Watching boxing drunk
Do you ever have a beer or two too many while waiting for the main event and it kinda ruins the experience for you? I do cause I'm an alcoholic. I try to stay sober enough on fight nights but sometimes things just transpire and I end up remembering nothing of the whole match. This happened for example with Usyk-Joshua and god I hated myself afterwards. Funny thing is it doesn't affect my scoring, it's more or less the same when I rewatch a fight I witnessed under the influence.
Re: Watching boxing drunk
I do it extremely rarely. I guess, it's common for the true fans, who watch boxing because of the genuine interest to the sport. Drinking is probably more common for hardcore drinkers or for casual fans, who sometimes watch boxing for fun, because it's about two guys punching each other in the face.

Re: Watching boxing drunk
I don't drink and I don't watch that much boxing. The drinking periods of my life didn't really coincide that much with the time periods when I was watching lots of boxing.
I remember a time period in my life when I was pretty bored and didn't really have great economic opportunities or clear ideas about what I really wanted to do with my life. During that time period I hit the bottle a bit resulting in two visits to the ER due to puking blood.
If we assume that I take the time out next week to watch a 4 hour long boxing program and finish up a 6 pack of beer and some glasses of vodka mixed with something infront of the television then what will I gain from that night? Are we talking about fond memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life? Will the alcohol improve my health? Will this night deliver me better prepared to face the rest of the week? The answer to all three questions is negative.

Yes, but mainly because I end up falling asleep quicker than I normally would if I was sober, especially for boxing events in America that are televised at horrendously antisocial hours in Europe.JackSprocket wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 02:21Do you ever have a beer or two too many while waiting for the main event and it kinda ruins the experience for you?
I’m not good at concentrating when I’m fighting my bodies urge to go to bed.

Alcohol does affect my scoring of closely competitive rounds, because the booze makes me lazy and I either end up automatically assuming the commentators are always right, when they often aren't (due to their commercial bias), or I award rounds to my favourite fighter.
No human being can perform optimally if they’ve drank a lot of booze.

I got carried away for Usyk v Joshua 1, had a few beers then thought buying a bottle of wine would be a good idea, by the time main fight started there were 4 x fighters in the Ring !JackSprocket wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 02:21 Do you ever have a beer or two too many while waiting for the main event and it kinda ruins the experience for you? Yes many times, if you hit just the right amount of booze it can be a blast, with some interesting scoring
but can’t do it if I’m staying up in uk for USA fights, I used to be able to, for the Tyson fights - but these days if it’s beers them I’m pie eyed blooted and ref tolls the ten count by 2am.

Re: Watching boxing drunk
I watch boxing in the pub, so if I'm watching a full card, I'll have about 7-8 pints.
This does normally make me wobble a bit on the way home, but doesn't detract much from the fight.... Though makes it far more likely I'll tell someone, at some point, to shut up when they inevitably pretend to be a boxing know all and bang on about Mike Tyson.
The PPV fights in America I'll go and watch at brothers house, if it's a big one.
We are both big drinkers, so will probably have 10-12 beers each. Though that's probably because when we get together, we drink a lot.
When I had Sky Sports, I'd drink a couple of bottles of wine whilst watching a card. Normally drink one a night, and the only time I ever get the TV and sofa to myself was when I had the boxing on, so I made it an occasion.

Re: Watching boxing drunk
Try to watch sober otherwise I can’t remember what the fornicate happened.
Re: Watching boxing drunk
I really like a beer or two on a fight night.
Problem is, with the time difference all the UK cards start at 6-7am on a Sunday morning. And the USA ones around 1-3pm depending on where in America they are.
So one or two beers on a Sunday afternoon is doable. Not any more than that otherwise I'll be asleep by 7pm and then awake at 4am

Good for you.
With a bit of luck things might turn around for you.
Most crap things that happen on life can be overcome. It's often just about giving yourself enough time to accept them deep down.
As for drinking and smoking, there's not much worse than having guilt about the 2 things that have brought mankind so much pleasure over the centuries.
Most of us are addicted to something, but the trick is to keep it in moderation by keeping plenty of other forms of pleasure at hand.
Obsessions, OCD, calming rituals etc are usually a sign of trouble. None of us need that.

You must have drank like a fish for Canelo vs Bivol, calling it a draw.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 04:43Yes, but mainly because I end up falling asleep quicker than I normally would if I was sober, especially for boxing events in America that are televised at horrendously antisocial hours in Europe.JackSprocket wrote: ↑20 Jun 2022, 02:21Do you ever have a beer or two too many while waiting for the main event and it kinda ruins the experience for you?

Mike Tyson doesn't watch that much boxing anymore either. Would he also not be welcome here?

Mike Tyson was a professional boxer and a subject of the forum. Re: Watching boxing drunk
I rarely watch boxing drunk.
I usually intend to, especially on a Saturday night, but end up watching it hung over in the morning having got too drunk and forgotten it was on.

I need to stop this shit. I've been reminiscing about the great fight between Johnny Tapia and Oscar De La Hoya...
Re: Watching boxing drunk
A lot of people's attitude on drinking seems to be either abstainers or drinking in double digits. What ever happens to having 3 or 4 drinks?
Kind of like political moderates, hard to find.
To answer the question: I am more likely to view a fight impatiently if I've been drinking. Lack of action in a fight annoys me more if I've been drinking.

Re: Watching boxing drunk
Go big, or go home.
I'm a weird one I suppose, will go more than a few, but never do double digits. Had enough of the hangover feeling and nausea in my late teens and 20s. Some people learn, some people don't.
Sounds like a fun OT thread to me.
Re: Watching boxing drunk
It pains me to remember, actually I don't remember, all the times I must have had double digits in a 24 hour time frame. Up until relatively recently 4-6 have been normal for me. Now I have anywhere from 0-3 an evening. Perhaps 3 1/2.
With plenty of water, I'm hoping that's not too unhealthy.
Concentrating on boxing high, for me, is a lot easier than concentrating on it drinking.

Boxing like football is way better observed with your mates in a pub pissed. I have a booze most nights, so whatever I watch it will be with me wearing beer goggles.
Re: Watching boxing drunk
Never , because
1--- If i'm watching at home on my own , i don't usually drink on my own anyway
2--- If i'm at a live show last thing i want to be is the town drunk stagerring around or shouting rubbish , to boers who can't hear me
3 ---- If i'm in the pub i want to stay sober because the place is usually full off drunken fookwits who think they can fight after a few beers
