Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
As always my favorites are the ones that could really have happened.
10 rounds. Would be a very good matchup

Ken Norton UD somewhere around 6-4 7-3
Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Lyle all wrong for Kenny. See George foreman & Earnie Shavers.
Lyle in 7
Lyle in 7
Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Norton was a more advanced competitor with a tricky style barely to everyone. Yes, his chin was questionable, that's why Lyle would have a puncher's chance, but it would be an extremely hard target for Lyle. It's easier for me to see Norton outboxing Lyle and breaking him down.
Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Either Norton outhustle Lyle to take a decision or Lyle would wear him down with jabs and heavy punches before knocking Norton out in the late rounds.
Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
I'll say Lyle by something like 5-3-2 in a very good fight. Lyle lands enough big shots to keep Norton from outworking him.

I am sorry, but, Ken Norton's Achilles heel was the heavy punchers.
Ron Lyle by knockout.
Ron Lyle by knockout.

Norton's chin has long been one of boxing's great myths. He didn't have a great chin, but he could take a decent shot.
Norton never stopped by Ali.
Lyle got stopped by Ali.
Maybe Norton had at least as good of a chin as Lyle.

Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Misleading bullcrap. Lyle got technical stoppage against Ali. He was stopped because it was easier for Ali to outbox and batter him than Moo's stylistic nightmare Norton.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑05 May 2022, 10:51 Norton's chin has long been one of boxing's great myths. How many effort Foreman needed to KO Lyle and how many to destroy Norton?
What about Shavers?

Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
I was just pointing out that Norton had a decent chin and that Lyle could get hurt.
The first time that Ali opened up against Lyle, he hurt him and the fight was stopped.
Lyle got hurt several times against a rusty Foreman and was eventually stopped. Obviously he landed some big shots himself.
You certainly could argue that Norton was past it against Shavers.
Norton also easily beat Quarry and seemed able to take his shots. Lyle lost a lopsided decision against Quarry and was hurt by Quarry.

It looks like you haven't even watched Norton against Quarry, since in reality Norton clearly had problems in the 3rd, when he received a barrage of punches, got hurt and went defensive.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑06 May 2022, 15:42 I was just pointing out that Norton had a decent chin and that Lyle could get hurt.

No one (other than Alp) has ever mentioned a decent chin when speaking about Kenny Norton.DrDuke wrote: ↑06 May 2022, 16:48It looks like you haven't even watched Norton against Quarry, since in reality Norton clearly had problems in the 3rd, when he received a barrage of punches, got hurt and went defensive.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑06 May 2022, 15:42 I was just pointing out that Norton had a decent chin and that Lyle could get hurt.

Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Except for when he was actually fighting.
15 rounds in a brutal fight against a prime Larry Holmes. Never went down. 3 fights with Ali, never in serious trouble.
But hey, he got stopped by Shavers and Cooney when he was past his prime, he must not have a decent chin.

C'mon man, I watched him throughout his career AND he was and still is one of my all time favs. His not so decent chin cost him greatness.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑10 May 2022, 10:58 Except for when he was actually fighting.

Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
Not saying that he had a iron chin like Ali or even Holmes. However, he could take a decent shot.
It has always been a myth, which you did hear about when he was actually fighting. When I first starting following the sport, he was the #1 contender. (When there was only one champion.) Never heard anyone question his chin until long after he retired.
He got destroyed by Foreman. Foreman did that to almost everyone; including Frazier. Nobody ever says Frazier didn't have a decent chin.
The Holmes fight was a war. He gave Holmes all that could handle for 15 rounds and never went down. Holmes stopped 11 of his next 12 opponents. You have to have a decent chin to do that.
No way Ali wouldn't have stopped him if he didn't at least have a decent chin.
He was past it against Shavers who was probably the hardest hitting heavyweight ever. Was way, way past it against Cooney.

Norton was also beaten badly and stopped by Jose Luis Garcia of Venezuela in his 17th fight. NO ! he did not have a glass jaw, but he could be vulnerable against a big puncher and Lyle fits the bill. I did say though my prediction would be Lyle by close decision.

That is what we are basing this on? Nice that Seamus bailed you out. How did the rematch go?
Nobody cared about it in the 1970s, but we do now?
If Norton didn't have a decent chin, then did all those guys that Holmes stopped have glass jaws?

Norton obviously had a decent chin. I rate him as the 4th best heavy of the 70'sAmbling Alp II wrote: ↑12 May 2022, 10:48 That is what we are basing this on? Nice that Seamus bailed you out. How did the rematch go?

Behind Ali, Foreman, Frazier then Norton followed by Holmes who easily was the greater in an all time rating just did his best work in the early 80's
Norton beats Lyle by late ko
Re: Ken Norton vs Ron Lyle In 1975
LOL! No one bailed me out. No one cared about it because Norton was an unknown when he lost to Garcia. No one said Kenny had a glass chin, but come on Alpy, he crumbled vs big punchers.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑12 May 2022, 10:48 That is what we are basing this on? Nice that Seamus bailed you out. He crumbled against George Foreman. Did Frazier have a decent chin.
Past his best he got blown by Shavers, probably the hardest hitting heavyweight ever.
Those guys blew out guys with decent chins.
Again if he didn't have a decent chin, why couldn't Holmes stop him?

If we are talking late December of 1989 just 2 months shy of when Douglas out worked out boxed and kicked the crap out of Tyson. And Tim would come in the best shape of his life focused and in tip top shape he could pull the upset.
But odds are Tyson takes Tim out late
