Jean Pascal vs. Meng Fanlong - May 20, 2022

Press Release

On May 20, IBF No. 1 Contender Meng Fanlong (17-0, 10 KOs) and former two-time world champion Jean Pascal (35-6-1, 20 KOs) meet in a 12-round clash for a top spot in the 175-pound division.

In the co-feature, former champion Xu Can (18-3, 3 KOs) makes his return against rugged Mexican warrior Brandon Benitez (18-2, 7 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

The entire event will be streamed live on ProBox TV from the Company’s Events Center in Plant City, Florida.

Meng is a 34-year-old southpaw who has been craving for a meaningful challenge. He made his professional debut in 2015 following a decorated amateur career where he represented China in the 2012 Olympic Games. Since then, he has captured two regional titles, the WBO Oriental and the IBF Intercontinental Light Heavyweight Titles. The native of Chifeng City, China is eager to step up in opposition in order to put himself in line for a world title.

“I’m so excited to get back in the ring and face former world champion Jean Pascal on May 20,” said Meng. “This fight is so unique for a lot of different reasons. It's my first time as the main event fighter. It’s the first time I face a former world champion, and it’s the first time we will live stream in China so that 1.5 billion people can support. It’s also my first time fighting on ProBox, my home turf. I’ve been training very hard here in Florida. Camp has been great. I can’t wait to put on a good show.”

Pascal is generally considered to be one of the top light heavyweights of the past 15 years. In 2009, he defeated Adrian Diaconu to capture the WBC Light Heavyweight World Title. He defended it twice before capturing the IBO Light Heavyweight World Championship in a unification fight with Chad Dawson.

Pascal eventually lost the belts in a 2011 rematch to Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins, but had world title opportunities during the next few years against the likes of Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol. He will need to defeat Meng if he wants to remain a player in the division, and if age is a significant factor, then that means he’ll need to resort to using power and strength to stop the younger man early.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Pascal. “I’m back with a lot to prove and a fire under my ass. This fight with Meng is a great opportunity for me to get right back where I belong, the top of the division. He’s a good fighter. He’s undefeated for a reason, but he’s never been in with anybody like me. After this fight, he and Ahmed Elbiali will have something in common, losses to me in Florida in fights his people should have never made.”

Can is a former world champion who is known for his volume punching and relentless action. The native of Fuzhou, China captured the WBA Featherweight World Title with a unanimous decision victory over Jesus Rojas in January 2019. He made defenses against Shun Kubo and Manny Robles III before losing the belt against Leigh Wood in July 2021.

Can will look to bounce back against a tough challenge in Benitez, a 24-year-old native of Queretaro, Mexico whose only losses have come against undefeated boxers. Benitez will enter this fight coming off a four-fight win streak.

“I’m excited to return to the ring in this tough fight against Brandon Benitez,” said Can. “Fans know my style. They know that I like to throw lots of punches. So when it’s a fight between me and a Mexican warrior like Benitez, you know it will be a war.”

“I am ready and excited for this opportunity to face a former world champion,” said Benitez. "This is the opportunity I've been fighting for all my life. I know it will be a difficult fight where there’ll be a lot of punches thrown, but I will be in great shape to not only throw more than my opponent, but also to win convincingly.”

Press Release | Jean Pascal Training With Orlando Cuellar For Meng Fanlong Clash

Veteran boxing trainer Orlando Cuellar has been selected by two-time world champion Jean Pascal (35-6-1, 20 KOs) as his new chief second for his upcoming return on May 20th, which is going to be a twelve round main event against undefeated Chinese light heavyweight Meng Fanlong (17-0, 10 KOs), the International Boxing Federation’s No. 1 contender.

The event will be streamed live on ProBox TV from the company’s events center in Plant City, Florida.

The Miami-based Cuellar is best known for guiding the career of two-time world light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson. Other world-class fighters he has trained include Antonio Tarver, Juan Carlos Gomez, Odlanier Solis, Eromosele Albert, and Yunieski Gonzalez.

Last year, Cuellar was inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame.

“Although we have not been training for long,” Cuellar commented, “Pascal and I both have a winning record and together we have chemistry, knowledge, and the experience necessary to know the hard work needed to get back on the mountain top. I have no doubt that we can not only get to the top of the mountain, but we can also take over the mountain top. Together we can do magic!”

