Amir Khan has announced the end of his boxing career after defeat against Kell Brook

Amir Khan has announced the end of his boxing career following his defeat against Kell Brook.

Khan, who suffered a stoppage loss to Brook in February, has confirmed his retirement in a message on social media.

He said on Twitter: "It's time to hang up my gloves. I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years. I want to say a heartfelt thanks and to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me."

Khan unified world titles at super-lightweight and faced pound-for-pound stars Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Terence Crawford during a 40-fight career, featuring 34 wins and six defeats.

The Bolton fighter had launched his pro career in 2005 after winning an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games.

Khan became a world champion in July 2009, defeating Andriy Kotelnik on points to secure the WBA super-lightweight title, and he then stopped Zab Judah to add the IBF belt two years later.

A hotly disputed points loss to Lamont Peterson ended Khan's world title reign, and he was halted by Danny Garcia while attempting to win the WBC and WBA belts in his next fight.

Khan made an audacious move up to middleweight to challenge Canelo for the WBC belt, suffering a sixth-round knockout loss in May 2016 and was stopped by Crawford in the sixth round of their WBO title fight in April 2019.

He eventually shared the ring with Brook in February, embracing his rival in the ring after their feud was finally ended.

Here, DAZN looks back at the key highlights from Khan's memorable run in the ring.

2004 - Khan captures silver medal at Athens Olympics. His final loss to Mario Kindelan would be later avenged, but his second-place finish, at 17 years of age, made Khan an instant star.

2005 – Makes professional debut and wastes no time getting his paid career off to the perfect start when stopping David Bailey in the opening round.

2005 – Goes the distance for the first time when he’s unable to stop Baz Carey and has to settle for a deserved points win.

2007 – Incredible fight with Willie Limond sees Khan nearly suffer his maiden career defeat. Khan is heavily dropped in round six but recovers well to win two rounds later.

2008 – Suffers the first loss of his career when he’s blown away in one round by Breidis Prescott. The Columbian was something of an unknown fighter beforehand, but he arrived in style when dropping Khan twice and ending his unbeaten run.

2009 – Fight with Mexican great, Marco Antonio Barrera, is an ideal confidence builder for Khan as he defeats Barrera via technical decision after the legendary boxer suffers a cut.

2009 – Rolls the dice in first world title shot but is handsomely rewarded when schooling Andreas Kotelnik to become WBA champion at 140lbs.

2010 – Unbelievable encounter with Marcos Maidana sees Khan retain his title by the skin of his teeth. After a great start, Khan is rocked late in the fight and spends the championship rounds in survival mode before winning by narrow margins on the cards.

2011 – Unifies the light-welterweight division with dominant victory over Zab Judah to add the IBF strap to his growing list of honours.

2011 – Tough battle with Lamont Peterson sees Khan make a good start before Peterson takes over later in the fight. Two point deductions are costly for Khan as he loses his titles on points.

2012 – Reinstated as WBA world champion following a failed drugs test from Peterson, Khan loses his crown immediately as he’s emphatically blown away in four rounds by Danny Garcia.

2014 – Move to welterweight sees Khan enjoy excellent wins over Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander. His pursuit of a fight with Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao is unsuccessful though.

2016 – After failing to secure a dream fight at 147lbs, Khan moves to middleweight to face Canelo Alvarez. The gamble doesn’t pay off as Khan suffers horrible knockout to the heavy-handed Mexican.

2018 – Ends two years of inactivity by returning to Britain to defeat Phil Lo Greco and Samuel Vargas.

2019 – Returns to the highest level to take on Terence Crawford in New York City. Khan is second best throughout but after suffering a low blow in round six, Khan can’t continue. Crawford is handed the victory via TKO.

2022 – Long-time rivalry between Khan and Kell Brook is finally settled, and it’s the man from Sheffield who emerges victorious with a stoppage in round six.

2022 – Khan announces his retirement from boxing following a superb 17-year career.

It was a couple of weeks ago [when I made my mind up]. Even before the last fight against Kell, my family were saying I should call it a day, and that I'd done everything I wanted to," Khan told Sky Sports.

"I'd fought all around the world, against the biggest names in boxing, achieved many world titles. And it was in the back of my mind even before taking the last fight. But after it, I could feel that my love for the sport just wasn't there anymore, and I decided I was going to call it a day but didn't know when to announce it. That was a part of me that still wanted to do boxing and be part of it, but I just had to announce it.

"It feels quite funny really because boxing is something I've done all my life, and I'm so attached to it that I am going to miss it. I've had a brilliant career. My family told me a long time ago to retire, but I said: 'No, I want to do a bit more'. it's just hard to walk away from the sport. But I think it's the right time to walk away now. Boxing has been brilliant for me. I thank all the fans, my trainers and coaches, my boxing family. It's all I've known and it's been wonderful. Since coming out of the Olympic Games at the age of 17, boxing changed my life and gave me a great platform."

Definitely be missed in boxing, was in some great fights and nearly always entertaining. Also have to respect how he went over to the US relatively early in his career to face the top guys, rather than staying in Britain feasting on comfortable defences
