Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
Hi, just wondering if someone with more knowledge on this could enlighten me. I'm looking to work out what the roles of the manager and promoter are to a fighter. Various Google sources tell me a manager finds opponents and acts an agent between the fighter and promoter, doing the negotiations. That's fine, I get that. Google also generally defines a promoter as the person who puts the events together, covers the budget and then negotiates to get fighters on the event. Again, that's fine.
Where I'm getting confused is with an example like Eddie Hearn and AJ. Eddie is, I believe, a promoter, albeit one that AJ has signed a contract with to feature on his events. However isn't it also the case that Eddie, Frank etc are also doing the matchmaking for their fighters too? Like after a fight when the interviewer turns to Eddie and asks 'Who's next for AJ?'.
So does the promoter actually do the matchmaking here, not the manager? Or is Eddie acting as both promoter and manager?
thanks in advance for any info.

Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
The likes of Eddie, FW, Big Mick, the Maloney of old are managers and promotors. Nevertheless they have fighters which they promote but don't manage.
If you manage you get 25% of the fighters purse, if you promote you get the cream of the promotion but you can also lose money too.

OP, you seem to have pretty much grasped it. Some promoters also act as managers which can lead to a conflict of interests at times but not always.
Top fighters like Tyson and AJ have names put to them by promoters (through their managers if they use them) they will then ask about money, dates, venues, etc... and make a decision based on those things and what they know about the opponent.

Pretty certain hasn’t and doesn’t manage fighters. Always found it strange but that someone’s allowed to do both given how big a conflict it is.Coco wrote: ↑25 Apr 2022, 11:43 The likes of Eddie, FW, Big Mick, the Maloney of old are managers and promotors. Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
I thought being both [to the same fighter] was illegal? Serious conflict of interest and obviously double bubble with fees
So don king used to do it abs then his son usually became their manager whilst he promoted. Win win for the kings. Not so much the fighter.

They all did it. Mickey Duff would manage, National Promotions would promote. He just happened to own them. Can't beat negotiating with yourself.

Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
It is illegal in the US under the Muhammed Ali act. It’s allowed in the U.K. but I’m not quite sure why given the potential conflicts. How can a manager negotiate the best promotional deal for a fighter when they’re also their current promoter?!
Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
Mickey was also the matchmaker as well half the timemickey1975 wrote: ↑25 Apr 2022, 13:09 They all did it. Mickey Duff would manage, National Promotions would promote. He just happened to own them. Can't beat negotiating with yourself.

I think it's more of a group effort, all be it a bit of a blurry one. The promoter has budgets for a card, negotiates purses within the budget. The promoter will negotiate a purse with the "A-side" boxers manager then calculate the funds available for an opponent. Then the matchmaker finds opponents within the budget to present to the boxers manager who has final say on who the guy fights.

There are ‘matchmakers’ as well, paid for by an event promoter to put fights together up and down the card. These are of course subject to approval by promoter and managers.

What’s Joshua?
He has AJBXNG which is his promotional company.. then he founded 258 as well which is a management company.
Don’t know if anyone is with both house ever.
Maybe Okolie.

I could be wrong but I think that whilst AJ owns the company it’s run by a guy called Freddie Cunningham. They seem to focus more on commercial opportunities and negotiating which promoter/TV network deals rather than being heavily into the boxing development of their boxers.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 12:23 What’s Joshua?

I don’t think AJ Boxing does much to be honest. May be on the poster on the shows so he can justify an extra part of the income streams.

When Okolie fights, does he have to pay AJ and Hearn? Or just AJ?maverick23 wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 12:54I could be wrong but I think that whilst AJ owns the company it’s run by a guy called Freddie Cunningham. Cus he’s only co-promoted by Hearn so he can appear on DAZN due to the exclusive tv deal.

Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
Unless Okolie fights on someone else’s show (perhaps due to Eddie losing another purse bid) then he doesn’t pay Matchroom. They pay him his purse.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 13:25When Okolie fights, does he have to pay AJ and Hearn? Out of that purse he’ll have to pay his manager a %.

So let’s say Oko’s last fight. What would he have paid. Matchroom paid his purse as the main promoter?
He paid a % to Matchroom and a % to 258?
Nothing to AJBXNG?

I don’t think AJBXING were involved as co-promoter for the fight. If they were then they would have taken some of the profit of the show.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 14:00So let’s say Oko’s last fight. Okolie doesn’t pay anything to Matchroom. They pay him a contracted purse that would have been negotiated between Matchroom, Okolie and 258.
Okolie would then pay a % of his purse to 258 and a % or agreed fee to his trainer.

Sorry for all the questions. I get a little confused when there’s multiple orgs involved and who gets what.

Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
Yeah - the promoters take the financial risk on the show. They get the show income from TV, tickets and advertising so if that doesn’t cover the cost of the purses/promotion/venue hire etc then they lose money.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 15:05So the only thing Matchroom would profit from having Okolie on their show is ticket sales Additional tv revenue?maverick23 wrote: ↑26 Apr 2022, 14:33I don’t think AJBXING were involved as co-promoter for the fight. Re: Nerd question: difference between a manager and promoter?
What they are and what they are supposed to do are two different things... start with .
A managers job is to get his fighter the easiest fights possible , for the most money possible and direct his carreer so it becomes a good one .
A promoters job is to put on the best fights possible for the punters , for has little money has possible so all concerned with backing the promotion make money .
But what you usually have is a conflict of interest ,, and parasites who want to rip the fighters off , and act like its about them
