Boxing Forums - Popular?

I have now been taking part in boxing forums for 20+ years.. I have been in this forum for nearly 17 years …

Boxing Forums have changed back and forward from being very popular to the scourge of the earth …

Very prominent personalities within the sport have used the forums as a platform for making future fights etc etc indeed i know at least 2 referee’s and a few members of the BBBofC still use this place alongside of course personalities from various promotional companies have used the forums to spread their propaganda.

Court injunctions have been issued to various forums for reasons that are weak to say the least. Indeed a certain promotional company has even contacted my Commanding Officer on at least 2 occasions due to what I have wrote … lucky for me the complaints were thown in the bin.

The years have softened me although I have to say certain “rucks” on here had me howling with laughter and if I were honest some rucks had me spitting with rage.

On a positive for me my prominence on these forums have helped me gain full time employment in boxing … and had me travelling all over the world to work on shows.

The forums have recently helped me from getting bored now I spend most of my time in the house due to being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

What are your memories and thoughts spending time on the forums?

Do you think the forums did or still do serve a purpose in boxing?

Do you still enjoy visiting boxing forums to get things off your chest concerning boxing?

DHB used to have some really great tear ups before eventually imploding.

Unfortunately forums had their heyday and were put on life support by social media and messaging apps. A shame as I miss the good old days but then again, every old fart misses the good old days. Actually met one pounder when I was in Vegas, missed meeting others when they were in the UK.

Boxing scene seems to be the most active forum still but it's mostly dross.

I mostly talk boxing with some people on Twitter and in a Facebook group that was set up by some ex dogpounders.

Boxing forums probably peaked during the Eastside boxing days. Haye and Chris Aston was a classic moment. I Would imagine most of the boxing insiders use Twitter and Watch YouTube nowadays.

It's active aright, but the comments on there.

Overall, the quality lacks.

Much better quality on BoxRec.

Boxing Scene forums is just full of guys supporting their own boxers and can't see anything from 3rd point of view or neutral position.

Being only here. Before that I tried some social network communities, but there were too many casuals and too much fooling around for such a profound pundit like me, so I went here. However, a huge step towards registering was caused by the site requiring it after opening too many records. Anyway, I liked the forum.

I always got the blame for leaving forums but the truth of the matter is … Lightsoot (Ben) would ring me up saying he was bored of a forum … so to resolve things we either deliberately cause a ruck or announce we were leaving.

I was and still am stunned the amount of people in boxing used to love visiting us.

Another thing we unearthed a lot of talented writers with Elliot Worsell being the most successful.

What p*ssed me off more was website owners being sh*t scared of a certain promoters lawyers letters.

Thankfully I have chilled out a lot more but I used to spit my toys out of the pram at the slightest little thing but then cheered up when myself and
Ben realised how popular “wind up spud” threads were.

I am going to give boxrec another pop … hopefully I can entice some “old boys” to post again.

I often read threads on here, there are some really good posters who are knowledgeable.

So come you ****s, I have no doubts you have read this thread …. Make some comments.

I used to like the old BBC 606 boxing message board and the SecondsOut forum many years ago, other than that I’ve only really ever come on here. The Boxing sub on Reddit can be decent for RBR / post-fight reaction threads, but it’s very heavily skewed with US posters and there’s not much collective historical knowledge, whereas Boxrec clearly has some old-time gurus.

Twitter is just absolute shit.

Back in the good old days, I would have created a new character, let’s call her ‘Boxing Princess’, who would have come on rucking accusing everyone of being disrespectful to women’s boxing and how they are propping up the men with their superior quality.

Yeh, that's how I feel as well - i'll look at Off the Hook occasionally as well, but that's my limit and I only ever post on here. Less people these days, but also less 'noise' compared to the alternatives.... though appreciating the 'Spud energy' being injected these days

It's definitely not as busy as it used to be but still plenty of knowledgeable posters make it worth a look.
I also check in for the show running orders that Ruthless posts (Thanks) and every forum needs someone like him to keep the momentum going by starting threads.

Boxrec is the only forum I use. Never ventured anywhere else that has the forum tabled out like this site.

I'm more of a casual these days as I couldn't tell you who is British champ at lightweight for example. I'm more old school when boxing was exciting and had a vast array of decent boxers. I don't think you will ever out do the 80s and 90s for competition.

Boxing is slowly petering out like most sports, snooker, darts for example who also miss the players of yesteryear who were worth watching.

Everything is about money now and that has ruined most sports including football

These days visiting Boxrec is really just an addictive temporary alternative to suicide. Less messy than self-harming physically.
