Joet Gonzalez-Isaac Dogboe To Headline July 23 ESPN+ Show; Pedraza-Commey Moved To August

The stakes have been raised for a crossroads bout between Joet Gonzalez and Isaac Dogboe.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the already planned ten-round featherweight bout will now headline a July 23 Top Rank show on ESPN+ from Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota. The upgrade from co-feature came upon the decision to relocate its originally scheduled main event between former titlists Jose Pedraza and Richard Commey to an August 27 show on an ESPN platform.

Dogboe himself wound up announcing the news, confirming a previous breaking news report from Fight Freaks Unite’s Dan Rafael.

“God is great”, tweeted the former WBO junior featherweight titlist. “I got good news today from Carl Moretti (Director of Operations for Top Rank) that I’ve been elevated to Main Event for July 23rd fight. Let’s gooooooo! NEHOOO!!!”

Gonzalez (25-2, 15KOs) enters on the heels of a ninth-round stoppage of Jeo Santisima this past March 4 in Fresno, California. The win followed his second bid at a major title coming up short in a twelve-round, unanimous decision in favor of WBO featherweight titlist Emanuel Navarrete (35-1, 29KOs) last October in San Diego.

The fight with Navarrete was more entertaining and competitive than Gonzalez’s previous run at the WBO featherweight title, dropping a lopsided decision to Shakur Stevenson in October 2019. Gonzalez was 23-0 entering the grudge match, having since suffered his lone two defeats within his last four fights but entering the fight with Dogboe on a high note.

Ghana’s Dogboe (23-2, 15KOs) will fight for the first time in 2022, though the eight-month delay is not by design.

The former WBO junior featherweight titlist was due to return to the ring this past May 21 as part of the Tevin Farmer-Mickey Bey independent pay-view-show originally scheduled to take place in Dogboe’s hometown of Accra, Ghana. Dogboe—who is trained by Barry Hunter—was pulled from the show once it relocated to Dubai, though the event was canceled outright.

The fight with Gonzalez comes as Dogboe is riding a three-fight win streak, all since moving up to featherweight following back-to-back title fight losses to Navarrete. Dogboe lost a 12-round decision to Navarrete in December 2018 in New York City and was stopped in the 12th round of their May 2019 rematch in Tucson, Arizona. In his last fight, Dogboe outpointed former title challenger Christopher Diaz over ten rounds last November 20.

Boxing Scene has learned that the 10-round, 140-pound between Pedraza and Commey will headline an ESPN broadcast August 27 from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Puerto Rico’s Pedraza, a former IBF junior lightweight and WBO lightweight champ, and Ghana’s Commey, an ex-IBF lightweight champion, were initially scheduled to square off July 23 at Grand Casino Hinckley in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Press Release | Pedraza-Commey, Anderson-Rovcanin Announced

Two former world champions are set for an Oklahoma showdown, as Jose “Sniper” Pedraza will battle Richard “RC” Commey in the 10-round junior welterweight main event Saturday, Aug. 27, at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

In the 10-round heavyweight co-feature, the fighting pride of Toledo, Ohio, undefeated puncher Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson, returns to action against veteran Miljan Rovcanin.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with DiBella Entertainment, Pedraza-Commey and Anderson-Rovcanin will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.

“The junior welterweight division is talent-rich, and the winner of Pedraza-Commey is in line for a massive fight,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “We are thrilled to see Jared Anderson back in action. He is the world’s best young heavyweight, and fans will have another opportunity to see a future superstar.”

Pedraza (29-4, 14 KOs), from Cidra, Puerto Rico, is a two-weight world champion who has fought many of this generation’s top fighters since capturing the IBF junior lightweight crown in June 2015. He moved up to the junior welterweight ranks in 2019, rebounding from a loss to Jose Zepeda to author victories over Mikkel LesPierre, 2008 U.S. Olympian Javier Molina, and the previously unbeaten Julian Rodriguez. Pedraza’s momentum was halted in March when he dropped a tightly contested decision to former unified world champion Jose Ramirez.

Pedraza said, "August 27 will definitely be a high-stakes battle between two world-class fighters. We are both coming to get back on the winning path. That's the perfect recipe for a great fight. I know that a convincing victory against an opponent of Commey's caliber will put me back in contention to capture that coveted world title opportunity. Despite what happened in my last fight, I still have my sights set on being crowned world champion at 140 pounds. I'm still chasing my goal of becoming a three-division world champion.”

