Mayweather-Spinks looking likely for November 4th

Post by johnswan1 »

Can't see this being too difficult for Mayweather. Fighting a guy who Zab knocked out is a bit of a farce.... Will this be at Light Middleweight so he can claim another weight division title? Can't imagine Spinks will pose too many problems - he doesn't hit hard and Floyd will be too fast and too skilled.

According to Kevin Cunningham, who trains and manages Cory Spinks, the is proposed fight between Spinks and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. seems to be a done deal.

Kevin Cunningham is quoted by the St. Louis Post-Dipatch, telling the paper: ""It's 99 percent done. The one percent is Don (King) announcing when the press conference will be.'

Cunningham went further saying IBF sanctioned the fight on Tuesday. Cunningham tells the paper: "And they don't
approve a championship fight unless all the contracts have been signed."

The date for the match up is November 4, on HBO pay-per-view, in Las Vegas.

Another slick fighter for Floyd. He doesn't seem to want to go after the front foot fighters at the higher weight classes. Mitchell - Judah and now Spinks. Hardly p4p number 1 material. Would have preferred to see him take on Mosley, Margarito or Baldomir.

This is a big joke, ESPECIALLY if it's at 154. Mayweather is turning into a complete joke, the end of his career is going to be a major dissapointment.

He will probably retire undefeated after picking up some sort of trinket at 160.

that's it exactly, Floyd knows he can outslick the slicksters and beat them at their own game, but a big aggressive 147-154 pounder is another matter. Look how hard Castillo pushed him at 135 in the 1st fight.

Spinks shouldn't even BE champion. Karmazin, the consummate ring scientist, FIGURED OUT that joke, the Russian started slowly, had a good look at him, and emerged totally and utterly in command. I had him a sure 2 point winner. He had Cory terrorized at the end. Cory ran blatantly and never once tried to fight in round 12. If he had he would've gone down or been knocked out. At the end Spinks was moaning and crying. fornicating bollocs to all of it.

While I still don't think PBF opp is that of a P4P #1 I still think he's doing more than any of the current 147 champions, but what happened to Baldomir?

I've read that Cotto bros are fighting Clottey bro's this december possibly lining up a fight with Margarito, and we know PBF won't touch Tony, but Cotto-Margarito should shed some light on welter div. So much for 147 being the best div in boxing.

This is quite funny a two time world champion who was a one time the #1 at Welter and beat arguably the #2 Light Middle and yet this fight has actually been described as a joke.

Lets not forget, Margarito lost twice to Daniel Santos.... Santos is okay, but no Mayweather.

Spinks is ok, but he's nothing special, a peripheral belt holder in an era when it's easy to pick up belts. Truly elite level fighters don't lose to Zab Judah.

but Spinks benefited from one of the most sick, lopsided promotions - Karmazin wasn't allowed to touch him in close - Spinks was Sven Ottkeing the ref throughout - he was allowed to simply not fight in the 12th, was given a huge ring, and was given the benefit of the doubt by the judges probably because Cory figure in Don King's plans.

And Don gets his way for sure here. He was established Cory as a hometown attraction again.AND even better for Don, he has got him a fight with Mayweather

Foreign fighters have been getting shit decisions in fights of recent, Quartey, Karmazin, Kirilov, even Sturm

Spinks-Mayweather isn't a joke fight. Spinks can give him some serious problems. Unlike Zab and Mitchell, Spinks is still in good shape and should be given props for LOSING 5 rounds to 7 to the best junior middle in the world!

Spinks is in good physical shape but he's mentally fragile.

It's about time Mayweather really began testing himself. Spinks will be the THIRD speedy southpaw he fought in a row, with Zab and Mitchell being the others. Before these he fought Gatti, Bruseles, Corley, N'dou & Sosa. That is all he has done in the past FOUR YEARS. When is he going to fight somebody with a major power or strength advantage? I for one am getting sick of these rubbish opponents. Zab and Spinks are decent yes, but they are the perfect style opponents for Mayweather.

Buts its okay then to lose to Daniel Santos (yes, you can call it an unfulfilled loss but he was heading for defeat at the time of the stoppage). I've not mentioned his early career losses also.

Spinks did beat Judah is fight 1 and I think started to believe his own hype in fight 2 (a family characteristic) and didn't box to instruction. He was also been the involved in some very dodgy promotions of his own. The scoring for the second Judah fight was rediculous as was the Piccirilo fight.

