Is padwork now a tik tok video?

Post by Steveh583 »

I don’t know about you guys, but my Facebook is inundated with videos of trainers showing ‘flashy’ padwork drills that are all about fast hands. Kieron farrells always crop up. Basically youngsters going hell for leather and looking good, but bypassing the fundamentals that pads were initially useful for. Has the skill been lost in this post mayweather climate?

Haven't you seen all those boxers throw 20 punch combinations in a real boxing match and not get hit by anything?
Nope neither have I, this pitty pat pad work reminds me of keepy uppy football skills, pretty much pointless in a match

Trainer is all about the noise these days. Slap those gloves instead of glove punching pad.

You’re right, tho. It’s pretty boys fault for sure.

You made a really good point about Bam Rodriguez and how purposeful his training is, it’s a real contrast to so much we see. Like you said he seems to focus really hard on perfect stance and balance and form with everything he does.

Of course it shows in how dreamy he is in the ring and how perfect his hand and shoulder position is when he’s doing all those slick rolls and mmm the perfect footwork that he’s drilled over and over, he’s such a dreamboat :yay: :yay:

Whereas someone like Josh kelly dances and gallops round the ring throwing quadruple left hooks and his form falls apart under pressure. Go figure.

Pads are great for fitness, realistically in a non fitness drill they are good for combinations, before the trainer throws something back at you so you aren't standing there admiring your work.
Pads are bad for trainers hands though, for a fitness exercise where you are throwing your 20 punch combos, it's better all round to do it in the bag with your trainer holding it for you.

Lots will disagree , but i think pads are one of the best tools IF DONE CORRECTLY ,, but 15-20 punch flashy combinations are not correctly , thats usually so the trainer can have someone video him and he can post it on instagram and facebook .

Start with you train a lad with his footwork , you then go on to punches , he learns the correct technique under the coaches supervision , on the bag and all the other stuff ,, pads then come into it by teaching them the punches with the correct tecknique , whilst moving the feet , , i will ALWAYS make ANY boxer , punch on the move with pads , whatever i call he will do it going forward , , going back , diaganol , sideways , and if he drops his hands he'll get a slap .

I NEVER EVER call a body shot and take the punch on the pad ,, i will AWLAYS take the body shot on the body , (with a belly gaurd if big lads ) reasoning being , he then has to find the correct footwork to go with the punch , he also has to decide wether to go up the middle or round my elbows , depending on my position , he has to think of defence cos he will get a slap if he does'nt ,,, similary , if i call say straight left, straight right , left hook ,, that hook is always thrown too my head , i'll catch it , after all i know its coming i called it ,, , upercuts step in throw them to my head , i'll catch them .

I wear a mouthgaurd on pads , had a couple of teeth knocked out years ago ,, i always encourage them to hit me like i said after i call it i know whats coming so i can defend againsti it

I look at some so called pad men and shake my head , just think why are your arms a metre apart boxers dont have two heads a metre apart , why calling left hook to the body with there pad two feet in front of them , teaches boxer to get his range wrong .

Pad work is great , but like EVERYTHING in the gym it should emulate the fight situation ...

Good point, I can’t remember the last time I saw a top trainer hold a bag for his fighter

On a side issue - I never seen the real benefit (aside from a fitness one) of a speed ball. Yes as a generic fitness tool / hand eye coordination there are some benefits but I cannot see much else. Although Joe Frazier used it for hooking taller opponents - now that I can see as useful.

I took the speed balls down , i just got sick of telling them all use it properly ,, somewhere , it got into peoples heads its there to look good on , hitting it hard and fast and continuous , but wacth how these kids ,/ people do it , there dropping there hands when they follow through which drops there shoulders ,,, If used correctly its a good tool to build up the right muscles , but using it correctly means holding your arms up ALL THE TIME , try it and see how quick your shoulders tire ,, but not many use it correctly so too me it was a noisy peice of equipment that got on my nerves

To be honest i've never used pads like you see used in most cases , probably early 80's i started buying what i call pads , they were a glove with a padded palm , prior to that just used gloves

I think the bigger padded gloves with a palm target were better than the modern pads

Pads for show ! I have seen countless lads on the pads who all look world class. Then you put em in to spar and they're like frightened rabbits.

Personally, I don't like doing pads. I would rather teach footwork and slipping punches in a quiet corner of the gym. Constant drills. Then onto the heavy bag for power and combinations.

You never see Angelo Dundee, Eddie Futch etc doing pads...

Deffo. Couldn’t agree more.
Most overrated training technique out there. Hit a heavy bag or sparring partner.

Pet peeve of mine. A lad doing pads overseas aggravated an old wrist injury as he was hitting my glove with as much force as I was hitting the pads. I could just feel it torquing my wrist each time.