Commey (30-4, 27 KOs), one of Ghana’s most accomplished fighters, captured the IBF lightweight world title in February 2019 with a second-round stoppage over Isa Chaniev. Since losing his title to Teofimo Lopez that December, Commey knocked out Jackson Marinez in six rounds and lost a decision to pound-for-pound legend Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko. After 34 fights campaigning as a lightweight, Commey now moves up to 140 pounds in hopes of winning a second world title.

“I am grateful to DiBella Entertainment and Top Rank to be fighting on ESPN as I begin my quest to become a two-weight world champion,” Commey said. “Pedraza is a gentleman and a great champion, and I will have to be at my best to earn the victory.”

Anderson (11-0, 11 KOs) had a breakthrough 2021, securing four devastating knockouts culminating in December’s second-round blitzing of Oleksandr Teslenko. He suffered a hand injury in training, which postponed his 2022 debut. Anderson, a 6’4, 240-pound former U.S. amateur champion, hopes to continue his knockout momentum against Rovcanin (24-2, 16 KOs). The Serbian veteran has won five consecutive bouts since a stoppage loss to undefeated contender Agit Kabayel.

Anderson said, “I am 100 percent healthy and more than ready to get back in the ring. I’m creating a legacy for my last name and growing as a fighter with every fight. Tune in on August 27 because ‘The Real Big Baby’ is back!”

The undercard — streaming exclusively on ESPN+ — is scheduled to include the return of heavyweight puncher Efe Ajagba (15-1, 12 KOs) in an eight-rounder against Hungary’s Jozsef Darmos (14-4-3, 10 KOs). Ajagba, a 2016 Nigerian Olympian, has not fought since last October’s defeat to Cuban star Frank Sanchez on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III undercard. Injuries delayed Ajagba’s return, and he’s looking to reclaim his status as one of the division’s rising talents.

In other undercard action:

Tokyo 2020 U.S. Olympian Tiger Johnson (4-0, 3 KOs), from Cleveland, Ohio, steps up in class against Harry Gigliotti (8-3, 3 KOs) in a six-round junior welterweight scrap. Johnson, at 23 years old, is one of the sport’s brightest young talents. He fought at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa in January and shut out the previously undefeated Xavier Madrid.

Tulsa native Trey Lippe Morrison (18-1, 17 KOs), who lost his undefeated record in his last bout, is scheduled to return in an eight-round heavyweight fight.

Standout junior welterweight prospect Kelvin Davis (5-0, 4 KOs) steps up in a six-rounder against Sebastian Gabriel Chaves (5-4, 2 KOs).

Frevian Gonzalez (5-1, 1 KO), who trains with Pedraza, will see action in a six-round lightweight bout against Gerardo Esquivel (3-2-1, 1 KO).

Press Release | Richard Torrez Jr. To Return on Commey-Pedraza Card

Rising heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. is wasting little time getting back to work.

The recent U.S. Olympic silver medalist, who improved to 2-0 with a first-round stoppage over Roberto Zavala Jr. Friday evening at Pechanga Resort Casino, returns in a six-rounder against Marco Antonio Canedo on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

Torrez Jr.- Canedo will open the televised tripleheader headlined by the junior welterweight main event between former world champions Jose “Sniper” Pedraza and Richard “RC” Commey.

Pedraza-Commey, the Jared Anderson-Miljan Rovcanin heavyweight co-feature, and Torrez Jr.-Canedo and will be televised live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.

Canedo (4-2, 2 KOs), from Michoacán, Mexico is a five-year pro who will be making his stateside debut.

Torrez said, “I want to thank Top Rank for keeping me active and giving me the platform to showcase my talents. Every fight is a learning experience, and I can't wait until August 27 in Tulsa."

Press Release

The highly anticipated return of Jared “Real Big Baby” Anderson is quickly approaching, and he won’t have to travel far for his August 27 fight. Anderson is holding his training camp at home in the Houston area as he prepares for his first fight of the year. The 22-year-old will challenge ten year pro Miljan Rovcanin of Serbia in a 10-round bout at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. The fight will serve as a co-feature to the junior lightweight contest between Jose Pedraza and Richard Commey and be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+.

