Michael Conlan To Return on August 6th in Belfast

Featherweight contender Michael Conlan will resume his career on August 6th in Belfast.

The opponent and venue have yet to be revealed.

Conlan fought in Belfast back in August of last year, when he picked up a twelve round unanimous decision over former world champion TJ Doheny to secure the WBA's interim-title at 126-pounds.

That victory granted him a mandatory shot at WBA "regular" champion Leigh Wood.

The fight with Wood was filled with a drama and had an explosive ending.

In the very first round, Conlan dropped Wood hard and nearly had him out cold. It took several rounds for Wood to work his way back in the fight. The tide quickly turned in the eleventh, when Wood scored a knockdown of a tiring Conlan.

And then in a stunning twelfth, Wood - who was down on all three of the official cards - trapped Conlan against the ropes and knocked him out cold. An unconscious Conlan fell back through the ropes and crashed hard on the arena floor. The fight was quickly waved off.

The loss dropped the Olympian's record to 16-1 with 8 wins by knockout.

Although Conlan wanted an immediate rematch, Wood is going in another direction and wants to secure a potential fight with Leo Santa Cruz.

He knows he will get a better version of Conlan who will fight better having been kayoed in huge way.
Conlan nearly had Wood out of there in the 1st, too.

Unless it’s for stupid money… then Wood should get out of Conlan’s way and thank his lucky stars Jesus allowed him to land the punch that switched Mike off.

He’s also got his own journey to focus on and trying to become a world champion.

Won’t happen again. In any rematch I’d favour Conlan.

Irish star Michael “Mick” Conlan is primed to make another charge at a featherweight world title. Less than five months removed from his valiant effort against WBA champion Leigh Wood, it is time for Conlan's summer homecoming.

Conlan will battle Colombian puncher Miguel Marriaga in the 10-round main event Saturday, Aug. 6, at The SSE Arena as part of Belfast’s annual Féile an Phobail festival. Conlan-Marriaga and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+.

Michael Conlan will be Ireland’s next world champion.”

A two-time Irish Olympian, this marks Conlan's fourth professional outing in Belfast and third time headlining during Féile an Phobail. In August 2019, he knocked out Diego Alberto Ruiz in front of a sold-out crowd at Falls Park. Last summer, another sold-out crowd packed Falls Park as Conlan (16-1, 8 KOs) bested former junior featherweight world champion TJ Doheny over 12 rounds. The Doheny victory earned Conlan the mandatory position to fight Wood. In an epic Fight of the Year battle, Conlan, who was ahead on the scorecards, lost via 12th-round stoppage.

Marriaga (30-5, 28 KOs), from Arjona, Colombia, has been a factor at featherweight and junior lightweight since making his American debut in 2014. He is a three-time world title challenger, falling short to Nicholas Walters and Oscar Valdez at featherweight and Vasiliy Lomachenko in an August 2017 bid for the WBO junior lightweight crown. Marriaga is 5-2 since the Lomachenko fight and returns to featherweight following a decision loss last December to junior lightweight contender Eduardo Ramirez.

I don't think his loss to Wood has affected his popularity at all, it may have even enhanced it.
It was a great fight, gutsy and exciting.

Yeh. Prior to that he wasn’t as exciting.

But being in that fight with Wood.

People will want to see more of that.

Although it takes two to make a good fight and I think most of it was also down to Wood.

this is a good fight ,Miguel has power which means michael has to be stwiched on all fight ,in a funny way looked a harder figh than wood if it was 2 years ago, ill go for a conlan points win but if mick aint on point he could get ko again so great fight i reckon

Three of Top Rank's brightest young talents — welterweight Paddy “Real Deal” Donovan, featherweight Kurt Walker, and junior middleweight Kieran Molloy — will return Saturday, Aug. 6, on the Michael Conlan-Miguel Marriaga undercard at The SSE Arena in Belfast.

Donovan will appear in his first scheduled eight-rounder, while Walker and Molloy will see action in separate six-rounders. All three bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+. The ESPN+ stream is also scheduled to include Belfast native Padraig McCrory (13-0, 7 KOs) defending his WBC International Silver super middleweight belt in a 10-rounder versus former world title challenger Marco Antonio Periban (26-5-1, 17 KOs).

Donovan (8-0, 6 KOs), from Limerick, Ireland, is trained and managed by former middleweight world champion Andy Lee. The stylish southpaw last fought on the Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall undercard in February, knocking out Miroslav Serban in six rounds. Donovan has been out of action rehabbing a hand injury.

Walker (2-0, 1 KO), from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, turned pro with a first-round knockout on the Taylor-Catterall card, a highly anticipated debut following an amateur run that included a gold medal at the 2019 European Games. He returned April 23 on the Tyson Fury-Dillian Whyte undercard at Wembley Stadium, where he won a four-round decision over Stefan Nicolae.

Molloy (1-0, 1 KO), a native of Galway, Ireland, also turned pro on the Taylor-Catterall bill and notched a second-round stoppage over Damian Esquisabel. He was scheduled to fight June 18 on the Artur Beterbiev-Joe Smith Jr. undercard, but his opponent tested positive for COVID-19 during fight week. Molloy signed a professional contract with Top Rank after winning an Irish national title last October.

Conlan Insists Marriaga is The Right Guy Ahead of Stern Test on August 6

“I’m excited,” Conlan insisted of August 6. “I’m really looking forward to get back in there and getting rid of the last fight, getting that out of the psyche and moving back in to the winning bracket. I just want to get on the horse as quickly as possible. I don’t think there’s any need to sit and dwell on the past. I look towards the future and becoming a world champion and achieving my goal. From that last fight, I think people will look at me a bit differently now – in a good way probably, with a bit more respect for my skillset ¬– but now I’ve got to go in and prove to myself I’m what I know I can be, a world champion.”

“It took a while, I’ll be honest,” he admitted. “I dwelled on it, I sat on it, I slept on it and it won’t be nice until I rewrite it but, at the same time, I saw the good stuff that happened [from it]. I understand the mistakes I made and it helps me progress towards the future and become a better fighter so I’ll have taken more from that fight than any of my wins as a professional so far and it’s going to make me a better fighter. It’s win or learn, and I had to learn the hard way but I’ve learned really well so I’m happy in a sense.”

“It will be the biggest motivator for me that I’ll ever have in my boxing career because of the silly things that happened that I should have corrected myself,” he continued. “But I’ll always kick myself for it. There are times I’ll be lying there thinking, ‘If I had done this, if I had done that…’ Shoulda, woulda, coulda… But those little questions will always creep in. Leigh Wood’s career will probably be remembered for that moment and my career up until now, until I go on and do what I know I’m capable of, I will be remembered for that and the Olympics… I’m going to start to flip the board here and become the world champion I know I can be. It’s not like I’m getting slower or getting worse. I’m getting more mature. I’m getting better with age so I’m looking forward to the next few fights and regaining my position to become world champion and I know I will.”

“You’ll never know until you experience it and you go through it,” Conlan concluded. “I could have been forgiven for having an easier fight than Miguel Marriaga but, in my opinion, I need to get back in to the level I know I can compete at. I think I can beat him and look good doing it, but it’s a stern test. It’s not an easy fight. He’s a serious competitor who’s coming to win. The only person to stop him is Lomachenko and he’s been in some tough fights with top fighters and world champions. If I was to go in against Joe Bloggs, people wouldn’t blink an eye saying I was coming back off a knockout loss and my first loss, but I think for me to get back to where I want to get to as quickly as possible, Marriaga is the right guy.”
