Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
By 1984-85, World Welterweight Champion, Donald Curry of Dallas-Forth Worth, TX was the world's #1 ranked fighter when he quickly dispatched the great Tommy Hearns' Kronk Boxing Team stablemate Milton McCrory in only 3 rounds.
What if Curry decided to relinquish his world title and challenge The Hitman? Will Tommy suffer the same fate as McCrory? Or would the Hitman avenges the loss of his stablemate?
Remember, Hearns didn't had a fight the whole year after the big fight with Marvelous. Does inactivity a factor in this fight?
It seemed like the year 1985 wasn't a good year for Emmanuel Steward's Kronk pupils.

At 154 Hearns would knock him out in 4-6 rounds.
At 147 it would be a great fight.
At 147 it would be a great fight.

In my view, at 154lbs is all Thomas Hearns in the "Battle of the Cobras".
At 147lbs, is a toss up for me.

Toss up at welterweight going for SD HEARNS
Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
Curry was no Leonard .Hearns by decision.
Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
Curry would be giving Hearns fits until Tommy hits Donald with that right cross in the 5th round. Hearne by 5th round knockout.

Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
The more I think about it, I think that Donald Curry has a great chance at 147lbs (Welterweight) against the great Thomas Hearns. Curry had a precious and wicked left hook that could catch Hearns. And Curry was the better inside fighter.
Hearns legs were not strong nor sturdy enough to go 15 hard fought rounds. If Curry pass the 5th round against Hearns, Hearns would be in lots of trouble.
But, at 154lbs (Jr. Middleweight), it would be a different story. Hearns at that weight was stronger and better. He had stronger and sturdier legs, and looked like a light-heavyweight in that weight class.
Hearns by knockout at 154lbs
Curry by knockout at 147lbs

Curry did have a bit of a suspect chin though.elmersalsa wrote: ↑05 May 2022, 21:54 The more I think about it, I think that Donald Curry has a great chance at 147lbs (Welterweight) against the great Thomas Hearns. The Lone Star could block the shots very well. Especially, at 147lbs. And he was a way better inside fighter than the Hitman.Nile4000 wrote: ↑10 May 2022, 20:24Curry did have a bit of a suspect chin though.elmersalsa wrote: ↑05 May 2022, 21:54 The more I think about it, I think that Donald Curry has a great chance at 147lbs (Welterweight) against the great Thomas Hearns. If Randy Shields lasted 11 with The Hitman, then I could see Donald Curry doing much better than Shields.

Possibly, but tbh, Tommy would have had him out of there by the 2nd. Especially in Detroit.
Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
Have to change my mind- Hearns stops Curry, mid rounds at 154.

Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
At 154lbs, it is very hard to beat that great Thomas Hearns that destroyed the great Manos de Piedra (albeit, past his prime) and Len Hutchins. Still, a win by KO against a over the hill but still dangerous opponent like Roberto Duran is a great win. Nobody has ever knocked Duran out like that.
At 154lbs, maybe the great Mike McCallum or Sugar Ray Robinson beats The Hitman. After those two, nobody else.
But, at 147lbs, I can see plenty of fighters beating Hearns. And I think that Donald Curry was capable. He was stronger than Hearns at 147lbs. You pass the 5th round against him and apply pressure and you got him. Just like the great Sugar Ray Leonard did. And Curry was a fantastic boxer and a better inside fighter than Hearns and Leonard.
Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
Hearns' long quick jabs and right hands would be too much for Curry to handle at super welterweight and "The Hitman" would knock "The Cobra" out either in the middle or late rounds.
Re: Super Welterweights: Donald Curry vs Thomas Hearns
I'd take Griffith, Luis Rodriguez and Gavilan-hands down- against Hearns at 154. I also suspect that Burley and Holman Williams were as great as their reputations and they would beat Hearns at any weight.