While Anderson has traveled to Las Vegas for his recent camps, he made the decision to change things up and train at his home gym, the J Prince Boxing Gym in Houston. Anderson has remained active while he recovered from injury and has enjoyed the chance to work with the youngsters in the gym throughout the spring and early summer. He recently participated in a special back to school camp for kids in the area as he kicked off his own training camp. Anderson resumed full training earlier this summer and his lifelong coach Daryl Riley joined him last month for his Texas-based camp.

An additional perk of training in Houston is the chance to hold his camp alongside close friend, unified super featherweight world champion Shakur Stevenson, who is preparing for his September 23 Newark homecoming. The two, who have known each other since their amateur days, are providing extra motivation to one another during their grueling training sessions.

Anderson, a Toledo native, made the move to Houston nearly two years ago. Viewed as one of the top heavyweight prospects in the world due to his undefeated record and perfect knockout percentage, the 22-year-old’s success has caught the attention of Houston’s legendary heavyweight, George Foreman. Anderson and Coach Riley recently got the opportunity to meet Foreman and are looking forward to a gym visit soon from the two-time heavyweight world champion and 1968 Olympic gold medalist.

The August 27 bout will be Anderson’s first since a second round TKO over Oleksandr Teslenko on December 11 at Madison Square Garden. He will be fighting in Tulsa for the second time as a professional. Anderson scored a second round knockout over Jeremiah Karpency at the Osage Casino in Tulsa in April of last year.

JARED “BIG BABY” ANDERSON
HOMETOWN: Toledo, Ohio
RESIDES IN: Houston, Texas
BIRTHDATE: November 16, 1999
WEIGHT CLASS: Heavyweight
STANCE: Orthodox
HEIGHT: 6-4
RECORD: 11-0 (10 KOs)
COACHES: Daryl Riley and Kay Koroma
FOUR-TIME USA BOXING NATIONAL
CHAMPION

A troublesome child turned potential future heavyweight champion, Jared Anderson is one of the brightest heavyweight prospects in the sport of boxing. Like so many in the sport, Anderson found the sweet science as a youngster due to his behavioral issues.

His mother, Deborah, was introduced to Toledo boxing coach Darrie Riley by a friend and after some early challenges, her rambunctious son fell in love with the sport.

He enjoyed a highly successful amateur career, winning multiple USA Boxing national titles at every age level and becoming a National Golden Gloves champion. Anderson represented the United States at multiple international competitions and relocated to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs as a member of the national team.

Anderson made the decision to enter the professional ranks in 2019 and quickly caught the attention of the professional boxing world with his skill and talent both through his work in the ring and as a sparring partner for World Champion Tyson Fury ahead of Fury’s second fight with Deontay Wilder. Although he only had three professional bouts under his belt, Anderson provided Fury with valuable work leading in to Fury’s knockout victory over Wilder in February of 2020.

Anderson is trained by his original coach Darrie Riley and his former USA Boxing national coach Kay Koroma. A member of a talented stable of athletes based out of Houston, he often trains alongside fellow elite prospects and former world champions.

He was only three bouts in to his pro career when the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While most boxers struggled to get fights during that time, Anderson remained extremely active in the Top Rank bubble. He fought on the opening card in the closed venue at the MGM Grand and went on to score to five victories, all by knockout in the bubble.

Anderson credits his team for keeping his busy and says that he stayed in the gym and stayed ready for every opportunity that presented itself. He and his team were extremely creative in finding locales for his daily training sessions while many gyms and fitness centers closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Known for his bright smile, childlike temperament and outgoing personality in combination with his 6-4 heavyweight frame, people began calling Anderson “Big Baby” as a child and says that it stuck with him. While many in the boxing world encouraged him to change his nickname due to another heavyweight fighter sharing the same ring moniker, Anderson feels strongly about sticking with it.

His personality and creative nature are often on full display in Anderson’s fight attire and ring walk. He loves to come up with new and fun uniform themes and always keeps the fans entertained with his unique ideas.

A product of a large family, Anderson credits his family and his roots in Toledo, Ohio as his biggest motivation and says he thinks of them when he needs an extra push during training or a fight. He recently relocated to Houston from Toledo and plans to bring his mother there with him as well.

Anderson defeated the formerly undefeated Vladimir Tereshkin of Russia, stopping him in the second round of their October 9 bout on the undercard of Fury-Wilder III. He added an 11th straight knockout on December 11 at Madison Square Garden, stopping Olkesandr Teslenko in the second round of their heavyweight contest.

Never saw so much complaining to the ref as Esquivel did. When he finally stfu and fought, the last two rounds were fun!
