It’s always been there.. but usually the lineal champion has held the majority of belts.

It got more emphasised on recent years cus of Fury and anyone linked to him.
There has been other times when fans despute who's the real champ or who's best

Firstly going back to Jack Johnson. Racist fans still said Jim Jeffries the prior retired champ was the best and lineal. So Jeffries comes out of retirement and ofcourse gets beat.

Muhammed Ali - gets stripped of his belts after not going to war. Frazier unifies the belts but is not lineal until he beats Ali

Tyson has all the belts but Spinks is lineal. Many thought Spinks would beat Tyson believe it or not

Holyfield wins 2 of the belts but Lennox has the WBC and beats Briggs for the lineal. So Lennox is lineal (Really Holyfield should of been lineal because Schulz deserved the win over Foreman but I digress)

Roy Jones holds all LHW major belts bar the WBO but Dariusz longname is the lineal champion. Many people held that against RJJ but neither the 2 would ever get on a plane.

Hamed unified all the belts but only kept hold of the WBO and was lineal. MAB just stuck with the lineal/ring magazine title.

At the end of the days it's proving you're the best and beating the man who beat the man is kind of vital to get that recognition in nearly all cases
I’m pretty sure fans didn’t say Jeffries was the lineal champ when Johnson won the title. They would have said he’s the best and that he’d beat Johnson but no one would have been talking lineal back then!
They wouldn't use the word 'lineal' but they'd probably call him 'the real champion'. When I was a teenager about 25 years ago people used to refer to 'the man who beat the man'. I'm not sure when the 'lineal' or 'linear' thing was coined

Ric Flair used to often say ‘to be the man you’ve got to beat the man’. Not sure he coined it but it’s one of his well known catchphrases from the 80s/90s.

They may well have called him the real champ but he retired so once he does that and gives up the belt then he’s ultimately a champion of nothing.

The Ali one was a bit different as he had a legitimate argument to say he was champ but at least they sorted things out in the ring then.

The lineal thing was brought to prominence by Team Fury as the Google results posted by Maggie show.

Probably because for a long time the Ring belt was always attached to the Lineal status..

I think the ring belts discontinued in 89, and then re-instated in early 2000's.

It was awarded to Lewis in 2002.

The word lineal goes back a long time in the sport of boxing. They used to sell posters back in the day from the current champion all the way back to James Figg, connecting the world title all the way back to the British title.

Image

In short it really means the man that beat the man that beat the man. Technically speaking the lineage stopped with Gene Tunney because a tournament had to be arranged to determine the new champion but whenever a champion has retired and never came back the man who won the most belts generally was considered the real champion.

As stated before Johnson had to defeat Jeffries to be considered the lineal champion. The same thing happened with Charles when he defeated Louis. It also occurred when Frazier defeated Ali, and of course later on it occurred when Holmes defeated Ali. After that it was when Tyson defeated Spinks, and of course when Lewis defeated Holyfield.

So no despite all the critics and the naysayers and the haters the lineal title is a legitimate thing and in the minds of hardcore boxing purists it's the only title that ever meant anything in a business that is corrupted by Toys R Us belts.

Do you think in 1910 that people were saying ‘Johnson isn’t that good….Tunney is the lineal champ’’? There would have been discussions about who’d win etc as there always is but I doubt very much people would have been talking about lineal!

In 1910 Gene Tunney wasn't even on the heavyweight scene so that question would have never came up to begin with.

Fury said Chisora declined a 2m deal.

Chisora believes Fury already has a deal in place to fight the winner of Usyk-AJ.

I think it became a bit messy around the time of Holyfield and Lewis. Holyfield beat the WBA, WBC (although stripped of it on the eve of the fight) and IBF champion. Lewis picked up the vacant WBC title but held a claim to lineage with a win over Shannon Briggs - although lets be honest no way did Briggs beat Foreman.

It was hard to see anyone other than Tyson as the "true" champion when he just beat Bruno / Seldon and Foreman was in a semi retirement fighting guys who did not deserve title shots.

Obviously the mess eroded when Lewis and Holyfield squared off - but it got off the wall messy after Lewis' retirement when the clear two best heavyweights, both with equally legitimate claims of being the man and really "needed" to fight each other as both also were flawed (Vitali not long coming off a loss to Chris Byrd and lost to Lennox and I don't think Wlad was a champion when Lewis retired) and naturally they didn't fight. I think though Wlad definitely was a worthy true champion when Vitali retired.

The Tyson Fury show is becoming a little boring now. Netflix need to take the show over and give it a new direction for it's next series.

Make your mind up Fury - box or shut up. He's a brilliant fighter, but his inactivity is jarring.

He won't stay retired. Why make a video winding Chisora's team up about turning down £2 million if he's retiring? Also posting videos of himself in a sports car saying how much he loves being retired, its all nonsense.

What was the deal with this, was it meant to be for a belt or a non title fight?

Quick question: are Wlad, Whyte and Johnson the only common opponents for Fury and Joshua?

Yes, just had a quick look at their amateur records and I don't think they had another common opponent there either.

I think the retirement statement from Fury is a bit like Froch`s "did you know i boxed in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley" .. its a joke that he and maybe others close to him find funny ... plus it gets him attention.

Fury is very much an attention seeker first and boxer second nowadays.

Chisora just moved into WBC top 15 in their August rankings @ #15...
Just in case Fury wants to keep his belt and fight him as a voluntary.

Note, WBC ranked him at #18 after he beat Pulev. Fury wouldn't be allowed to defend the belt against anyone outside the top #15 though.

Hmm...Not sure why he rose 3 spots to displace Kabayel, an undefeated fighter who has a win over Chisora. :maybe:

Oh wait, I do. We Be Corrupt :TU:

I don't really care much for Johnny Nelson but I do think that he may be right on the money when he said that he thinks that Tyson Fury may already be in some sort of negotiations to take on the winner of Joshua-Usyk.

For some reason the belts have never really mattered to Fury, and I guess they really don't when it's pretty self-evident that Fury is the best heavyweight in the division belt or no belt.

Rumor has it that the WBC belt may go towards the Wilder-Helenius fight, but it may be possible that the WBC may Joshua-Usyk match that is if everybody is interested in paying the sanctioning fees so that there is an undisputed champion. That is if indeed Fury gives up the WBC belt.

I don't think that Whyte is really the end of the road for Tyson Fury, and this is all really apart of Fury's mind games. Then again nobody really expected Rocky Marciano to retire like he did against Archie Moore. But I can't really see Tyson Fury standing back for too long when there is Usyk and Joshua out there.

I think part of Fury saying he's retired is that he wants Wilder to become champion again which would only magnify Fury's worth on paper because he basically defeated Wilder three times. And it also gives Fury more of a longer look at the Ukrainian so he knows what kind of approach to use against Usyk if Joshua fails at being more aggressive.

Think the whole retirement bullshit is just that bullshit ,, retrement i hik just depends on the winner on sat , AJ wins , he says i was only kidding i want that big stiff robot , , Usky wins he stays retired especielly if Usyk stops AJ .

Would love it if AJ wins and he wants the fight if AJ came out and publicly said , only if we do it for free to treat the fans , Call his bluff and make him look stupid
