Gilberto Ramirez-Dominic Boesel Light Heavyweight Bout Headlines May 14 DAZN Show

Another show has found its way to the already crowded Southern California boxing field on May 14.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez will headline a DAZN show on the date, facing Germany’s Dominic Boesel in a light heavyweight bout to air from the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. The matchup was revealed during the two most recent DAZN shows, marking Ramirez’s third main event on the sports streaming service.

The winner of the scheduled 12-round fight will become the mandatory challenger for the WBA light heavyweight title at stake in Dmitry Bivol’s title defense versus Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Boesel and Ramirez are the two highest ranked contenders in the most recent set of the WBA light heavyweight rankings.

Ramirez (43-0, 29KOs) enjoys his third fight in just more than ten months since joining the Golden Boy Promotions stable last spring. The former WBO super middleweight titlist is 4-0 (4KOs) since moving up to light heavyweight in 2019, with the last two fights taking place as a Golden Boy fighter.

In his most recent start, Ramirez stopped former title challenger Yunieski Gonzalez in the tenth round last December 18 in San Antonio. The win came five months after his prior appearance in the SoCal region, scoring a fourth-round knockout of veteran contender Sullivan Barrera last July 9 at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

Boesel (32-2, 12KOs) will make his U.S. debut in what also marks a step up in class. The 32-year-old former interim titlist has fought exclusively in Europe and mostly in his home country of Germany, including a twelve-round, split decision win over Robin Krasniqi in their rematch last October 9 in Magdeburg. The disputed victory saw Boesel avenge a third-round knockout at the hands of Krasniqi just two fights prior.

Already scheduled for that evening are two other shows in the region. Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano meet in an undisputed junior middleweight championship rematch atop a Showtime card from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Also that evening, former light heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev will face Tervel Pulev in a cruiserweight fight headlining a Triller Pay-Per-View event from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The guy is following the same trajectory as Aduckis Chickenson, but now after moving up-without the belt!
What are they afraid of with him?
He was a title holder when he moved up = #1 contender or there abouts.

Almost more shocked that Boesel’s handlers are letting him fight somebody with a pulse. He was WBO #1 ranked for a while after beating a string of cupcakes. His team must figure he’s damaged goods after losing to a Euro club fighter like Krasniqi. Step back fight for Ramirez

Press Release

The DAZN live stream of Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramírez vs. Dominic Boesel on Saturday, May 14 will feature lightweight sensation William “El Camaron” Zepeda (25-0, 23 KOs) defending his WBA Continental Americas Lightweight Title against the resilient, former world champion, Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado (32-11, 21 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua in a 10-round lightweight co-main event.

Diego De La Hoya (22-1, 10 KOs) of Mexicali, MX will also make his grand return to the ring in a 10-round featherweight fight against Jose Gonzalez (23-9-1, 13 KOs) of Guadalajara, MX. Also, part of the live stream, John “Scrappy” Ramirez (9-0, 7 KOs) of Los Angeles, CA, will fight for a regional title for the first time in his career. Ramirez will take on Carlos Sardinez (16-5, 2 KOs) of San Juan, ARG, in an 8-round fight for the vacant NABA Super Flyweight title.

The event will take place at Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA, and will stream live exclusively on DAZN starting at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET.

“Zepeda vs. Alvarado will be the fight of the night,” said William Zepeda. “We both have come-forward styles that the fans will enjoy. There will be non-stop action and I can’t wait to show the fans a great night of boxing.”

“I want to thank Golden Boy for this opportunity,” said Rene Alvarado. “Zepeda is a strong fighter. A victory over him will invigorate my career. Those that know me and know my style, know that I am the type of fighter that brings it, and May 14 will not be the exception. I guarantee all the boxing fans that this will be the best fight of the night.”

“I am anxious and excited to get back in the ring and I look forward to bigger and better opportunities after this fight,” said Diego De La Hoya. “It’s been a while since my last fight, but you’ll see a motivated and determined DDLH come May 14.”

“From the first day I walked into Wildcard Boing Club, I envisioned this moment” said John Ramirez. “I want to thank Golden Boy, Zurdo Promotions, and the 3 Point Management for the opportunity to fight on this card, especially for the opportunity to fight for a regional title. On May 14th the ‘Inner City Legend’ will take over the super flyweight division.”

Gilberto Ramirez On Boesel Fight: I'm Looking For An Early Knockout And Believe I Will Do It

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez remains driven to become undisputed light heavyweight champion.

