Boxers who could have beaten Mike Tyson.

Post by NYDominican »

I would say that all of these boxers in their primes could have beaten Mike Tyson in his prime. ------ Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, and Riddick Bowe.

Had Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, or Ray Mercer have fought Mike Tyson, I would say that Joe, Ken, and Ray would have stood very good chances of beating Mike. Primarily if they could have weathered Tyson's very fast paced attacks in the first 5 rounds.

I think Mercer would beat Tyson 0 out of 10 times.

Shavers, Lyle and Mercer are quite bad picks. Tyson was levels above those. Mercer could at least last against Mike.

Louis, Marciano and Liston are also hard to be favored. They were much slower and hittable enough. Marciano would have more chances than the others, because he was extremely durable.

Norton could be a stylistically hard opponent for Tyson, but he was vulnerable for the likes of Mike.

Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Bowe and Lewis are good picks. Also, it's strange not to see Holyfield in the list, while there are the likes of Shavers, Lyle and Mercer there.

Lennox and Wlad don't have the chin to survive the speed and KO power imo.

How do you envision Vitali beating Mike Tyson? Serious question.

Holyfield is not a boxer who "could have" beaten Tyson; he is a boxer who did beat Tyson.

But then again he has Lewis in there, so I don't know. Holyfield certainly beat far more of Tyson than was left by the time he fought Lewis.

Surely, they did beat him, but apparently the OP was matching the 80s Tyson against them.

But Buster was a fast, fleet footed boxer who threw fluid combinations. Vitali is none of those things. He's tough and strong, but clearly not fast or a slick boxer. And Buster was landing beautiful three, four, even five punch combinations. Vitali didn't have the coordination to do that, and relied almost exclusively on the one-two.

As far as power, if you can't even knock over old, fat versions of Lennox, Sanders and Briggs with your best power punches, it doesn't seem realistic that you can make a dent in Mike Tyson.

I see no similarities between Douglas and Vitali at all.
