Maskaev battered rahman in the final round of an exciting fight to cause the upset. It was really close going into the last and both were tired but maskaev stunned rahman who was totally out of it.
Also ref jay nady was terrible and tried his best to make sure rahman would win. He warned maskaev for holding everytime they clinched and even warned him for holding during an exchange! Nady was the same against eastman when he fought joppy. biast ref.
well done maskaev, who never gave up despite losing the first 4 rounds. rahman should retire now.

Oleg Maskaev (32-5, 25 KOs) won the WBC world heavyweight championship with a twelfth round knock out of defending champion Hasim Rahman (41-5-2, 33 KOs) Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas. Rahman pressed the action early on and wobbled Maskaev early in round four, but Maskaev had some good connects later in the same round. Maskaev continued to land good shots in the fifth, but seemed bothered by referee Jay Nady's warning for holding. Round six was marked by Nady's almost continuous admonitions to Maskaev for holding. Maskaev seemed to be tiring in the eighth as Rahman starting landing his hard jab consistantly to set up his best round in the fight up to that point. Although the 37-year-old Maskaev seemed like he might be wilting after round nine, he came out throwing in the tenth, outworking "The Rock" for much of that round and also in the eleventh. Maskaev dropped Rahman with a right hand in the twelfth, then dropped him again to win by KO at 2:17! The bout was billed as "America's Last Line of Defense" and with the win, Maskaev completed a clean sweep of the major heavyweight titles by fighters born in the former Soviet Union, although Oleg is now a U.S. citizen.

Brewster/Lyakhovoch and now Rahman/Maskaev

Two genuine exciting HW title fights this year, with the former being a FOTY candidate. Throat is abit sore after cheering on Maskaev.

Although Maskaev has done well in his last two fights... its still pains me to see a guy considered weak enough to be junkie McCall's comeback opponent (when Maskaev was at his physical peak) hold a version of the world title.

This is the avenue Skelton should look at.

Skelton has no chance against any of the four title holders.

He is woeful

Nady is a wanker. He's always hard on the 'visitor'. Maybe he took the fight's silly marketing campaign too far, as Oleg has been keen to point out that he is an American citizen.

I think that skelton has a genuine chance agaiinst any of the four champions especially maskaev.

None of the current champions are great, really. Wlad obviously has very nice skills but his chin is highly suspect. Lyakhovich is a solid all round fighter with a lot of heart, but he's nothing special, and Maskaev is much the same. A unification fight between those two would probably be really entertaining, actually. As for Valuev... I don't think anyone knows what to make of him yet. He's obviously improving, but his previous struggles with B-level opposition leads me to suspect that he's quite beatable with the right tactics. Plus he can't go on fighting the likes of Owen Beck forever.

Obviously the heavyweight division is in a sad state these days, but at least there is the chance of some decent unificatoin fights taking place. They won't be of the very highest quality, but they should at least be entertaining...

even though the talent of the heavyweights aint good dont mean the fights cant be exciting. I think lykavich is the best overall. Good chin, sensible-good boxing brain, superb handspeed for a big guy and stamina.
Klitschko is powerful and awkward but his chin is not good enough. Valuev has advantage in size and thats it. I though ruiz outworked him.
Maskaev is a good fighter in bursts but i think sam peter would knock him out and toney out-slick him.
some good fights out there , and toney-peter looks set to be a good one.
