Enlightened-One wrote: 24 May 2022, 03:11 Gervonta Davis claims his next fight against Rolly Romero is apparently his final bout with Mayweather Promotions, with Floyd himself seemingly confirming this to be the case when he admitted that “nothing lasts forever” and that Tank “has to do what’s best for him.”

We also need to remember the rather simple fact that Tank's big-name rivals are aligned with rival promoters and networks (i.e. the old PBC versus Top Rank/ESPN conundrum that affects all Al Haymon fighters).

For instance: it’s exceptionally rare for PBC fighters to face guys from Top Rank, which means it’s unrealistic to expect Gervonta Davis to be facing the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko or Teofimo Lopez.

And Top Rank also promoted George Kambosos Jr’s most recent outing against Vasyl Lomachenko and will be promoting his next bout against fellow Bob Arum stablemate Devin Haney.

In terms of Mayweather Promotions’ handling of Tank’s career, we need to remind ourselves that Gervonta Davis captured his first world title when he was only 22 years of age.

He’s now a three-weight world champion that’s already engaged in ten world title bouts, with four of his opponents in those fights undefeated prior to their contest.

Here’s a list of his opponents in those contests:

• Leo Santa Cruz
• Isaac Cruz
• Jose Pedraza
• Liam Walsh
• Mario Barrios
• Ricardo Nunez
• Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar
• Hugo Ruiz
• Yuriorkis Gamboa
• Francisco Fonseca

Davis has also beaten six current/former world champions.

ESPN rate Gervonta Davis in 12th place in their pound-for-pound ratings, with the Romero bout being the fourth PPV event he’s headlined.

Gervonta Davis is also rated 3rd by ESPN, 4th by TBRB and 4th by The RING at 135lbs. TBRB also rates him 7th at 140lbs.

In terms of Tank's bout against Rolly Romero, the WBA ordered their regular champion at 135lbs to face their interim titleholder. Gervonta is obliged to do this or vacate. The WBA's super champion at 135lbs is George Kambosos Jr.

Whilst I appreciate the fact that most of you guys detest Floyd Mayweather Jr, you can’t seriously claim his promotional company has done a terrible job with Gervonta Davis?

Tank has achieved an incredible amount, especially when you consider the fact he’s only 27 years of age. And he’ll be a free-agent soon, meaning he’ll have the freedom to fight anyone he damn well wants (assuming he does in fact leave Mayweather Promotions).
This long ass comment, and you forgot to add this fact. Notice I say FACT, not opinion.

Davis is the most protected fighter in the sport of Boxing. How good he actually is we won't know for a while, but I get the feeling he's been protected the way he has for a reason. He gets fat in between fights. He does hood rat sh*t like beat up his girlfriend in between fights. He's Broner all over again. He's just been so coddled people haven't noticed yet.

Name me any division he's been in where he fought the Top guy. Hell name me any division he fought in where he fought the 4th best guy.

Now you do make one fair point. You can't say they've done a bad job promoting him because he is actually one of the bigger stars in Boxing at the moment. It just goes to show that you can sell the casuals anything. Give 'em a guy that knocks out people, and they won't even notice that he never fights anybody with a pulse.
I’ll keep it simple for you:

PBC vs. Top Rank = No fight (unless mega-money is involved)

Gervonta Davis is leaving Mayweather Promotions after his next fight.

Every name fighter that Davis hasn't fought isn't a Top Rank fighter. I am glad he's finally leaving Mayweather's Safety Pen though. Maybe he'll finally fight a dangerous opponent for the first time. I saw him saying he wants Haney if Haney beats Kambosos. That'd be a step in the right direction definitely.

I'm almost over waiting to find out how good he is.
I think he is good, he beat Pedraza, but that was ages ago.
After that fight I thought he was good. Since that fight Pedraza has lost at the top level- so now I'm even less sure how good he is. :maybe:

I agree with most of what you’ve said, but many (or perhaps even the majority) of Tank’s big name rivals have some sort of affiliation with Top Rank (i.e. Vasyl Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez, George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney).

You are right. The kid is a sharp, accurate puncher with power. 140 is maybe a bridge too far for him, but think he will give anyone a tough fight at 135. It will take a smart slick boxer to beat him. Stevenson is one, possibly Loma, possibly Haney. Haney will move up soon I think. He could fight at welter, huge drainer.

If you don't see Davis as protected, you're not paying attention. He's ducked EVERY. SINGLE. NAME. In any division he's been in. From 130 to 140. He's fought nobody dangerous yet.

Leo Santa Cruz right? That's his biggest win. A Featherweight who he fought at Lightweight.

140 is maybe a bridge too far for him? Fighting a f*cking Top 5 guy is apparently a bridge too far for him. A Top 5 guy in Boxing period. In any weight class. He's yet to do it.

Gervonta Davis actually moved down from 135lbs to 130lbs to challenge for Leo Santa Cruz's WBA Super world super-featherweight title.

When Leo Santa Cruz fought Tank, the Mexican had previously engaged in seventeen world title bouts, defeated ten former/current world champions, and was also a four-weight world champ.

At that point in time, Leo Santa Cruz had only suffered one defeat on his resume, against Carl Frampton, which he avenged six months later… meaning he’d previously beaten every single opponent he’d ever faced.

I’m not arguing with you, instead I am simply reminding you of historical reality. :TU:

Leo was prime for the pickin'
I posted that before he signed to fight Davis but I can't be arsed finding it. Shrewd from Davis' team. They got a name and Leo's fans buying the ppv.

Would you concede that you didn’t actually express your prediction for the outcome of the Tank-Leo Santa Cruz fight?

And do you at least agree with the facts I detailed in my previous post?

Alright well being at 130 makes it a little better. Still though we're talking about a guy who was on his 4th weight class against a guy who was at his original weight. So that definitely takes a bit away from it.

But that's Tank's best win still for sure. I doubt it'll remain his best win, but it's his best win to date.

leo had only had 1 fight all career at 130, for a vacant title vs a mediocre opponent who'd already been stopped by dat ngueyn and chris avalos, and then got knocked out in his next fight after losing to leo.

this sh!t is typical of tank's career - cherrypick guys who basically cherrypicked their own weak ass title. same goes for calling himself a 140 pound champ by beating marrio barrios while taylor and ramirez fought for undisputed, same goes for fighting rollover (who got a gift over marinez to get his trinket) while haney-kambosis fight for undisputed, etc

he keeps bouncing around divisions for cherrypicks instead of settling down and actually fighting a legit elite guy. his best win was not leo, but pedraza, and that was 5 years ago. he hasnt improved on it since.

i mean, tank himself admitted he hasnt fought top opposition, he don't even try to act otherwise

Hopefully next time out, we'll see Davis in with a better opponent.

Davis should fight the winner of Haney-Kambosos, or perhaps Lopez or Prograis.

I hope your right, although I don't think SLW is right for him, sure he had a dabble at the obscure end of SLW, but those guys are way bigger. For me, LW is his maximum. a
And I think with a bit more dedication between fights, SFW is where he could really make a legacy for himself.

I didn't watch it. Sounds like I didn't miss much other than one punch. Maybe it will shut Rolly up for a while at least.

If Tank is smart, he will stay below 140, or his career will end up like Broners. I think Stevenson would make him look foolish. Loma probably would too.

Stevenson, Loma, Haney, Kambosos, Josh Taylor. Very good chance any of them guys beat him.

I don't even think it's out of the question that a guy like say Oscar Valdez could beat him.

He's protected for a reason.
