Jaime Munguia vs. Gonzalo Gaston Coria | DAZN - November 19, 2022

Jaime Munguia next fight set for Oct. 29 in San Diego, opponent TBA

Jaime Munguia has reportedly been in negotiations with John Ryder.

Zanfer’s Fernando Beltran revealed last night that unbeaten middleweight Jaime Munguia will return to action in just over two months at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena. This marks the first time Munguia has fought thrice in a calendar year since 2019.

The fact that we’re two months out and they announced a date instead without an opponent does not give me high hopes that Munguia (40-0, 32 KO) will fight a genuine threat for once.

Attempts to pit him against Jermall Charlo, Daniel Jacobs, and Michael Zerafa all collapsed earlier this year, the first explicitly due to Munguia’s handlers trying to get another network involved.

The likeliest opponent at the moment is John Ryder; Fernando Barbosa revealed earlier this week that the two were in “advanced negotiations,” though it’s unclear whether Munguia would move up or if “The Gorilla” would move back down. Could be fun, but doesn’t take Munguia out of his current holding pattern.

As for what could come next, he already passed on a WBC final eliminator against Carlos Adames, though knowing Mauricio Sulaiman’s tendency for favoritism, there’s every chance he could be offered it again. He also turned down an interim WBO title fight with Janibek Alimkhanuly, so he’s not super likely to be called up if Demetrius Andrade ends up ditching the full title ahead of the impending purse bid and “Qazaq Style” needs a dance partner.

All we can confidently say is that this probably isn’t getting any less dumb anytime soon.

Ryder should be a handful for a tall guy like Mung. John can fight small and get inside. Munguia has a decent inside game too, I think it is a tricky but very interesting matchup.
Hope it happens, and hope it is judged fairly because John has had a few raw deals.

Sick of waiting for Andrade...

So mungs going to 168? crazy that he never had a crack at a title at 160... one of the weirdest moves through the weight iv ever seen. Titile at 154 when he was what 21? few defences, then 5 or so fights at 160 and offered mando multiple times but just cruzeing.... Now he is suposidly looking at a tough 168 opponent.

I seems like a lack of confidence in him by his team and management. A belt at 160 should have at least raised his earning potential.
He ain't 21 any more, and I remember his manager saying back then they would be easing him into tougher opponents.... Back then it was perfectly acceptable.

Mung wanted to fight Charlo but Charlo's handlers probably wanted the fight on PBC. Mung is with DAZN.

But Ryder is a good opponent. He gave Callum Smith a tough fight and imo he edged Callum.

Mung vs Eubank Jr would be another nice scrap. :box:

TGB Promotions (on behalf of the PBC) offered Jaime Munguia the opportunity to face Jermall Charlo on Showtime.

Apparently, Stephen Espinoza claimed that Jaime Munguia accepted the terms for the bout, but GBP blocked it, because Oscar De La Hoya wanted the fight to be televised by DAZN.

Oscar De La Hoya confirmed his stance and explained to the media that Munguia’s fights must be televised by DAZN (exclusively or collaboratively).

GBP has never submitted an offer to Jermall Charlo to fight Jaime Munguia on DAZN.

Simply put, Jermall's handlers tried to make the Munguia fight, but Jaime's handlers have never attempted to make the Charlo bout.

It is important to note that GBP is responsible for the bouts that Munguia participates in and they declined the Charlo fight.

Bottom line is PBC probably wanted the fight in their stable. Oscar did well by saying bye, bye to them.

Your full of shit like usual. Espinoza stopped the bout from happening because Oscar wanted to share broadcasting rights with DAZN. Espinoza refused. Both fighters agreed on terms. It's not the first time Espinoza has done this. There is no reason why broadcast rights can't be shared, unless you're greedy.

EO is swallowing everything from Espinoza and PBC. Bottom line is PBC like to keep all the good fights in their stable.

I mean poor Charlito. He was on the verge to get some good fights with Jacobs, Eubank Jr, Andrade and Munguia but you know, only on PBC.

Jaime Munguia-Gonzalo Gaston Coria To Headline Nov. 19 DAZN Show In Guadalajara

Jaime Munguia is set for his middleweight return following a one-fight departure.

The former WBO junior middleweight titlist not only returns to the 160-pound division but will also resume his role as one of the sport’s most active fighters. Tijuana’s Munguia will face Argentina’s Gonzalo Gaston Coria atop a November 19 DAZN show from Guadalajara, Mexico.

“Everyone has been anxiously waiting for Jaime Munguia’s return to the ring,” said Hall of Fame former six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “We are excited for him to put on a show for all his fans live in Mexico and worldwide on DAZN so he can end the year with a bang and start 2023 hungrier than ever.”

The bout will mark the third of a busy 2022 campaign for Munguia that included a brief stop near super middleweight where he knocked out Jimmy ‘Kilrain’ Kelly on June 11 in Anaheim, California. His last fight at middleweight came on February 19 when he knocked out unbeaten D’Mitrius Ballard in the third round of their DAZN headliner in his Tijuana hometown.

The combination of feeling comfortable at the weight and the promise of a mandatory shot at the WBO middleweight title looming ahead, Munguia is prepared to reclaim his place among the division’s best.

“We are prepared for this new challenge,” said Munguia. “We have never stopped training. Coria is not a simple rival, he will want to come and beat me in my home country. Once we get through this test, I hope to kick start 2023 with a big fight that all my fans are waiting for.”

Coria (21-5, 8 KOs) fights in Mexico for just the second time. His previous trip resulted in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Marco Reyes in June 2019, though met with a 16-month ring absence followed by a devastating second-round knockout defeat to Janibek Alimkhanuly who now holds the WBO middleweight title.

The 25-year-old southpaw from Cordoba, Argentina has since won five of his last six including three straight heading into another dangerous assignment.

“I am more than prepared for this fight to go up against a great champion like Jaime Munguia,” said Coria. “We are preparing with all our energy and we are coming for a huge victory.”

Should the night go as expected for Munguia, the plan will then be to reload in 2023 with hopes of adding a second divisional title to the collection. For now, the emphasis has been placed on getting him back in the ring rather than going cold for the rest of the year.

“We are very happy to see Jaime back in the ring for the last time this year,” said Fernando Beltran, president of Zanfer Boxing, Munguia’s career-long lead promoter. “Jaime is always ready to fight, and this is not the exception. We are sure that 2023 will bring even bigger fights and challenges, and we are more than ready for them.”

Come on man?! It's time DLH stops protecting his boxers ffs. Crap fight. Any fight for a guy 40-0 that has turned down multiple title fights is disappointing.
Golden Boy's confidence in this guy must be zero. All hype.

Bullshit. Munguia has already turned that down, along with chances at Andrade's belt before that. He's a chickenshit.

That comment is from august, when Munguia was in talks for John Ryder.
