This sure did get announced quick.

I hope the terms weren’t all agreed before the Bivol fight.

Hope GGG got a better deal.

im not a fan of the fight, but if it allows bivol-beterbiev (assuming he beats smokin joe) for undisputed lhw in the meantime, then i'm all for it

btw, it gives some perspective on how much these other dudes need to step up. a lot of ppl dissappointed in this fight, ggg's old etc, yet ggg absolutely battered hyped up benavidez's last opponent, and in his last fight beat a guy far better than who charlo and andrade faced last time

Press Release

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin will meet in an epic trilogy clash on September 17. Canelo vs. GGG III will be live on DAZN Pay Per View in the U.S. and Canada and around the world on DAZN (excluding Mexico, Latin America, and Kazakhstan) and is presented by Matchroom, Canelo Promotions and GGG Promotions.

Alvarez dared to be great once again in his last outing but was edged out by WBA World Light-Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. Now the focus switched back to Super-Middleweight where he will defend his undisputed title against the Kazakh king, who campaigns at the weight for the first time in his storied career.

Alvarez and Golovkin have shared 24 thrilling rounds already in this hottest of rivalries and the pair will meet for a third time, five years after their first battle ended in a controversial draw and then the Mexican star edging out Golovkin via majority decision.

Both fights took place in the T-Mobile Arena, and while a venue for the trilogy bout will be revealed soon, what is in no doubt is that it will be the hottest ticket in sport when these two foes dance for the third and decisive time.

“I feel very happy and proud to be able to give the best fights and this fight won’t be an exception,” said Canelo.

“I hope to see you on September 17,” said Golovkin.

“Let’s push ahead without going backwards,” said Eddy Reynoso. “A Mexican never surrenders, let’s push forward.

“The Canelo vs. GGG trilogy is the biggest fight in boxing and I am delighted to get this made for September 17,” said Eddie Hearn. “These are two men that bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO.

“I truly believe this will be the most thrilling fight between these two great champions and it will be fireworks from the first bell to the last man standing.”

“What a few weeks we have had on DAZN - the biggest women’s fight of all time, an absolute barn burner in Las Vegas, and now, the highly anticipated trilogy fight between the pound for pound King Saul Canelo Alvarez and one of the biggest names in the sport Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights, DAZN. “The last two fights between these two have been up there with the very best this century and we look forward to broadcasting it to fight fans live and worldwide on DAZN.”

Twitter has whipped up into a frenzy of this news. I'm happy for GGG to get himself a final pay day but I don't think it'll be as competitive this time around. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it.

The main annoyance is if, as I think, Canelo gets the win on this occasion it'll drive the GGG fanboys crazy and they'll relentlessly bemoan the judging in the first two bouts.
And likewise, a Canelo win will encourage his fanboys to mock the GGG lot.
And the reverse might be even worse, if GGG got the win!

I'm a fan of both, I like both fighters and think they could benefit from other fights. But the history I suppose lends itself to a huge event and thus a giant payday! I would have thought this was made in the aftermath of the Bivol fight, not a pre-planned route regardless of that outcome.

For the record I thought GGG won the first but I can see how it might have been scored a draw....I edged fight 2 to Canelo by a point.

I hope for a good competitive fight, and if it comes to it, fair judging and scores.

Will this be GGG’s first fight fully at 168?

He loses and he can still make 160 where he holds multiple world titles.

The deal simply must have been all arranged before the 'formality' of the Bivol fight.

DAZN knows full well this remains one of the biggest fights in boxing, if not the biggest in 2022. Barring a knockout it's virtually impossible for GGG to win, especially if Canelo once again gets a 4 round head start from his judges.

It's also a little rough on Bivol as he now won't get a better payday in the rematch. That was virtually the first thing he mentioned after soundly defeating Canelo.

Who knows, perhaps they could fight next year?

Yeh. It’s the whole reason they signed Canelo in the first place then made that huge deal with GGG. It’s the fight they’ve been begging for for 4 years..

In that 4 years, they’re still big names. But I think a little hype has been lost.

has there ever been a boxer in history who beat the same opponent 3 times (in the 'actual fight'/ re-/rubber match) just to get fvcked over/robbed all 3 times?
Could make a case for Marquez/Pacquiao but Marquez got the 4th fight and we all know what happened.

Doesn't matter. JMM knocked Pac TFO to end the debate. 1st 3 were very close.

Going out on a limb here, but picking GGG by tko. GGG will throw combinations, follow the Bivol blueprint, and send Canelo into early retirement.

If GGG doesnt ko Canelo, he loses. Too much $ and corruption involved. He might as well go for it. Even at 40, his gas tank is better.

the debate about who won each of the first 3 has nothing to do with the outcome of the 4th fight

Very surprising predictions!!! I believe Canelo is the very clear favourite and in fact I think he could force a stoppage. Of course that is just my prediction/opinion (same thing).

nobody 'stopping' golovkin. just not happening.

if canelo brings his lazy narcissistic style of late in love with his 'skull cracking, bicep tearing, heavyweight like' power punches, he better bring the corrupt judges and they gotta pay em off real good cause it won't work any better versus old ggg than vs. young bivol.

canelo also obviously thinks punches to the arms should be scored.

agreed that they might do damage but punching an opponent with his guard up in the side of his arms is a blocked punch.

obviously not in canelo fantasy world.

hearn was acting like that's up for discussion or maybe he's really that clueless.

canelo won 3 rounds vs bivol if one scores it really generously in Canelo's favor.

an argument could be made he didn't win a single round.

canelo lost both fights to golovkin. back 2 back.

canelo won't knock out ggg. golovkin has to win 10 rounds clearly to get maybe a draw.

if it goes to the cards the corrupt judges will give it to canelo no matter what.

Well, not the worst bout possible, acknowledging how awful mismatches can be today, but there's no intrigue really. No way Golovkin wins it, but I hope he does, because he deserves it.

If you look at both of their last fights, neither GGG or Canelo looked youthful. GGG due to age and Canelo due to poor condition and a lot of fights.

Wishful thinking on my part probably, but even at 9 years older I think GGG has a more than decent shot at winning. He needs to not show as much respect to Canelo and throw lots of combinations. Canelo is too good at counterpunching with single shots with guys that fight too tentative. Even when Bivol covered up, Canelo dropped his hands, then Bivol immediately came back with a combination.
Whoever wins, it will be a good one.

I don’t think it’s a matter of skill, I think it’s a matter of speed. Golovkin is too slow for Canelo at this time in his (Golovkin’s) career. Golovkin’s footwork has also deteriorated under Banks, in my opinion; while Canelo’s footwork has improved.

Both guys would make loads of money. They are already multimillionaires. Who the fuk cares atm if G would get stopped!?

G 's 40 y/o and he is cash in. Its not like this is a 31 GGG vs a 31 Canelo in a 3rd fight.
