Brandun Lee-Will Madera Rescheduled For August 20 On Broner-Figueroa Undercard
The first survivor from the Jake Paul-Hasim Rahman Jr. fallout has been revealed.
Boxing Scene has learned that plans are in place for the previously scheduled Brandun Lee-Will Madera bout to land on the August 20 Showtime card at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ten-round bout will take place on the undercard preceding the Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader headlined by a scheduled 12-round junior welterweight contest between former titlists Adrien Broner and Omar Figueroa.
The development allows Lee and Madera to barely miss a beat after their fight was caught in the ripple effect of the canceled August 6 Showtime Pay-Per-View event.
Lee-Madera was to take place at a maximum weight of 143 pounds as the second of a four-fight PPV show headlined by the Paul-Rahman fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Paul-Rahman fell apart due to a weight discrepancy, killing off the show as a whole. The main event was announced to take place at a 200-pound limit, pending approval by the New York State Athletic Commission who required Rahman Jr. (12-1, 6KOs) to submit to weekly weight checks to confirm he could safely make the weight. Rahman accepted the fight on less than one month’s notice, though there was concern of his making 200 after never weighing lighter than 211 for a pro fight.
The commission changed the maximum limit on July 30, calling for the mark to be raised to 205 from 200 pounds after it was learned that Rahman was still at 215 with only one week to go. His starting weight remains a matter of dispute between camps, though a conversation between teams led Paul (5-0, 4KOs) and his Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) company to inform Showtime that the show was canceled.
MVP since announced that the non-televised undercard fighters would receive 50 percent of their contracted pay, without commitment of having to appear on the rescheduled show. It was revealed that the three supporting bouts on the PPV— WBC/WBO/IBO featherweight titlist Amanda Serrano vs. Brenda Carabajal, Ashton Sylve vs. Braulio Rodriguez and Lee-Madera—would be rescheduled, with Lee-Madera the first one out the gate.
Lee (25-0, 22KOs) has emerged as one of the sport’s most promising prospects and a favorite among the Showtime brass. The 23-year-old from La Quinta, California rattled off 15 consecutive knockouts before going the distance in his last fight, a ten-round decision win over Brooklyn’s Zachary Ochoa on April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The bout aired on Showtime and its YouTube channel preceding the Errol Spence-Yordenis Ugas four-fight Showtime PPV telecast, marking Lee’s first time fighting past the seventh round. It was also the first time that Lee has been forced to go to the scorecards since May 2018 in his ninth pro fight.
Madera (17-1-3, 10KOs) has won two straight since a stunning first-round knockout loss to Felix Verdejo in July 2020. His most recent win came last October 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Madera was credited with a fifth-round stoppage of Jamshidbek Najmitdinov, who was unable to continue after suffering an arm injury.
Lee-Madera is added to an already announced show that—in addition to the Broner-Figueroa main event—includes two title fights on the main telecast. Dominican Republic’s Alberto Puello (20-0, 10KOs) and Uzbekistan’s Batyr Akhmedov (9-1, 8KOs) collide for the vacant WBA junior welterweight title, while WBA junior lightweight titlist Roger Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20KOs) defends his belt against mandatory challenger Hector Luis Garcia (15-0, 10KOs).

