Hitting arms

Post by handsofstone »

A lot of fighters use their arms to block and parry shots, protect the body etc, Canelo more than once has targeted the arms of fighters, done it against Callum and Bivol last night, clearly a ploy for the later rounds but does this make them scoring shots?

I wouldn't call 'em scoring shots, but they're not without their purpose either. Jack Johnson supposedly loved to target the shoulder of his opponents with his jab, and by the end of the fight they were barely able to lift their arm up due to that, so I'm sure it has it's usefulness.

No, it can't be counted, since arms are used for blocking. It's like a shield, which sometimes can be broken. Moreover, it's quite arguable tactics. It worked against Smith, but didn't work against Bivol at all. Bivol said, he had felt those shoulder punches, but he still had been able to use his left. I even remember a moment in this fight, when Canelo hit Bivol's left shoulder and received an answer right after that with a left hook. Hitting arms can be a waste of energy.

If one fighter is hitting arms and the other is doing nothing offensive would it be scored 10-9 to the arm hitter?

It will be a TKO win for the arm hitter because of the other guy not fighting back.

If a fighter is throwing shots where everyone is missing he’s doing more than the guy doing nothing so it’s 10-9 to them.

Yeah. He's "making the fight". To me that's worth something.

Now on the other hand, if the other guy is doing nothing, but making the guy who's throwing punches hit nothing but air, I'd say you can make a case for the guy showing excellent defense in a case like that, but you have to be making the guy miss clear.

For the most part if you're doing jack sh*t, you ain't gonna win the round.

Surely you can’t win a round unless you throw punches?

Willie Pep did it once. I would imagine it can only be done by making the guy miss by a mile with every shot. Which virtually never happens.

Only reason why you'd want to employ this strategy is in the hopes of draining the guy's energy so that you can attack him harder in the following rounds.

only way id award hitting arms is if clearly hurts the other guy or if the other guy is literally doing nothing

i think the pep thing is a myth btw

btw i hate the idea of actually giving a guy points for good defense, rather than just not scoring points for the missing fighter. a busy fighter who misses but in the process makes his opponent shell up is also protecting himself in a way, just as much as the guy not throwing, but for some reason a lot of ppl wont give that any of the credit a guy gets just for being slick.

I've never actually seen a guy get a round based on defense. Like they always used to say on HBO the 4 criteria. "Clean Punches, Effective Aggression, Ring Generalship and Defense" with a strong emphasis on Clean Effective Punching.

To be honest with you Ring Generalship doesn't even really mean anything, I guess that's supposed to be, if all else is even who's fighting their fight? Or whatever? That doesn't make a lot of tangible sense to me.

Who's getting the shots in. That's what matters.

ring generalship is just so vague , i pretty much never consider it when scoring. what the hell does it even mean, and how is it seperate from controlling the action via the other criteria?

someone here told me that a fighter was being the ring general because he was moving forward, yet when talking about the very next fight was saying the guy backpeddling was the ring general because he made the opponent come to him, even though opponent had been coming forward as soon as the bell landed. it's just always all over the place

I think Bivol demonstrated what ring generalmanship is all about ,, he controlled the pace , he controlled the distance , he used movement to great effect , moved in and out at the correct times ,,, he used body pressur to make Canelo throw and waste shots . , he moved backwards but always in a position to jab or counter , which made Canelo have to think extra hard what he was going to do and in a way that controlled Canelos aggresion , erfect fight , great ringmanship ,

Regards hitting the arms , Canelo does that he has confidence in his power , people shell up against Canelo he hurts the arms and tires them , plus hitting the arms does'nt take has much out of you has a complete miss , plus it looks good if the other guy is just shelling up ,, Unfortunatly for Canelo it did'nt work against the naturally bigger stronger guy , if anything it went against Canelo , the aggresive punching off the arms allowed Bivol to dictate where he was gonna position Canelo , he threw left hook counters after recieving an arm punch , moving in and out to control the distance ,, perfect ,,, don't think people are gonna give Bivol the credit he deserves for this fight it was a perfect boxing exhibition ,,, total control from who to go ,, except for rnd 9 he took off for some reason ..

Rematch Bivol stops him

Bivol had superb ring generalship. Fury has it as well. I suppose it means making the opponent fight your fight. Bivol was in control of the distance despite Canelo begging him to come in, which he did when he thought the time was right. Fury controlled Whyte in first gear and both of them had their opponents reduced to wild swings. Canelo missed huge hooks to the body by miles.

Correct Mickey , , his distancing had Canelo throwing from too far , his what i call body pressure had Canelo needing to either throw or run , alls the time Bivol controlling the distance , he virtually done a Canelo on Canelo because up till now Canelo has been an expert at controlling pace and positioning himself ,making his opponent throw what he knows he wil throw ... Boxing whilst going back was superb from Bivol even when he was going backwards (bivol ) Canelo knew he was (canelo )open for a counter , this made him think hesitate and be more vunerable than he usually is ,,

Fook better shut up i'm sounding like Ben Davidson ,,, but that was excatly the type of fight i like to watch

I remember a topic about hitting arms on Boxing Central, the forerunner to this forum. Marciano targetted LaStarza's arms in their second fight. More boxers should target the arms, if you give them two dead arms, how are they going to defend themselves? :maybe:
