Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Liam Smith Clash is Possibility, Says Shalom

Chris Eubank could face Liam Smith next, although promoter Ben Shalom says the time is now for Eubank to be fighting for world titles.

While signed to Wasserman, Eubank still has at least one fight left on a contract with BOXXER and Sky Sports.

Eubank is ranked No 1 by the WBA at middleweight, while he is No 3 and 4 with the WBC and WBO respectively. But if a world title fight cannot be made for this year, Shalom says he would like him to face former WBO super welterweight champion Liam Smith, who is on a good run of form having beaten Anthony Fowler and Jessie Vargas in his last two fights.

“We want Chris to fight for a world title or Liam Smith next, those are the two most obvious routes,” Shalom said.

“Liam has looked really good in his last two fights and I think he fancies it at 160. Liam Smith, a world title and then the bigger fights will come for Chris.

“He needs to just get in there, he is in his prime, now is the time for world titles for him if there ever was one.”

There had been talk of Eubank – who last boxed when beating Liam Williams in February - fighting Kell Brook, until the former IBF welterweight champion announced his retirement.

“I’m kind of glad the Kell Brook thing didn’t happen because Kell Brook should have retired, and for Chris’s sake, I think he is really talented enough to win a world title.

“I know that financially the Kell Brook fight made sense, but he is good enough to win a world title and that would hang over him. The time is now.”

Eubank, 32, did hold the WBA interim middleweight title (a title the WBA since abolished under their promise to reduce the number of belts) and also held an IBO belt at super-middleweight. Apart from that, his one shot at a generally recognized world title came when he lost to George Groves for the WBA super middleweight title as part of the World Boxing Super Series in 2018.

Liam Smith straight forward UD.
Williams was easily at times out boxing and out punching Eubank but just kept getting dropped by nothing shots.
They’re probably the same natural size and I just can’t see how Eubank wins.

Great fight … if it happens.

I haven’t got a clue why, I think Eubank will SD this.

I honestly believe once retired we will be saying what a waste of talent Eubank was.

Be interesting, Smith went life and death with Williams twice.

Eubank hurt him everytime he caught him, but his famed aggression and workrate were non existent that night.

I voted Smith Pts.

What's this latest obsession for Eubank jnr (who can compete at Super middleweight) to fight light middleweights (Brook, Smith) :maybe:

Eubank jnr is really destroying his career if he goes through with these sort of fights.

How hard can it be to get a shot at a WBO title FFS if Danny Dignum can land a shot !?

Ohh!
Good fight if it happens, Liam on a roll, Eubank on a slide.
I've been really impressed with Liam vs Vargas and Fowler. Just relentless and spiteful work.
It's like the narrow loss to Kurbanov fired something up in him and he came out since, with a real vicious streak. :box:

I don't think so Spud.
George Groves showed us what he was, and I haven't seen a better version of Eubank Jr since that fight.
I could be wrong and Eubank goes and has a fairytale career twilight period, because he is 32 now. But given the way he has been matched, and its been four years since Groves- then it seems to me unlikely.

seems like every fight that gets thrown around for jr is one that no one was calling for and that makes little sense based on his position in the mw division

i dont think he really wants to make a serious go for a title or vs top guys, he likes being a celebrity/personality first and foremost, who does a bit of fighting on the side

i dont doubt that beefy would give him a go, but would rather see jr challenge himself vs, say, jani or the guy who pounded beefy - munguia

It's been over 4 years since Groves, and no title fight.

Another career smaller guy who was seen shop worn enough for the basic Fowler to beat recently.
I think it highlights Eubanks ambitions when all get are this and calling out Kell Brook .. a welterweight.

I think Liam’s a bit too small and has too many miles on the clock which is probably exactly why Jr would be interested in this fight

It's more hot air from Ben 'box Office' Shalom. He hasn't got Smith on his books, and knows it's a fight he can't make.

'Box Office' is struggling to get title fights isn't he. I don't think he's delivered one for SLY yet.

Interesting that he only has one fight left with ‘boxxer’.

Does this mean he will be on Channel 5 under Wasserman afterwards?

He kind of spearheaded the launch of Boxxer. They need some big names as Parker doesn’t quite cut it.

Eubank back to channel 5 would be backwards for him. He needs SKY and eventually their PPV model. Thou, I don't think he would be a big seller on PPV. Eubank only seems to fight once a year, there's probably only a few fights for him out there that could be made that could end up on PPV.

I think Eubank easily beats Smith, (due to his size) probably a similar fight to the Williams one.

Eubank 33 this year, so probably only has a few good years left in him.

It seems to me Eubank has avoided fighting anyone decent outside the WBSS. I still think he's somewhere between british and European level at best.
