This was fun to watch. Thanks for posting it.
Seems like anyone who who fought Shavers thought he hit the hardest.
Anyone who didn't fight Shavers but fought Foreman, thought Foreman was.
Anyone who didn't fight either but fought Lyle, thought Lyle was.

He fought a lot of names, Cleveland Williams, Ron Lyle, George Foreman, Joe Bugner, Earnie Shavers, Oscar Bonavena, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Gerrie Coetzee, John Tate....
Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
There are guys like that. Cookie Wallace comes to mind. Stamford Harris, Scrapiron Johnson. That would be a good thread.Controversial wrote: ↑13 Apr 2022, 17:15He fought a lot of names, Cleveland Williams, Ron Lyle, George Foreman, Joe Bugner, Earnie Shavers, Oscar Bonavena, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Gerrie Coetzee, John Tate....

Exactly right. I'd rather hear the folks who felt the power than a bunch of debaters who never have. Also hearing them made it all the more fun!Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑13 Apr 2022, 11:15 This was fun to watch. Thanks for posting it.![]()

Speaking of which, do you know the exact wording of the youtube thread, so I can find it on youtube? The reason I ask is I want to send it on to a couple peeps without exposing my secret 1244 identity?

Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
That was a very interesting video. George Foreman talking about his legs wobbling and not actually being hurt by Ron Lyle was fascinating analysis...
It reminded me of an old vid that I watched where one of Tyson's old opponents (I can't think of who just off the top of my head) spoke of Mike not actually being "a hurtful puncher"... Because of his fast hands, you didn't see the punch landing and when it did it just leave you feeling dizzy, faint and drained of energy...
It wasn't so much physical pain - more like the blow(s) take it outta you...

Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
I think a few of Tyson's opponents said other fighters hit harder than Mike with a single punch, it was more the combinations, speed and accuracy that made him more dangerous.Crease wrote: ↑14 Apr 2022, 10:22 That was a very interesting video. Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
Accuracy is a very apt point. Tyson knew where to aim his punches and was very accurate.Controversial wrote: ↑14 Apr 2022, 10:45I think a few of Tyson's opponents said other fighters hit harder than Mike with a single punch, it was more the combinations, speed and accuracy that made him more dangerous.Crease wrote: ↑14 Apr 2022, 10:22 That was a very interesting video. Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
Accuracy might be the most underrated part of boxing. We seldom talk about it. Being able to consistently land clean punches will take a guy far. Always thought that was one of the things that Joe Louis such a hard puncher and a great fighter.
Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
At the risk of repeating myself, fantastic video but do they mean Lyle third of all time? He was a very good puncher but 3rd is a bit high.
Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
OUT OF WHO THEY FOUGHT. Thats why i like this so much. You can't tell how hard a guy hits by seeing it. Found this so much more interesting than drab discussions by folks who never took a punch.
Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
THAT MAKES SENSE. Caldwell couldn't rate Joe Louis. The 1, 2, 3 stuck in my mind because the 1) Shavers and 2) Foreman are the GOAT punchers anyway IMO.

But did you fight both Shavers and Foreman? I only fought Shavers myself.

Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
Someone ought to write a book "Facing Earnie Shavers"
and interview everyone (that is still around)
and ask what it was like getting into the ring with him
all the way back to the amateurs (including his sparring partners and seconds)
before his punching power became "legendary"

Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
Henry Clark fought Sonny Liston, Earnie Shavers
and was a sparring partner to George Foreman (Rumble in the Jungle)
Henry Clark was the one who accidently hit Foreman with an elbow above the eye while protecting himself
causing a postponement of the fight.

Re: What HW hit you the hardest?
I think you can get an idea by seeing it. Obviously a punch can look better (or worse) depending on the chin of the opponent. Sometimes what looks like a big punch isn't because it didn't land as cleanly as you might think.
However, there are certainly times where you can tell a guy landed a big shot.
I do like the comments of guys saying who hit them the hardest. Assuming that the guy fought other big punchers, it is informative.
We do have to keep in mind that a guy could have fought a big puncher but never got hit on the button by that guy, so that guy doesn't get mentioned. And these are human beings who might not like another guy who indeed had a big punch.