The unbeaten former WBO super middleweight titlist is prepared to flatten everyone in his path. The first on that list is Germany’s Dominic Boesel (32-2, 12KOs), the next opponent for Ramirez and with whom he has no desire to share the ring for very long.

“I’m looking for a knockout,” Ramirez confessed to reporters during a Zoom media conference call to discuss the May 14 DAZN main event. “I’m looking for an early knockout and believe I will do it. I’ve put in a lot of work in this training camp. I’ve been working more than other training camps.

“I put in a lot of hard work and into these hands. I’m looking forward to May 14 and this fight.”

The bout—which takes place at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California—serves as a final eliminator for the WBA light heavyweight title. The belt is stake this weekend as defending titlist Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11KOs) faces undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs), who moves up in weight for their DAZN Pay-Per-View main event this Saturday from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A win by Alvarez will functionally leave the belt in limbo, as he plans to next face IBF/WBA middleweight titlist Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 37KOs) who will move up in weight for their targeted September 17 trilogy bout. A win by Bivol could be of benefit to the Ramirez-Boesel winner, who will be the mandatory challenger.

Also ahead is the yet-to-be-announced June 18 championship clash between lineal/WBC/IBF champ Artur Beterbiev (17-0, 17KOs) and WBO titlist Joe Smith Jr. (28-3, 22KOs).

Ramirez (43-0, 29KOs) is currently ranked in the top four by the WBA (#2), IBF (#4) and WBO (#2). A shot at a second divisional title is bound to come for the 30-year-old southpaw from Mazatlan, Mexico, who plans to keep building intrigue for such a moment.

“It’s important to keep knocking these guys out and putting on a show for the fans,” insisted Ramirez, who has stopped all four opponents at light heavyweight since moving up in 2019. “I want to make it exciting while I wait for my title fight. That’s what I want, to knock out all these guys.

"Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez remains driven to become undisputed light heavyweight champion."
He remains driven to avoid any high risk opponents, just like he did when he hoarded his SMW belt.
What a waste of time that guy is.
He moved up as a residing undefeated champion at SMW, and still hasn't had a title shot in how many years?
What are they waiting for - someone to die?

I honestly don't know anything about Dominic Boesel, but he appears to European calibre fighter.

Since the start of 2018, he’s competed in seven bouts against opponents (at the time of those contests) that had failed to win a combined total of 51 of their fights.

Coincidentally, Gilberto Ramirez has also engaged in seven bouts since the start of 2018, against the following opponents:

• Yunieski Gonzalez
• Sullivan Barrera
• Alfonso Lopez
• Tommy Karpency
• Jesse Hart
• Roamer Alexis Angulo
• Habib Ahmed

Those fighters (at the time of their bouts) had failed to win a combined total of 18 of their contests.

I don’t really know what to say about Zurdo that hasn’t already been said.

I think he’s an inactive fighter that has received many big opportunities, but has repeatedly rejected them.

He initially became a top-ten world-rated fighter in 2014 and during 2017 he was rated as the very best 168lb-er on the planet, but he hasn’t really done anything particularly impressive, other than to beat an aging version of Arthur Abraham (who was previously fortunate to avoid defeat against Paul Smith and Martin Murray).

It’s hard to gauge whether Gilberto Ramirez is a decent fighter or not, because of his weak Demetrius Andrade-esque style resume.

Gilberto Ramirez was classed amongst the top-ten world-rated 168lb-ers from 2014 until the end of 2019 and he never attempted to face any of the following fighters:

• Andre Ward
• Carl Froch
• George Groves
• James DeGale
• Robert Stieglitz
• Anthony Dirrell
• Andre Dirrell
• Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
• Felix Sturm
• Badou Jack
• Fedor Chudinov
• Callum Smith
• Tyron Zeuge
• Chris Eubank Jr
• Caleb Truax
• David Benavidez
• Juergen Braehmer
• Jose Uzcategui
• Canelo
• Caleb Plant
• Billy Joe Saunders
• John Ryder
• Avni Yildirim

How the hell was he allowed to avoid facing any of those guys during his time competing at 168lbs?

For sure, there might be a legitimate reason for one or two of them, but to have not faced any of these guys at all really is terrible!

Have I missed anyone notable from 2014 until 2019?

96 - 94 Zepeda due to a more compact last round. That was a good brawl.
