Heralded amateurs getting stopped in first fight?

Post by wrighty »

I can't imagine this has ever happened in the pro game, but has a star amateur such as an Olympic medalist, aba champ or the likes ever been banged out in their first ever match in the paid ranks? The only one I can think of is Pete Radamacher who challenged Patterson for the title in his first match in the pros.

One great amateur boxer that comes to mind who's professional career went nowhere was Clay Hodges. He had defeated George Foreman in the amateurs. He was 3-1-0 as a pro. Later on he would become an actor starring as Jess Willard in the movie DEMPSEY with Treat Williams. But that's an entirely different matter.

A wee Scot by the name of Joe Kelly boasted a brilliant international career in the unpaid ranks. He turned pro in 1985 with Terry Lawless, one of the biggest managers in boxing, but suffered a devastating defeat in his pro debut when he was smashed in three rounds by fellow Scot Bobby "Sherbert" McDermott. Lawless dropped Kelly like a stone.

Joe Kelly ended up being a good pro.

I heard a story that Andre Agassi's dad went to the Olympics for Iran but on his pro debut did a runner out of the toilet window and never fought again.