People go on about Mayweather struggling with Castillo in fight 1 but not fight 2... Have you seen the score cards for these fights? The second fight was closer than the first - I could see that, I fail to see any controvesy in the first fight. Mayweather beat Castillo one handed and comfortably, sure he ran and fought a dull fight - but it wasn't controvesial and didn't need a rematch.

Hamed did the same vs McCullough, shall we say that Hamed struggles with the aggressive types aswell.

IMO, Floyd struggled as much if not more with Judah as he did Castillo.

Well Judah has the best speed-power P4P and is very slick and he nearly beat PBF winning the first 5 rounds :o ). Spinks beat Kazamin who many had no1 at 154, the fight was close but most if scoring fairly round by round give it to Spinks after Kazamin gave away the early rounds.

Spinks great southpaw jab, speed, reach and height may well trouble PBF. It may be a far harder fight than Margarito could be.

BTW PBF-Baldomir was going to happen but there was more money on offer for Spinks.

Also don't forget this could set up a unifaction with DLH.

The fight was offered to Team Hatton again before PBF went after Baldomir and Spinks. It didnt get to the negotiating table.

I think imo this is down to Hatton. Just opinion but I reckon he wants to make the most of his unbeaten record and make as much money as possible before taking on Mayweather. I think deep down he knows it's a fight he will most likely lose and wants to make it his last fight. I do believe he wants the fight, but just not yet. Win or lose I can't see him fighting again after Mayweather.

Yes I had PBF winning the first Castillo fight easier than the second. Some people just don't know how to score. FACT Castillo gave away the first 5rounds against PBF, he went onto hurt PBF but also lose a few rounds. In the rematch Castillo never hurt PBF but won more rounds imo. I had the first fight 8-4/9-3 PBF and the second 7-5/8-4 PBF. I had PBF-Judah 7-5 PBF and thought Judah troubled him more.

It was a press release acouple of months ago, don't remember the source but it seemed legit, it was post Collazo, Hattons father in an interview disclosed Team Hatton turned down the fight 3 times in 2005 as they thought it was the wrong time for RH. So there isn't anything too new in this. PBF has been trying to at least get the fight to the negotiating table - whether he would of been a prick in negotiations (which it didnt get too) is another matter.

Hatton should just take the fight, if he loses a defeat to Mayweather isn't the end of the world. Hatton's best chance of beating Floyd is to get the fight on as quickly as possible, in a year or two Hatton will have a lot more extra miles on the clock than Mayweather.

I dont know why they just dont make the fight. Hatton actually has a shot at taking PBF and its the biggest money fight around. If he losses so what he can go back to 140 grab a belt and make another big fight with Corrales/Castillo. Collazo proved there are no easy fights at this level. But I have a feeling Team Hatton would prefer making the same money in 3 'easy' fights than they would in 1 huge fight

It would seem so. Mayweather v Hatton was the biggest fight out there in boxing 12 months ago, some of that luster has already been lost with Hatton v Collazo and PBF's fights since then. Why wait?

Mayweather isn't interested in fighting Hatton, I think he sees the fight as a genuinely difficult task. Sometimes I think Floyd would batter him, but then I remember that he is cherry picking his way through the weights, avoiding the bigger hitters and physically strong fighters.

Mayweather wants Oscar, who represents a huge payday, but I think this fight may never happen, as Floyd will want a massive slice of the cake, despite the fact it's Oscar who brings all the money to the table.

Floyd just wants big paydays on his own terms, Baldomir obviously wanted too much cash.

Hatton left Warren to branch out in the USA and why do this aside from trying to get Floyd. I'm not saying either side is whiter than white but team Hatton want Floyd and don't find him terrifying. Floyd had achieved nothing there (LW) aside from beating Gatti which is hardly Earth-shaking. Hatton became #1 at the weight and Floyd stepped-up, a fight at LW with the #1 guy and another belt-holder would have been negotiable. Floyd is difficult to negotiate with AND won't stay in a division long enough to fight the most dangerous guys.
also notice how floyd didn't even go to light welter until "the only guy i respect from those (potential foes)" (this is a genuine floyd quote, from 2005) Kostya Tszyu, was dethroned

I know it might sound ridiculous post Hatton fight but I think Tszyu had the perfect style to beat Mayweather. If it had been Mayweather and not Hatton in there that night I think Tszyu might have won it with the right hand.

Was thinking the same thing Nick.

Shame it looks like we've seen the last of Zoo. Hatton was all wrong for him but there are still plenty of people I would pick him against.

True look at what he did to Mitchell, walked right through him and looked as good as ever doing so.
