Kell Brook Trainer: Kell Was Pricing Himself Out of Next Fight Intentionally

“That’s the kind of money Kell would want just to consider it (fighting again),” Ingle told Boxing King Media. “He was kind of pricing himself out of the job, really. ‘Well, so if you really want me to do it, give me that kind of money.’ I’m not particularly bothered. It’s kind of throwing out there just to put people off, well, that’s a ridiculous amount we’re not going to bother with that fight.

“I think that’s why Kell did it, really.”

“I think when he got back to normal life, looked at his kids, his family, his house, and everything and thought, ‘What do I need this for?’” Ingle said. “‘I enjoy myself now. [I’m] 36.’”

“We look back on that night with great fondness because it was a tremendous night,” Ingle said. “It was even a tremendous night for Khan really even though he got beat. He made plenty of money and got a good response and he played the part. He turned up. He gave the fight fans a fight that they wanted. It was not the right decision for him, but he still got credibility, I don’t care what people think. He had a great career himself.”

I’m going to miss Kell as a fighter.

I thought he was matched really well up to the Porter fight. A quick British title run (albeit in fights few people saw) followed by a big focus from Matchroom and headlining shows. The Matthew Hatton one was a standout.

He then suffered with bad luck (with the stabbing), poor mandatories (Bizier and Dan just to keep hold of the title) and inactivity so I can partly understand why they all rolled the dice with GGG. Was a life changing payday but it always makes it tough going up in weight and then coming back down - particularly for someone who didn’t always lead the life in between fights.

Without GGG he probably performs better against Spence (where he hardly disgraced himself) but it was really tough fight in his first fight back at welter. Perhaps he’d have been better off vacating and rebuilding. Who knows.

Really glad he ended his career the way he did but there will always be a thought about how good he could have been in those 3 years post Porter if things had gone differently.

I’ll miss ‘All of the lights’ as it was one of my favourite entrances. I’ve had a couple of nights out with Kell as randomly one of my mates is really close with him (weirdly he sorted the Crawford fight with Top Rank for him - I didn’t believe him when he said it but both Bob/Eddie confirmed it on IFL interviews). Always found Kell to be a really sound/nice bloke.

He had the potential fights with Diego Chavez which was cancelled and then the Jessie Vargas which Brexit messed up, which is then what fumed Brook even more then took on GGG..

Given how good Kell was I’m surprised he wasn’t pushed more, particularly in Sheffield. He clearly was of the same opinion as jumped ship as soon as he contract finished.

Definitely the right decision. Brook looked stellar against Khan, but we can't ignore how shot to bits Khan was. I think the performance flattered Brook and what he has left himself.

Yeh. A combination of both. We all know the Khan fight was the only one Brook would get outta bed for.

Warren wasn’t just doing big arena shows at the time. 2 of Brook’s British title fights were on smaller shows at York Hall (I think the Barrie Jones fight wasn’t even on Sky - pretty sure it was on Setanta) and as I said before one of his other British title fights wasn’t even shown on Sky because it was so far down the bill on a PPV undercard.

I was at the show where he fought Jennings. There was no real buzz for it in the arena and I don’t remember him having much of a support base there. I went with a group of guys from work who were barely even casual fans - none of them had seen/heard of Brook beforehand.

It’s rare to have fighters steamroller their domestic opposition like Kell did. The closest recent example I can think of is Ritson. When he was coming to the end of his British title run he was headlining at his local big arena. Kell could barely draw at his local leisure centre at the end of his run.

Super talent and well done to him. I hope he walks away and never fights again.

I know what people mean... Great fighter but he beat Porter and yet Porter went on to have the better career and make more money. That's a shame. There was a point when I'd have backed Brook against all the top welters including Thurman, Pac and Mayweather. He missed his chance. But he still achieved a hell of a lot.
