Calzaghe on points.

Joe had incredible stamina and would throwing leather for 36 minutes.

I can see Canelo decking Calzaghe, but Joe would get up and start firing again.

Calzaghe would be just too busy for Canelo who seems to like walking people down and wearing them out with power shots, but those kind of tactics wouldn't work against a Calzaghe.

I feel that Canelo is a better all-round fighter than Joe Calzaghe.

And the Mexican is more accomplished and has faced much better opposition.

On purely a pound-for-pound basis, Canelo is a greater fighter than Calzaghe.

But the outcome of this fight could simply be determined by a case of “styles makes fights”, because Calzaghe was a mover that threw lightning-fast combinations (slaps) at a high-volume.

And I can’t help feeling that Canelo’s Achilles heel are tall rangy technical boxers that employ a lot of lateral movement whilst throwing lots of straight arm (one-two) combos, which is precisely how Calzaghe fights.

So I’d favour the bigger man, Joe Calzaghe, to score a close decision victory over Canelo.

I feel Joe would move and hit, outpointing Canelo much the same as Bivol did.
Joe had an answer to every opponent. Between him and sr, there was always a plan.

Calzaghe by hard fought decision... Bigger, very tough, very busy, great stamina, fast, great movement, and very adaptable. Canelo will certainly go down as a greater fighter with better achievements, but I see something similar to the Bivol fight with the naturally bigger guy being a bit too much.

I'm thinking the old saying "good big man beats good little man" applies here.
Plus the "styles make fights" thing favors Calzaghe.

Calzaghe would humiliate him. The only question worth asking here is whether it ends in TKO or scorecards.

Joe is unfairly tarnished with being a slapper, a fate suffered by some of the girls where I live.

An early version of Joe would have every chance of cleaning Canelo out, the later Joe would accept a hard fought points victory. The latter option would mean he run the gauntlet of judges cards, so by default probably a loss.

Calzaghe should win, but you never know with Canelo and his " judges " The stamina, size, movement, and defense hitting while being on offense would take Canelo out of his usual game and he gasses out too easily. I am near cetrain Calzaghe would clearly outland and out throw more punches in a fight that features no knockdown. Calzaghe via decision 8 rounds to four. 75% of the media would say Joe won.

Spot on.

Calzaghe was a good puncher at the start of his career, but endless hand injuries meant he had to modify his punching style to protect his brittle hands.

It might be his prime weight -- but I also think part of the reason he has looked so good at 168 is that there isn't a Calzaghe (or an Andre Ward, for that matter) at super middle these days to put him in his place a little bit.

Ray Leonard too, and no doubt many others. Wasn't there also a time when Wilder seems to be breaking his hand every other fight?

Anyway it's funny how fast the tide has turned against Canelo, just yesterday he was a superhero aiming to add the HW title to his long list of accomplishments.

All of a sudden Canelo's boxing skills are called into question as he's being seen as little more than a durable slugger looking to wear down his opposition and land the big one.

As was said earlier, styles make fights, and Joe Calzaghe would give Canelo a 12 round nightmare. Even Saunders was easily holding his own until he ducked into that uppercut.

Khan was outboxing Canelo too until disaster struck.

Bivol more than matched Canelo for defence and has now laid down the blueprint for future opponents - NSAC judges permitting of course.

Canelo would walk through Zaghe's slaps with no respect and hurt him.

Calzaghe is way too active
To beat calzaghe you need timed counters and to smother him. Andre ward beats him not canelo

calzaghe isnt just some stationary slapper though, and i dont know that he'd need to hurt son of bivol. he was very quick and moved well too, Canelo wouldnt just be able to walk him down easily. there would be a lot of swing and missing too. canelo needs to be set to punch. calzaghe also had a great engine and could fight 3 minutes per round x 12 rounds.......which canelo cant (see all the times he takes breaks on the ropes)

it would be a good competitive fight for sure, i think cal might have the style edge

I didn't look if it was already a topic but how do the boxing experts on here think canelo as of now would've hypothetically done against a prime not weight drained 'bronx bull" la Motta at 168.

they would be same size and height but completely different styles/punch output.

and let's leave the fvcking corrupt judges out of the discussion.

let's assume for once we got a ref and judges that actually do their job how they are supposed to.

Jake LaMotta would be significantly smaller than Canelo (in terms of build).

Back then, guys fought every month and weigh-in’s took place the same day as the fight.

This means that fighters from 70+ years ago didn’t have the opportunity to gain and lose a lot of weight between bouts, because they couldn’t afford to do so, due to competing so frequently.

And this is a huge problem, because in terms of physical stature, he would be competing against Canelo weighing around the same weight as Terence Crawford, when Bud was competing as a 140lb-er (rehydrated ring-weight). Alternatively, the 'Bronx Bull' would be shorter than fully-hydrated versions of welterweights like Victor Ortiz or Marcos Maidana.

This means the 'Bronx Bull' would have to overcome a man weighing at least 20lbs more than himself (assuming they fought at 168lbs).

Jake LaMotta also liked to block shots with his chin or nose, because he was defensively irresponsible. And his work-rate was quite poor (based on my perception of his bouts against Sugar Ray Robinson).

Canelo is also a counter-puncher that appears to be at his very best against front-foot "stalk-‘til-they-can't walk" style opposition. I guess James Kirkland is Canelo's only opponent I can recall within the last decade that had a remotely similar aggressive fighting style to the 'Bronx Bull'.

So I think Jake LaMotta gets busted up, worn down and then stopped by Canelo sometime around the 8th round.

I think the fight plays out in a similar manner to Canelo’s bout against James Kirkland, but it will take the Mexican longer to get to LaMotta, because Jake is very durable.

You could be right bc Zaghe fought some strong fighters like Kessler, Eubank Sr and Bika too.

Also hard to imagine that every measurable sport has progressed since 1950, but boxing hasn’t… we run faster over short and long distances, throw further, jump further, lift heavier weights (across all weight divisions) etc… etc…

Hard to make an argument that not only have boxers physically improved in line with measurable sportsmen, but also that over a 70 year period fighters and trainers have learnt nothing from those before them.