Re: Adrien Broner vs. Omar Figueroa | Showtime - August 20, 2022
Adrien Broner Pulls Out Of Omar Figueroa Jr Fight Due To Mental Health Problems
Adrien Broner has pulled out of his fight this Saturday, August 20th, against Omar Figueroa Jr, saying that he has mental health issues right now that he has to deal with.
Broner vs. Figueroa Jr was supposed to headline this Saturday night on Showtime from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
There’s no word yet whether Broner’s management at PBC or if Showtime can persuade him to stick it out because it’s going to be difficult to replace him in the main event.
The former four-division world champion Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) says he needs to “make some changes for the better” in his life. “I’m not about to play inside the ring I’ve watched a lot of people die,” said Broner.
The logical question is, how long did Broner know that he had a mental health problem?
Did it just pop up, or was it in there from the start of the promotion? Ideally, it would have been better if Broner had clued his management in about his problems earlier rather than waiting until the week of the fight before revealing the issue.
If PBC has someone that can step in to fight Figueroa Jr (28-2-1, 19 KOs), that would be excellent. However, it wouldn’t be fair for the 32-year-old Figueroa to fight someone he’s not prepared for.
AB’s decision to pull out of the fight may have saved him from a loss because Figueroa Jr is a bad-style match-up for him. He throws a lot of punches, and there’s no way Broner would be able to keep up with him.
Broner’s comment about his belief that he’ll wind up in the Boxing Hall of Fame seems out of touch with reality because his victories have come against lesser fighters.
Although Broner has captured world titles in four divisions, the guys he beat weren’t huge talents. Broner has done little with his career since moving up to welterweight in 2012. If he’s elected into the Hall of Fame, they’ll be giving it to him for the early years of his career.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Omar Figueroa | Showtime - August 20, 2022
Lipinets Replaces Broner As Figueroa’s Opponent In Showtime Main Event Saturday Night
Omar Figueroa Jr. quickly secured a new opponent Monday morning in the aftermath of Adrien Broner’s abrupt withdrawal from their fight scheduled for Saturday night.
Boxing Scene has confirmed that Figueroa will square off against Sergey Lipinets in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event in Hollywood, Florida. Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) was readily available to step in and face Figueroa because he was scheduled to oppose Paraguay’s Carlos Manuel Portillo (22-4, 17 KOs) in an eight-round bout on the non-televised portion of the Broner-Figueroa undercard at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger first reported that Lipinets will fight Figueroa.
Kazakhstan’s Lipinets has not fought since he suffered a one-sided, sixth-round knockout loss to welterweight contender Jaron Ennis (29-0, 27 KOs, 1 NC) in April 2021 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The 33-year-old Lipinets, a former IBF junior welterweight champion, later announced that he moved back down to the 140-pound division following five fights as a welterweight.
Broner was supposed to end an 18-month layoff by facing Figueroa, but the former four-division champion revealed through his Instagram account Monday morning that mental health struggles forced him to pull out of their 12-round, 140-pound bout. Cincinnati’s Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs, 1 NC) has fought just three times in the past five years and not since he out-pointed Puerto Rico’s Jovanie Santiago (14-2-1, 10 KOs) in a 12-round main event Showtime televised in February 2021 from Mohegan Sun Arena.
Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) will end a long layoff of his own when he battles Lipinets. The Weslaco, Texas native hasn’t boxed since welterweight contender Abel Ramos (27-5-2, 21 KOs) stopped him after six rounds in a May 2021 bout that took place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Figueroa, 32, has been open about his own mental health issues during the buildup toward his fight Saturday night. He, too, has moved down from welterweight to junior welterweight for his return to the ring.
The rest of Showtime’s four-fight broadcast remains intact for Saturday night.
The Dominican Republic’s Albert Puello (20-0, 10 KOs) and Uzbekistan’s Batyr Akhmedov (9-1, 8 KOs) are scheduled to fight for the vacant WBA 140-pound championship in the 12-round co-feature of a telecast set to begin at 8 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. PT. In the bout before Puello meets Akhmedov, Venezuela’s Roger Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20 KOs) will defend his WBA world 130-pound championship against the Dominican Republic’s Hector Luis Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) in a 12-rounder.
The telecast will open with a 10-round, 143-pound bout between Brandun Lee (25-0, 22 KOs), of La Quinta, California, and Will Madera (17-1-3, 10 KOs), of Albany, New York.

CBA creating a new thread..
Lipinets was scheduled on the undercard in an 8 rounder, so at least he's been in training.

Press Release
In an all-action crossroads clash, former world champions Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. and Sergey Lipinets will battle in a 12-round WBC Super Lightweight title eliminator headlining live on SHOWTIME this Saturday, August 20 from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions Event.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will also feature top 140-pounders Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov squaring off for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Championship in the co-main event and WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez defending his title against unbeaten Hector Garcia. In the telecast opener, Brandun Lee, one of the sport’s most exciting prospects and biggest punchers, will take on Will Madera in a 10-round super lightweight bout opening a loaded four-fight telecast that begins live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Additionally, SHOWTIME SPORTS will offer live streaming coverage of unbeaten Cuban heavyweight standout Lenier Peró battling Joel Caudle in an eight-round bout and undefeated middleweight Fiodor Czerkaszyn taking on Gilbert Venegas Jr. in an eight-round duel via the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page prior to the start of the televised quadrupleheader. The streaming show begins at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and will be called by SHOBOX® analyst and MORNING KOMBAT host Brian Campbell alongside former unified welterweight world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman joining as guest analyst.
Four-division world champion Adrien Broner pulled out of the previously scheduled match against Figueroa, citing personal issues in advance of the fight.
"Man, I'm going [through] a lot at this moment in my life, but I ain't gonna give up. I set some more goals and I finish what I started but sorry to say this, but I'm not fighting August 20," Broner said in an Instagram post. “Sorry to all my fans but Mental Health is real and I’m not about to play inside the ring … So, I have to step back and overcome this obstacle before I go put my life on the line inside the square circle again. I know I’m far from being finished with the sport SEE Y’ALL SOON.’’
The 32-year-old Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) is from a fighting family along with his younger brother Brandon, a former super bantamweight world champion. Figueroa won the WBC Lightweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Nihito Arakawa in a 2013 “Fight of the Year” and successfully defended the title two times before moving up to super lightweight in 2015. Figueroa has also fought at welterweight, earning action-packed victories over Robert Guerrero, John Molina Jr., and Antonio DeMarco. He’ll move back down to super lightweight on August 20 after back-to-back defeats against Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos. His match against Lipinets is a classic crossroads fight.
"This is going to be a great fight against Lipinets and I hope he's ready for what I'm bringing," said Figueroa. "I've made changes in my life and I'm excited to see the kind of fighter that I am now. I'm going to show what I can do now that I have a clear head and a clear path ahead of me. With the opponent change I'm even more ready to take all the frustrations and anger that have built up in camp and bring it into the ring on Saturday and come out victorious."
Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) has been in training and was already scheduled to appear on the August 20 card before being elevated as a replacement for Broner in the main event. Born in Martuk, Kazakhstan and now living in Woodland Hills, Calif., Lipinets is no stranger to the main stage, having tangled with champions including Lamont Peterson and Mikey Garcia. The 33-year-old defeated Akhiro Kondo for the IBF super lightweight title in 2017 and lost the title to Garcia by unanimous decision in 2018. He is coming off a loss to Jaron Ennis in a welterweight title in April 2021.
“We’ve actually been in camp for almost three months getting ready for whoever they put in front of me,” said Lipinets. “We’ve been training with no particular opponent in mind. There have been a few different guys that have said they wanted to fight me. So, we’ve been sparring with and preparing for all types of styles. And now we get this great news that I get to fight Figueroa this Saturday. I can’t wait to show everyone that I’m still a force to be reckoned with at 140 pounds.”

Puello Pumped For Akhmedov: I'm Ready To Be Crowned WBA Champion!
Alberto Puello is only days away from his high stakes bout with Batyr Akhmedov, as they collide for the vacant WBA junior welterweight belt.
The bout is part of a Showtime televised quadrupleheader, on Saturday, August 20, from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Josh Taylor vacated the title to focus on a looming rematch with Jack Catterall.
“I feel great. I’m focused on what has been an intense preparation with brand new challenges that I had never encountered before, but I am very satisfied with the results we have obtained ahead of the fight so far. This week is a lot more relaxed. We have been lightening our load as the fight gets closer. What’s left is keeping up our winning mentality, the one we always have, to then come out and shine on August 20," Puello said.
The upcoming contest is easily the biggest fight in Puello's career.
Akhmedov has won two in a row, both by stoppage, after losing a close twelve round decision to Marrio Barrios in September of 2019.
“This is going to be the most important fight of my career so far, no doubt about it. The biggest opportunity I’ve had. I’m ready to seize it against a quality opponent that has given people a lot to talk about, that’s for sure. However, I’m ready to be crowned as champion and take the title," Puello said.
“I don’t know much about Batyr Akhmedov. I saw his last fight against Argenis Méndez and the one he had previously against Mario Barrios, but not much more than that. My coach and I have Batyr studied up, having watched video of him, but that isn’t the most important thing for me anyway. I’m focused on me and on being 100%, because at the end of the day he could come out fighting in a totally different way."

There’s literally 19 people at this fight.
Apologies 29.

IDK how Showtime keeps putting up with Haymon's shenanigans. He's been putting up straight trash fights.
Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Omar Figueroa | Showtime - August 20, 2022
Trash fight. I can't believe Figueroa was knocking on being a contender after having done zero in 5 years! Lipinets dominated so bad that he only hurt his hand on Figueroa's face. The Broner fight would've been dull and boring.

Figaroa has now lost 3 in a row.
I really thought he had promise and could have come back strong after Ugas.
Lipinets showed him exactly where his level is today.

In an undercard fight a Polish/Ukrainian fighter Fiodor Czerkaszyn retained his unbeaten record with a KO4 of Gilberto Venegas Jr who took thus first stoppage loss.
The European fighter went to 20-0 and if he stays busy will, I hope, make an impression on the world scene.
He's 26 now so needs to get moving.

Lipinets came in and told Fig to sit back down.
Puello surprised me..
Garcia didn’t, I kinda had him beating Roger prior anyway.
Thats 2 new Dominican world champions.

Re: Sergey Lipinets vs. Omar Figueroa | Showtime - August 20, 2022
Domination from Lipinets, done as he pleased, dropped Figueroa with a well timed right hand in the 2nd, couldn't miss Figueroa with the right all night, Figueroa is brave but there to be hit, always in range and couldn't get out of the way of the rights, he tried switching a few times but looked desperate, Lipinets started bringing the body shots into play and that was the beginning of the end, good to see his corner realise their man was on a hiding to nothing
