Roger Gutierrez-Hector Garcia WBA Title Fight Set For July 10 In Caracas, Venezuela

Roger Gutierrez will enjoy regional advantage for his next title fight.

The reigning WBA junior lightweight titlist will next face mandatory challenger Hector Garcia atop a show that will stream live on the WBA’s YouTube channel on July 10—a Sunday—at Poliedro de Caracas in Caracas, Venezuela. The scheduled 12-round bout is part of the sanctioning body’s KO Drugs festival and confirmed during a press conference held Wednesday afternoon on site.

“It is a dream come true to defend my title in my country, in my land, with my people,” said Gutierrez, who hails from Maracaibo—roughly nine hours west of Caracas. “I want to thank the authorities of Caracas for this effort.

“God willing, I hope to give everyone who comes to see us that day a great joy, defending my world title for the second time.”

Gutierrez claimed the secondary WBA belt in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Rene Alvarado in their thrilling rematch last January 2 in Dallas, Texas. The feat—which saw Gutierrez score three knockdowns, including one in the 12th round to secure the win—avenged a stoppage loss to Alvarado in July 2017.

The lone successful title defense came in a repeat win over Alvarado, a wider decision though less entertaining in their rubber match last August 14 in Frisco, Texas, mere miles from where he won the title.

Gutierrez was then due to next face interim WBA titlist Chris Colbert, which was ordered at the start of the WBA’s title reduction campaign last August—one day after Gutierrez’s repeat win over Alvarado. Colbert’s interim title, along with all interim WBA belts were subsequently removed from circulation during talks, though he retained the benefits that previously came with the distinction.

Terms were reached, a pleasant surprise given the politics involved—Gutierrez fights for Golden Boy Promotions, while Colbert was represented by TGB Promotions on behalf of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC). The two sides came to an agreement, though there was a brief delay before scheduling the fight atop a February 26 Showtime telecast, only for Gutierrez to test positive for Covid in forcing his withdrawal.

Gutierrez was replaced on short notice by Dominican Republic’s Garcia (15-0, 10KOs), who manhandled the previously unbeaten Colbert to snatch his “O” and his mandatory contender spot.

Talks remained ongoing between Gutierrez and Garcia, before agreeing to take the fight to Venezuela as part of the charitable event regularly hosted by the WBA.

“We are here not only to support the realization of a boxing program, but to accompany and promote the systematic development of boxing with an ambitious program that we have designed in the WBA and which has been very well received by the Government of this country,” stated Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, longtime WBA president. “We are pleased to know that the world program Drugs KO, which was born in Aragua, will have the full support of the State, expanding the scope of this program of ours that we have projected in several countries around the world.”

Garcia will fight outside of his native Dominican Republic for the third straight time. The undefeated 30-year-old southpaw has fought twice in a row in the U.S. heading into his first career title fight.

Gutierrez last fought in his home country in October 2019, as part of his current seven fight win streak.

Roger Gutierrez-Hector Garcia WBA Title Fight On The Move, No Longer In Venezuela

A new location could be in need for Roger Guteirrez’s next title defense.

The reigning WBA junior lightweight titlist revealed on Monday that a Venezuela homecoming is no longer in store for his previously announced fight with mandatory challenger Hector Luis Garcia. The bout was due to take place July 10—a Sunday—at Poliedro de Caracas in Caracas, Venezuela as part of the WBA’s KO Drugs festival, as confirmed at a May 25 press conference on site.

Gutierrez now claims that Garcia’s side had a change of heart, thus ruining such plans.

“I want to tell all Venezuela that I did my best to make my second world title defense in Venezuela,” Gutierrez revealed through his social media channels in delivering the bad news on Monday. “But this time [we] will not be able to do it here and I apologize for that. We are going to the USA to defend my crown.

“I knew you didn’t want to come to Venezuela to fight me,” “If you want to fight in the Dominican Republic, we can do it in your house and the judges can be your family if you want.”

Where exactly in the U.S. the fight will take place is not clear as this goes to publish. BS.com has since learned that the WBA has ordered both sides to renegotiate terms to avoid the fight heading to a purse bid hearing.

PBC has Showtime cards coming up on July 9 in San Antonio and July 30 in Brooklyn. However, the full undercard for both shows were already confirmed and announced.

Similarly, Golden Boy Promotions already revealed the full undercard for its next event which takes place July 16 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The main event pits Ryan Garcia (22-0, 18KOs) in a lightweight bout with secondary 130-pound titlist Javier Fortuna, Hector Garcia’s countryman and both of whom are aligned with PBC.

Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20KOs) is due to make his first defense as a full titlist and second overall title defense, whenever the fight takes place. The 27-year-old from Maracaibo—roughly nine hours from Caracas—claimed the secondary WBA junior lightweight title in a thrilling twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Rene Alvarado last January 2 in Dallas, avenging a prior knockout loss in their July 2017 non-title fight.

The rubber match saw Gutierrez once again outpoint Nicaragua’s Alvarado, this time in a less entertaining fight but still effective performance last August in Frisco, Texas, part of the greater Dallas area. Days after the fight. Gutierrez gained recognition as the WBA’s lone junior lightweight titlist upon the elimination of its interim titles and also Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis relinquishing his “Super” title in severing ties with the division to compete at lightweight.

Gutierrez was then ordered to face then-unbeaten Chris Colbert, who became the mandatory challenger upon his interim title being removed from circulation. The two were due to collide this past February 26, only for Gutierrez to test positive for Covid.