Pascal and Cuellar are at training camp in Miami preparing for Fanlong. The bout will be the first for Pascal since December of 2019. A rematch was scheduled to take place last year, but it was called off when Pascal tested positive for several banned substances.

Pascal-Fanlong: Eight-Man Last Chance Tournament Added To Show In Florida

A card headlined by the return of former light heavyweight champ Jean Pascal will feature an eight-man tournament where all participants face a must-win situation.

ProBox TV unveiled its ‘Last Chance Tournament’ as part of the May 20 show topped by a light heavyweight bout between Pascal and unbeaten contender Meng Fanlong (17-0, 10 KOs) at ProBox Event Center in Plant City, Florida. The four quarterfinal bouts are all scheduled for eight rounds and at junior welterweight, featuring fighters who are at a make-or-break point in their respective careers.

One side of the bracket pits China’s Zhiming Wang (11-3, 3 KOs) versus Mexico’s Francisco Armenta (12-1, 4 KOs), with the winner to face whomever prevails between San Antonio’s Kendo Castaneda (17-5, 8 KOs) and Toledo native Sonny Fredrickson (21-5, 14 KOs).

The winner of that series will await the last man standing in similarly matched bouts on the other side of the bracket featuring once-noted prospects and former title challengers. Michael Dutchover (15-2, 10 KOs) of Midland, Texas collides with locally-based St. Petersburg native Clarence Booth (21-4, 13 KOs), while Mexico City-bred fringe lightweight contender Antonio “Toño” Moran (26-5-1, 19 KOs) faces Philadelphia’s Jeffery Torres (10-1, 6 KOs).

“This tournament highlights our commitment to reinvigorate non-championship fights for the real boxing fights who wants to see real action,” Garry Jonas, ProBox TV founder and CEO said of the junior welterweight bouts. “I think fans will really enjoy this tournament as it exemplifies the adage by which we plan to change the sport: ‘Good Fighters in Great Fights.’

“I am very confident that real boxing fans who crave evenly matched fights will enjoy seeing how this tournament plays out.”

The tournament is accompanied by news of former secondary WBA featherweight titlist Xu Can (18-3, 3 KOs) suffering an injury in having to withdraw from a planned featherweight clash with Queretaro, Mexico’s Brandon Benitez (18-2, 7 KOs).

Fanlong remains hopeful of a long overdue shot at the light heavyweight title. The 2008 Olympian for China was the mandatory challenger for the IBF title currently held by lineal/WBC/IBF champ Artur Beterbiev (17-0, 17 KOs), though their ordered title fight suffered several postponements and an outright cancellation due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.

The 34-year-old southpaw has fought just once since then, a ten-round decision of Israel Duffus last October.

Pascal enters on the heels of a low point in his otherwise storied career, having tested positive for multiple banned substances ahead of his canceled rematch with Badou Jack last June. Pascal previously outpointed Jack via split decision in their December 2019 clash in Atlanta, defending a secondary version of the WBA light heavyweight title he claimed in a technical decision win over then-unbeaten Marcus Browne earlier in the year.

The wins resurrected the career of Pascal (35-6-1, 20 KOs), a former lineal/WBC light heavyweight champion who lost his crown to Bernard Hopkins in their May 2011 rematch after fighting to a draw five months prior. Pascal remained an integral part of the light heavyweight division, boasting among the strongest resume of his generation, though also failing on three separate occasions to reclaim a piece of the light heavyweight throne.

Pascal-Fanlong and the Last Chance Tournament will air live on the ProBox TV app, which comes with a $1.99 monthly subscription price.

another back and forth round. pascal scores with looping pot shots. meng with tighter straight stuff. pascal actually prob landed enough to take that round, though he still looks a lot more tired than meng.

meng was just too easy to hit. pascal was landing those looping pot shots all the time, even when they were telegraphed. meng also never really committed to his shots despite scoring decently with the straight left when he did

I scored it 114-113 Pascal. 116-111 is too wide, as this was a very close fight, where basically the knockdown was the difference.
Meng got out to a great start, momentarily stunning Pascal early. But the 2nd half of the fight, Pascal took over, and Meng didn't seem to know how to react to the wild swinging Pascal.

Pascal would be a good next fight for Ramierz. I dont think thats too much to ask from a 30 year old thats 44-0.

Wouldent be suprised if Callum smith throws him an offer for a fight too.
