Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Tyrone Spong (July 16th)

Post by Enlightened-One »

Apparently the fight is being covered by Triller, with the event staged in Mexico.

Tyrone Spong is unbeaten, but has only win one bout since 2018.

Thoughts? :-?

It’s to clear the ring rust.

An excuse for Andy to train and lose weight.

I’m guessing Andy will be facing Luis Ortiz in the summer.

Surely if you were clearing ring rust to face ortiz in the summer you would book this pointless fight before mid july? Running out of summer...

ya that's all true, spong just seems like a really random guy to face. 1 fight in like 3 or 4 years, and his name hasnt really come up for a while until now.

if someone had asked me who andy ruiz would fight next, i dont think spong wouldve been in my top 50 guesses

I saw Spong fight in South Florida early in his career. He was knocking people out like Mike Tyson, but this is a big step up in competition. If Spong wins, he becomes a top ten contender. Spong is always in shape, so if Ruiz is not prepared, he could lose.

i think spong will get pounded, the 1 time he fought a half decent journeyman he got dropped and barely won a split decision. plus he's been inactive and only has like 30 rounds in his whole career

You may be right about what will happen. He had more fights as a kickboxer and BoxRec has his kickboxing record. I haven’t seen his recent fights, but he won by a split decision. All his other fights have been wins by knockout.

Spong won against the journeyman by a split decision. That journeyman lost by a split decision to Guillermo Jones, but Jones was past his prime in his mid 40s. All Spong’s other fights have been wins by knockout.

And that was his only victory since 2018.

I have no idea why he’s only chosen to fight once since 2018.

I think covid has something to do with that. I assume that he and his handlers believe he will be competitive against Ruiz. There may be also a sense of urgency because of Spong’s age. I don’t know his exact age, but I think he is in his late 30s.

His handlers know he is going to get sparked out inside 4 rounds. Just big enough money not to care.

Can you believe Spong was supposed to fight Usyk? This would have happened before Usyk vs. Joshua, assuming Usyk defeated Spong. Spong seemed to suggest that his drug test was tampered with because he tested positive for a banned substance, but that he is clean and never uses anything banned. He was found to have passed the drug test later and therefore proven to be clean, but by then, he lost the opportunity to fight Usyk. He then fought in MMA and lost, but his opponent had a good record. Now he is going to be active in boxing again.

Spong going from a bunch of pointlessly easy mismatches to a pointlessly hard mismatches. Still not a single fight that was worth having.

As far as a worthwhile fight, Spong should be fighting someone like David Allen, Rice, or Duhaupas.

If it's a warm-up bout before the real fight scheduled more or less soon, then it's OK, otherwise Ruiz is wasting his time.

Well, we can skip it. Boxing fans just won't give a damn about him, if he continues like that or stays without a real fight for long.

Yeah, I'll watch it full only if it'll be convincingly reported to be entertaining.

Classic Triller fight. Ruiz wins every minute. Spong has a nice left hook to look out for but that's about it.

Ruiz will be trained by Eddy Reynoso for this, According to the press release. Bu Triller don't know anything and could be guessing.
