Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Rolando Romero is rated #20 by BoxRec, I think that's about right.
With so many talented boxers at 135 and 140, why did they choose the #20 rated boxer at 135 for Davis?
Ryan Garcia
Vasyl Lomachenko
Devin Haney
Teofimo Lopez
George Kambosos
Jose Carlos Ramirez
Regis Prograis
Haney is younger than Davis, yet he's stepping up and fighting Kambosos.

His last fight should tell you why.
Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Because the chances are very, very high all of the top guys beat him.
He'd beat Ryan Garcia I figure. I don't see him beating Loma, Kambosos, Teofimo, Josh Taylor or even Shakur Stevenson.

I wouldn’t really pay too much attention to the BoxRec ratings..
But it does give you an indication.

But he might stay with PBC? He’s already established GTD Promotions..
But then again just like Haney and Canelo, he can play the field. Appear wherever he likes.

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Imagine how protected he would be with Golenboy? He moved up in weight in his last fight, and KOd the guy that just fought Thurman. He's at the right pace for his age and experience.
I will be disappointed, however, if he doesn't fight one of the other champs next.

28 years old (not 22 or 23) this year, no need to baby him. dudes his size are usually in their prime already. he should be fighting his biggest fights soon.
Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Because of the man in charge of his career up until this point.
Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Hopefully he will. He's at prime age now, and needs the biggest and best fights. With the pace they fight these days, it will take years to fight the top guys. Fans lose, while the divas make $ and sit. Makes me appreciate older boxers that fought 8-10 times a year. Money has ruined the sport.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑23 May 2022, 17:4428 years old (not 22 or 23) this year, no need to baby him. dudes his size are usually in their prime already. he should be fighting his biggest fights soon.

A lot of top fighters keep facing the lesser opposition, it's a shame.

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
Gervonta Davis claims his next fight against Rolly Romero is apparently his final bout with Mayweather Promotions, with Floyd himself seemingly confirming this to be the case when he admitted that “nothing lasts forever” and that Tank “has to do what’s best for him.”
We also need to remember the rather simple fact that Tank's big-name rivals are aligned with rival promoters and networks (i.e. the old PBC versus Top Rank/ESPN conundrum that affects all Al Haymon fighters).
For instance: it’s exceptionally rare for PBC fighters to face guys from Top Rank, which means it’s unrealistic to expect Gervonta Davis to be facing the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko or Teofimo Lopez.
And Top Rank also promoted George Kambosos Jr’s most recent outing against Vasyl Lomachenko and will be promoting his next bout against fellow Bob Arum stablemate Devin Haney.
In terms of Mayweather Promotions’ handling of Tank’s career, we need to remind ourselves that Gervonta Davis captured his first world title when he was only 22 years of age.
He’s now a three-weight world champion that’s already engaged in ten world title bouts, with four of his opponents in those fights undefeated prior to their contest.
Here’s a list of his opponents in those contests:
• Leo Santa Cruz
• Isaac Cruz
• Jose Pedraza
• Liam Walsh
• Mario Barrios
• Ricardo Nunez
• Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar
• Hugo Ruiz
• Yuriorkis Gamboa
• Francisco Fonseca
Davis has also beaten six current/former world champions.
ESPN rate Gervonta Davis in 12th place in their pound-for-pound ratings, with the Romero bout being the fourth PPV event he’s headlined.
Gervonta Davis is also rated 3rd by ESPN, 4th by TBRB and 4th by The RING at 135lbs. TBRB also rates him 7th at 140lbs.
In terms of Tank's bout against Rolly Romero, the WBA ordered their regular champion at 135lbs to face their interim titleholder. Gervonta is obliged to do this or vacate. The WBA's super champion at 135lbs is George Kambosos Jr.
Whilst I appreciate the fact that most of you guys detest Floyd Mayweather Jr, you can’t seriously claim his promotional company has done a terrible job with Gervonta Davis?
Tank has achieved an incredible amount, especially when you consider the fact he’s only 27 years of age. And he’ll be a free-agent soon, meaning he’ll have the freedom to fight anyone he damn well wants (assuming he does in fact leave Mayweather Promotions).

I don’t see Davis being protected, and I really don’t think he needs to be protected this guy, are you crazy ?he looks an absolute superstar, can anyone see any weaknesses?
It’s just the usual boxing politics, nervous promoters and their egos etc.

