Q./Earnie Shavers amateur record/1967-1969

Post by Brutu »

His amateur record is listed as 20-6.
Anyone know whom and where he fought all 26 of his amateur fights?

This link only lists 12 of his amateur fights and is incomplete as far as where they occurred.

He lost to a friend of mine, Frank Steele. Steele if many remember couldn't get any financing to make it to the Olympic trials. Turned pro and couldn't get any fights. Was called to spare with George Foreman for the Ali fight. Embraced George by decking him one time too many and got fired. Ali hired Frank. Put Frank's eye out over there in Africa during an intense sparing session, ending Frank's career. But Ali did the right thing by him. Frank works with my nephew from time to time now.

Earnie Shavers fought at the National Golden Gloves in Salt Lake City in 1968.
defeating Don Foley and then losing to Frank Steele in the quarterfinals.

Anyone is interested,
I think there is a photograph of Earnie Shavers Boxing Lee Elder, who was about to go down from a punch.
that appears on page 60 of Volume 40 of the AMATEUR ATHLETE magazine (1969)
rare photo, so maybe someone can scan it here.