Garcia (15-0, 10KOs) stepped in on short notice, turning the risk into a huge reward after dominating Colbert over twelve rounds. The unbeaten Dominican—who represented his nation in the 2016 Rio Olympics—punched his way into contention with the win, entering negotiations for his mandatory title fight soon thereafter.

A deal was surprisingly reached to take place in Gutierrez’s home country. However, several figures with knowledge of the latest development have suggested that Garcia’s team suddenly lost interest in hitting the road for his first title fight.

“I’m [still] coming for you,” Gutierrez cautioned his challenger. “Whether here or wherever, this Venezuelan’s balls are to be respected. From Maracaibo to the world.”

Representatives from Garcia's team did not immediately return a message seeking comment or clarification.

Broner-Figueroa, Gutierrez-Garcia, Puello-Akhmedov : Showtime Tripleheader August 20

Adrien Broner and Omar Figueroa Jr. have a date, a site and a network for their previously announced welterweight fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that Showtime will broadcast Broner-Figueroa as the main event of a tripleheader August 20 from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Broner and Figueroa announced on their social media platforms last month that they agreed to box, but they initially indicated that they would square off July 23 somewhere in Chicago.

Showtime will televise two 12-round title bouts before Broner and Figueroa fight next month.

Roger Gutierrez will defend his WBA world 130-pound championship against Hector Luis Garcia in one of those bouts. Albert Puello and Batyr Akhmedov will square off for the vacant WBA 140-pound title last owned by Josh Taylor in the other championship match Showtime will air August 20.

Venezuela’s Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20 KOs) and the Dominican Republic’s Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) were rumored to have agreed to fight this Sunday night in Caracas, Venezuela, as part of the WBA’s KO Drugs Festival. Garcia’s handlers contend that they never agreed to challenge Gutierrez in his home country.

Garcia upset previously unbeaten Brooklyn native Chris Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) in their 12-rounder February 26 at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas to earn a shot at Gutierrez’s crown.

A then-unknown Garcia replaced Gutierrez as Colbert’s opponent on approximately three weeks’ notice after Gutierrez tested positive for COVID-19. Colbert entered the ring for their 12-round elimination match as a 22-1 favorite.

The WBA ordered the Dominican Republic’s Puello (20-0, 10 KOs) and Uzbekistan’s Akhmedov (9-1, 8 KOs) to fight for its unclaimed super lightweight title last month. Akhmedov has suffered only a debatable defeat to former WBA secondary champion Mario Barrios (26-2, 17 KOs), who was undefeated when he dropped Akhmedov twice and overcame Akhmedov’s late rally to win a unanimous decision in September 2019 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The WBA stripped its 140-pound crown from Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) in mid-May when he declined to make a mandated defense against Puello. The Scottish southpaw became boxing’s second undisputed 140-pound champion of the four-belt era in May 2021, but he was disinterested in making numerous mandatory defenses after defeating England’s Jack Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs), the mandatory challenger for his WBO belt, by split decision in a very competitive 12-round fight February 26 at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow.

As for Broner and Figueroa, they’ll square off in a bout between 32-year-old former champions who are at similar stages of their careers. Both boxers also will end long layoffs August 20.

Cincinnati’s Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs, 1 NC) hasn’t boxed since his 12-round, unanimous-decision win against Puerto Rico’s Jovanie Santiago in February 2021 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. His victory over Santiago (14-2-1, 10 KOs) marked the end of a two-year hiatus for the polarizing Broner, who has fought just five times in the past six years.

Figueroa most recently lost by technical knockout to Abel Ramos, who stopped Figueroa following six one-sided rounds in May 2021 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The Weslaco, Texas native has lost back-to-back bouts to Ramos (27-5-2, 21 KOs) and former WBA welterweight champ Yordenis Ugas (27-5, 12 KOs), who defeated Figueroa by unanimous decision in their 12-round bout in July 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Garcia dethroned Gutierrez and is new WBA champion

Hector Garcia fulfilled his dream of becoming world champion after dethroning Roger Gutierrez this Saturday night and becoming the owner of the World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight belt.

With a good Dominican presence at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida, the former Olympic fighter annulled the Venezuelan and won 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111 on the scorecards.

Garcia took the center of the ring, threw a lot of punches and left the former champion with no ideas. He worked at the distance that suited him best and the straight right was key to hurt Gutierrez.

Although in the final part of the fight Gutierrez woke up and began to put pressure on Garcia and even managed to connect hard punches, it was not enough. Garcia, far from being intimidated, went toe-to-toe in those final rounds and both put on a great show of exchanges and power punches.

Garcia remains undefeated in his career with 16 wins and 10 knockouts. For his part, Gutierrez dropped to 26 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw and 20 knockouts.

While Cruz will arrive with 14 wins with 3 knockouts and 1 loss, Mrdjenovich will do it with 41 wins, 19 of which he finished before the limit, 11 losses and 2 draws.

I had Garcia winning a wide 118-110, for first 9 rounds he put on a clinic, really neat and tidy southpaw, keeps that lead right hand low but defensively sound and shoots that jab up from the hip nicely, landed the straight left with ease from the opening round, Gutierrez looked hopeless and couldn't land a thing, it wasn't until the 10th he started to up the pressure and he caught Garcia with some hard right hands but too little too late Garcia won at a canter
