba… and was ridiculed for doing so.

And the same applies with Daniel Dubois… and once again, I was ridiculed for doing so.

Until all three men suddenly looked ordinary and lost.

And then I was ridiculed for gloating!

Some people were claiming Luis Ortiz was better than the prime version of Larry Holmes and 75% of this forum favoured the Cuban to beat Deontay Wilder.

That's good to hear.

I'd be interested to see what sort of effect this has on the nation. Boxing can be a big money sport. Pro boxing in a supposed communist nation may lead to some interesting squabbles.

As far as the landscape, I'd imagine most of the numbers will be seen in the sub-LH classes.

Andy Cruz unsuccessful in attempt to defect from Cuba

Cruz no-showed a tournament earlier this month and was attempting to reach the United States

The latest update on Cuban superstar Andy Cruz’s attempt to defect to the United States isn’t a good one. Taylor O’Higgins confirmed yesterday evening that Cruz’s efforts were unsuccessful, and that he is likely “back in Holguín, Cuba.” The Cuban Boxing Federation previously released a statement calling it a “serious indiscipline” and announcing that they were currently assessing a proper punishment.

It’s worth noting that this wasn’t necessarily Cruz’s one and only opportunity. Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara famously succeeded on their second attempts, and Cruz is still young enough to have a lengthy pro career even if he remains stuck in his home country for several more years. I’ll be rooting for him when and if his next chance comes, both for his well-being and my own selfish desire to see him showcase his generational talent on the world stage.
