Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
Devin Haney says he’ll be moving up to 140 next if he doesn’t fight a rematch with George Kambosos Jr. Haney says he’s going to sit down with his team and decide their next move.
“They put so much money on the first fight with the hopes of making it on the second fight,” said Devin Haney to ThaBoxingVoice about the Australian government putting a lot of money in his fight with George Kambosos Jr on June 5th.
“We just got to see if they’re interested in a second fight and if ESPN is interested in a second fight. It’s got to make sense to the network, for the people that are putting the money up,” said Haney about a potential rematch with Kambosos Jr.
It wouldn’t be surprising if the Australian government or ESPN aren’t interested in seeing the two fighters again because the ratings & ticket sales might not be worthwhile.
“We have to see if he [Kambosos] actually wants it, the second fight,” said Haney. “If I don’t fight him, I don’t think I’ll be fighting at 135 any longer. We got to see. If he wants the fight, I’ll probably have to vacate because it’s a rematch clause,” said Haney.
Moving up to 140 would open the doors to Haney fighting these guys:
• Regis Prograis
• Jose Ramirez
• Jack Catterall
• Jose Zepeda
“You can’t go fight another fight at 135 if he wants the fight. Loma and Tank, those are the fights that interest me the most, but I’ll fight anybody. My team will sit down and see what’s more interesting,” said Haney.

I'm not sure this contractual rematch with Kam happens..margaret thatcher wrote: ↑10 Jun 2022, 06:34 what's loma's status. is he ready to fight soon. haney-loma would be cool

Surely there would have been clauses..
plan was Haney-Kam 2 in the fall, then a PPV with Loma probably early 2023.

He’s an absolutely huge lightweight.
Looked a whole division bigger than Kam and he’s 23.
Unless his next fight is Tank, Garcia or Loma then I wouldn’t mind him moving up.
I don’t want to see a Kam rematch but I understand if it has to happen.
Fight Taylor for his 3 belts then go after the WBA.
Undisputed undisputed, bitches.

Top fights at 135: Lokachenko, Lopez, Davis, Garcia.
Top fights at 140: Taylor, Catterall
135 also makes him more money so unless he struggles to make weight, why leave just yet?

Loma and Lopez fights are in-house and easy to make..
Davis fights in-house, but Haney is self-promoted, so can fight Davis after his 3 fight deal with TR expires. Ryan Garcia is all talk - but it's DAZN, Haney has a good relationship with them and Hearn, who is also with DAZN.
the 140 fights won't be hard to make.. Taylor is in-house, so is the likes of Zepeda and maybe one or two others.. Catterall is just in limbo.. So i'm sure a fight with him won't be hard to make.
Re: Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
I wouldn't consider Lopez a fight likely to take place at 135. He seems to be moving to 140.
Re: Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
Haney is a huge drainer. He's big enough to fight at 147, being the same size as Floyd was. Probably walks around at 160.
Re: Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
Now for him it's more about fights, not weights. Fight Loma or Davis anywhere.
Re: Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
He did look a weight class above Kambosos.
And being 23/24 I guess we all expect him to grow and move up.
It is a real shame for him to leave the division without answering the "is he the best" question.
And if he doesn't fight any of the following Loma, or Garcia or Lopez it will be a shame.
Obviously no one is going to let Tank anywhere near him.
But if he can't make the weight easily, then it is what it is. We have seen guys under perform due to weight drain, and personally I like to see guys at their best.

i wouldnt want to see a rematch, haney has kambosos number , he could box like that for 20 rds he has the size also on kam, loma fight would be good i think loma was out of sorts v lopez , i think he deserves a big fight , and hanely would be it
Re: Devin Haney moving up to 140 if no rematch with George Kambosos
I wonder how long Kombosis can keep Haney from fighting others at 135 because of the rematch clause? If it doesn't happen this year, he should move up.

Kambo should look to fight haney again in October or November (december at the absolute latest) in sydney. He wont want to waste time in his carrer either.
If Haney dosent want to waste time, then he will have to come up with a bigggg hunk of cash to pay kambo to forfit his contractual right. Or a top shelf lawyer that can weezle him out of it (althought that risks wasteing much more time than just fighting).