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
I hate to see a boxer put any thought or efforts into calling out another boxer less than a week before his next tilt. But I did love to see Tank calling out Haney yesterday. It shows that his training wheels are finally off and he plans to begin making those huge fights that will generate the most excitement and generate the most revenue for his post career.
It appears that Floyd’s not such a businessman after all. As frustrating as it was to see how Floyd protected him, Tank has made nice money for such a light resume. But a good businessman extracts as much money as they can with an investment versus losing it when it’s value and future returns are THIS promising. Tank could make as much money or much more in his next few fights than he has in his career if things go as well as most think it will. Tanks a big star and rising.

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
As alluded to, boxing (promotional) politics hamper us fans getting the biggest and best fights.
Davis has gone about things reasonably well I think so far. Got some good wins and come up through weight divisions and there's plenty of talent for even bigger bouts in future.
People like to claim Tank is protected but why do the other guys not get the same stick?
Of the crop of top talent lightweights I think only Loma can really get credit.
He took the risk with Teo and ultimately paid the price.
Teo would have (and many observers) expected to steam roller Kambosos, but that didn't quite work out. It wasn't supposed to be a risky fight.
Haney is now taking his chance to claim that belt and you have to give credit to Kambosos taking that fight. It is a huge risk!
Ryan Garcia is making waves, Haney will likey win.....Teo needs to bounce back, Loma is a legend....Tank leathers Rolly this weekend and we see what they all do from there.
For what it's worth I think Davis could be the best of the lot of them if they all face off over the next 2-4 years!

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
loma fought teo (and plenty others........in his 3rd fight, at 26, he beat russell)
teo fought loma (at 23)
kambosis fought teo
haney fighting kambosis (at 24)
at 130 shak fought valdez (at 24)
at 140 everyone fighting everyone pretty much
all better than anything tank's done i'd say. and tank/his fans have played the 'he's so young' card for years, but he's in his late 20 now and dudes younger than him are challenging themselves vs elite guys
tank hasnt fought crap, he's not feasting on total c listers repeatedly like david benavidez. but for a guy as talented as him it's been pretty ho hum. as said, his best win was 5 years ago. he's been bouncing around too much in cherrypicked fights.

^this^
He is promoted using the Floyd Wifebeater Jr model, but without the skills of Floyd.
So preserve the "0" at all costs, put every fight on PPV, call everyone out on social media, and fight Rolly

tank deserves some props tbh, because he openly admitted he hasnt been fighting top opposition and that he wants better. the fallout with floyd i think is in part because he wants to challenge himself more

Davis is the most protected fighter in the sport of Boxing. How good he actually is we won't know for a while, but I get the feeling he's been protected the way he has for a reason. He gets fat in between fights. He does hood rat sh*t like beat up his girlfriend in between fights. He's Broner all over again. He's just been so coddled people haven't noticed yet.
Name me any division he's been in where he fought the Top guy. Hell name me any division he fought in where he fought the 4th best guy.
Now you do make one fair point. You can't say they've done a bad job promoting him because he is actually one of the bigger stars in Boxing at the moment. It just goes to show that you can sell the casuals anything. Give 'em a guy that knocks out people, and they won't even notice that he never fights anybody with a pulse.

Is it fair to say that Top Rank is/has been promoting most of those fights, with Tank being a PBC fighter, whereby it’s rare for guys aligned with Al Haymon to compete against Bob Arum’s stable?margaret thatcher wrote: ↑24 May 2022, 14:23 loma fought teo (and plenty others........in his 3rd fight, at 26, he beat russell)

It seems that everyone is blaming Gervonta Davis for a political situation that’s existed for more than a decade, when Tank was only in his teens.
How often did Manny Pacquiao and Terence Crawford compete against Al Haymon fighters when they were working with Bob Arum?
What about when the shoe was on the other foot, when Jermall Charlo and Deontay Wilder were “prevented” from engaging in marquee bouts against guys from the other side of the proverbial street?

Re: Why is Gervonta Davis so protected?
well hot damn that might explain why tank wants to leave and go elsewhere
it was either floyd or ellerbe who after a davis win, in the ring, said something like 'we are keeping it all in house. we aint here to make others great'
if you dont have many good options in house, then you better find another place to stay. i dont blame tank personally , as i said, he clearly has admitted he's not happy with his opposition and that he wants to fight better. i believe him.
