Jim Jeffries early fights

Post by old fogey »

While investigating the San Franciso Chronicle on the Jim Jeffries-Tom
Sharkey fight of 1898, I came upon the following info I would like to
share with you. In the Chronicle preview of the fight in the May 6,
1898 issue, on page 14, was the printed the complete records of both
fighters. Here is the record of Jim Jeffries as printed in the SF Chronicle
on May 6, 1898:

Hank Griffin KO 15 LA 1893
Hank Lorraine KO 2 LA 1895
Dan Long KO 2 SF 7/1896
T. Van Buskirk KO 2 SF 4/1897
Henry Baker KO 9 SF 5/1897
Gus Ruhlin Draw 20 SF 7/1897
Joe Choynski Draw 20 SF 11/1897
Joe Goddard KO 4 LA 2/1898
Peter Jackson KO 3 SF 3/1898
Peter Everett KO 3 SF 4/1898

I have never seen that year given for the Griffin fight, but it is
consistent with coverage in the SF papers at the time of Jeffries'
death that he had an early fight but held off his boxing career
for a couple of years at his mother's request.
I checked on Hank Lorraine in the US census of 1900. There were
not many Lorraines listed and the only male of the age to have
boxed Jeffries in 1895 was a Henry Lorraine, a white male born in
1865. I have no idea if this is the right man.
Cyberboxing also mentions this fight.
One other bit of info on the Griffin fight--the referee was John Brink,
a California amateau champion. If I find any more info, I will pass
it on to you.

Speaking of a bump, don't forget old fogey's listing of the San Francisco Examiner's weights of Jeffries and Joe Choynski fight: 217 lbs for Jeffries and
165 lbs for Choynski. These weights were reported for the fight on 12/1/1897.

I also contributed my own newspaper research from The Broolyn Daily Eagle for the James J. Jeffries-Gus Ruhlin fight that resulted in a 20-round draw on 1897-07-16. That particular newspaper had Jeffries at 212 lbs and Ruhlin at 200 lbs even.
