I'll say this for Dickie - what an absolutely lovely boxer he was, all class! His fight vs Henky Gun was the first time I saw him fight.

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
I remember Dickies two televised fights for the WBC international title - one against Indonesian Henky Gun and the other was a first defence against Kamel Bou Ali - he stopped Henky Gun in five rounds to become the first Brit to win a WBC international title (I think he might have just pipped Gary Jacobs...) but he jumped in class with the fight in his first defence against Kamel Bou Ali who stopped him in five rounds on cuts...

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
Great summary Bennie
Despite the late surge of successful British title defences, I too felt Havard should and could of achieved more. Certainly a European title.
I have no qualms with his loss to Molina, who was a bit special, and you can't go from boxing 8 round level opponents to excellent world champions like Molina in the next fight and expect it to end well. Seems W@rren still hasn't learned the lesson to this day
Harvard was a class boxer and I used to be mesmerised watching him ply his skills.

Kamel Bou Ali was a very early WBO champion. I remember lots of British fighters targeting him and thinking how sh1t the WBO was and how it was ruining the game by having another championship. Wow, a lot has changed since then !Fray Bentos wrote: ↑15 Feb 2021, 09:22 I remember Dickies two televised fights for the WBC international title - one against Indonesian Henky Gun and the other was a first defence against Kamel Bou Ali - he stopped Henky Gun in five rounds to become the first Brit to win a WBC international title (I think he might have just pipped Gary Jacobs...) but he jumped in class with the fight in his first defence against Kamel Bou Ali who stopped him in five rounds on cuts...

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
Sorry to move the thread on
Can't help but feel Buncey kind of glossed over the refereeing consistency debate when he decided to compare Warrington not being stopped in the 4th to Groves being stopped in his fight with Froch.....
Surely the consistency arguement isn't between two British fighters, but when it's a no-mark foreign guy here to be beaten vs the A-side cash cow. If LARA was in the trouble Josh was in, in round 4, it gets waved off, no question.
Buncey went on to say how such a decision the ref has to make has such an impact on future earnings etc....for the A side fighter, it's a travesty if they can't have every possible opportunity to be able to keep on earning their millions....
But filp that, round.....Lara in a bit of bother in round 4, Bunce would be of the mind set to stop the fight.
he was never going to win anyway...
doesn't matter for his future earnings should he have managed to turn the fight around......
That's where the inconsistency is.

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
I'll have to listen to the Pod soon.
I'm nowhere near as anti-BBBofC, judges and referees as many on here, but have moaned about the inconsistency of referees and not just in Britain.
We don't know for sure that Foster would have stopped it had it been the other way around in the 4th, but I suspect he would too.
In this instance we're not even talking about inconsistency across the board, it's the same ref.

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
Bunce sat on the fence completely about both the ref and O'Hagan. If he daren't say anything the podcast is a bit of a waste of time.Fightnight Scores wrote: ↑16 Feb 2021, 08:17 Sorry to move the thread on![]()

Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
I think Bunce did gloss over the inconsistency angle. Definitely getting stopped if it was Lara. The phrase British Stoppage exists for a reason, even though this would not have qualified for that phrase as it would have been a legit stoppage
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
I dont want to sound like someone with no life, but Bunce telling people to go outside and have a drink instead of moaning about fight results wasnt really the best response under the current situation.
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
Liked buncey for a while but he's talked a lot of s**t the past few days
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
He shouldn't have commented really on the Martinez fight...he admitted he saw 5 rounds solidly and "skimmed through the other "5.....what did he do for the other 2.
But watching 5 rounds only means he cannot say who has won or not, so to imply Barrett was comfortably ahead was wrong really based on his viewing
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce

Bou-Ali was undoubtedly the weakest of the world super-featherweight champions when he won the WBO title in 1989, and his reign proved an ignominious one, but he was still a handful and I don't think any of the handful of British contenders (McDonnell, Havard, Reefer, Hugh Forde, Joey Jacobs...) could expect an easy night against the Tunisian based in Italy.
Bou-Ali showed all through his long career that he was rough, clever and brave and he really busted up Welshman Robert Dickie in a 12-rounder in Stoke in 1988. Dickie landed big punches at times but Bou-Ali punched back and always looked strong. The end, in round six, came as something of a relief. Dickie had a terrible cut over the left eye and the doctor pulled him out.
Bou-Ali showed the same qualities to overcome Puerto Rico's dangerous Antonio Rivera for the WBO belt, climbing off the floor in the third round and outlasting Rivera, a former world featherweight champion who needed rescuing in the eighth, completely and utterly spent.
Bou-Ali really earned his title and he destroyed Manchester's Jacobs in a defence in 1991 (three rounds). Another defence ended in a technical draw, after Bou-Ali's opponent was badly cut, while a scheduled defence against Tyrone Downes fell through in chaos when the promoter admitted he didn't have the money to pay the fighters. Bou-Ali ultimately dropped the title on a split decision to gifted Frenchman Daniel Londas in 1992.

He’s a top bloke and in the process of setting up a gym.
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
That's great to hear someone of Havard's talent and experience putting it back into boxing
Re: 5 live boxing with Costello & Bunce
In 1997 I was working selling teletext holidays and Floyd Havard called up to book one. He was a good lad, had a right old chat with him about his career, how I used to love watching him on Fight Night etc. He even sent me a signed photo, still have it somewhere!
As for Robert Dickie, horrible that he died so young. Thing is so many of us dont know if we have familial issues that can go under the radar kill us just like that. Happened to me a few years ago, series of heart attacks at 43 (didnt know what they were when I was having them) until a big one nearly took me. Apparently I had hypercholesterol issue and despite being very fit (weights, boxing, duathlons) I was a ticking time bomb. Cholesterol above 8 at the time of my last one. My right main artery was 100% blocked. Unfortunately for many they dont get lucky like I did.

Very enjoyable Steve Bunce interview with Barry Hearn on the website for free download :

The really good thing about this interview is it isn't a carbon copy of Hearn's Boxing Life Stories interview with Tris Dixon (also excellent)

I didn't know it either but the Southern Area title was a decent title when Honeywood won it in 1989. In the same year, Matchroom produced its first ever champion in Mark Reefer, who outscored Zambia's John Sichula over 12 hard rounds at York Hall for the Commonwealth super-featherweight title.
Re: 5 live boxing with Bunce
Haha, also funny when Barry said he's heard fans refer to him as "that's Eddie Hearn's dad" !

DAZN should have thrown the cash at getting Ian Darke. Costello much more suited to radio.

DAZN made a huge blunder letting Maya Jama leave, she could’ve been the next Harry Carpenter
