Question about venue/arena lighting from the 1920's...

Post by 952023 »

I'm writing a novel based on my grandfather, Al Tiernan, a pro boxer from the early 1920's. Anyone know what type of lights used at boxing venues during 1922? What were they made of, were they sodium lights or something different? One bout in the book will take place at the Palace of Joy in Coney Island. Not sure where other will take place, possibly Ridgewood or Freeport Auditorium. Thanks in advance. Gregg

My guess is that they were still using Thomas Edison's incandesent lamps
during the 1920's to light up the inside of a boxing arena at Coney Island (Brooklyn New York City).
I have seen photographs of some boxing arenas around that time.
the bulbs are as big as a 5 gallon bucket about 2 feet apart in a line of about 7.
and suspended from the ceiling
about 12 feet up over the ring.

for filming purposes during the 1910's
The Cooper-Hewitt Lighting system was used to illuminate the ring for the cameras.
(which I think were fluoresent lights and gave off an eerie Green tint over the inside of the arenas.
