Non professional & Celeb Boxing

Post by Spud »

Non professional & Celeb Boxing is bigger than professional boxing …

Professional boxing is in a bad way … am I wrong

Agree or disagree …

Ordinary run of the mill white collar shows are regularly putting up the “Sold Out” signs….unlike the professional shows

Joe public believe their mate who has just won ABC British title really is the “British” champion when
In reality there are blokes in the local village who could beat them …‘nonetheless the show still sells out

Professional shows are full of non competitive fights where the result is all too predictable.

There are too many professional fighters who are that desperate to hang onto their 0 loss record is ruining the professional circuit.

It is sad when I wake up on a Sunday morning and youtube is full of ksi boxing hideous fights to a SOLD OUT arena …’worse still there are a number of boxing journalists covering the event

I could go on …

Am I wrong please reassure me professional boxing is ok!!

Yeah. The big fights juts need to happen and pros needs to be matched tougher earlier.

You’d probably have a better laugh at a white collar show watching the donkey derby than at many of the small hall pro shows.

Boxing will never be like it was, unbeaten records are overly protected, little in the way of risk taking anymore and these celeb events just attract the get rich quick types. In some ways can you blame them? I'm sure most pros wouldn't turn down that sort of money and exposure from fighting a nobody.

Fighters are too protected these days. The majority are terrified of losing their ‘0’. It’s always good to find a free U.K. boxing card on YouTube but then you realise it’s 8 fights of prospect vs journeyman and some of the prospects have double digit fights.

I firmly believe that journeyman don’t have a place in modern boxing. The majority don’t even try to win. How can that be enjoyable for anyone?! I’d you’re not willing to fight someone who’s trying to also win then you shouldn’t be fighting.

People have so many options now to spend their time and money (what’s left of it after paying for their sky high bills) that boxing needs to evolve to stay relevant. Promoters talk about the more networks showing boxing the better whilst in reality it waters down the quality of the shows on the whole.

Journeymen are fine for the first 3 or 4 fights, I believe, once someone has clocked up a few wins against such opposition then it just becomes pointless and it’s insulting to the fans.

With white collar, most fighters are just having one fight.

They pay to do a training course and obviously sell tickets to all their friends

It's a great business model.

A pro boxer wants to fight at least 4 times a year.

It's easy enough to emotionally blackmail once in your life, 4-6 times a year is a different thing..

Promoters need to find a way to work together to make the fights that boxing fans want to see. TV companies likewise. Otherwise it's going downhill still further.

There are of course different levels of journeymen, even guys who are always in the away corner for title fights.

But obviously when you see the 10-0 guy or better not getting moved up in class it's no good to no one

I think Pro Boxing is fine. These God awful YouTube events are a reflection of society today where you don't have to be good at anything to be famous e.g. Big Brother, Love Island etc.

We have also seen more and more populist politics creep in where the politicians just try and appeal to the lowest common demoninator.

These YouTube boxing events are in the same vein and sit outside boxing. Quite why anyone would want to watch people who can't really box properly take on people who can't defend themselves ( see KSI's opponents last night) is a mystery to me.

It's like substance is no longer important. It's a real shame that Joshua had that post fight meltdown last week, because the actual fight was a top class sporting event.

It's the same comments that I've been reading since.... well.... the birth of the internet tbh. yet the sport still carries on. not saying its not shit, but it is what it is. If I had a pound for every time I heard 'boxing's dying' or 'UFC will take over' but its still here. Just ignore the circus, its for the kids anyway.

Elitist boxing fans don't help themselves by bleating on about how the mainstream isn't interested in one breath, then labelling a newcomer or someone with just a surface interest a 'casual' when they dare speak up in regards to the sport.

This 'celeb' boxing thing is an internet phenomenon driven by the profile of the 'personalities' involved reaching a huge audience that get 'emotionally' interested in the characters, events and outcomes. Does it harm boxing? Not really. Just a shame that they will earn more in one exhibition/expedition than a career pro fighter.

The white collar/non pro stuff has been around a long time in other guises. Just organised better nowadays.

It's all about the pound note.....always has been. And that includes the pro game.

Last weekend the Pedraza-Commey undercard featured 4 young and promising heavyweights against cans. We had 4 one-sided beatdowns, about which nobody cared, instead of 2 potentially good fights. That's all you need to know about the modern boxing.

Maybe celeb vs real pro would solve this. Jake Paul vs Luis Ortiz, KSI vs Wilder, Ronaldo vs Beterbiev, .... after some of them will end up in coma, this stupid celeb youtuber boxing nonsense will end. Maybe. Speaking of myself ive never watch this celeb BS, Jake Paul fights, nor Mayweather vs Mcgregor. ....but as poster above me said, yesterday we had 4 HW prospects against C level fighters. This BS best avoiding best kills boxing.

Why are journeymen fine for the first 3 or 4 fights? That could be a new pro’s first year. They’ll have gone from the amateur world where almost certainly every single opponent will be trying to win and the fights will be competitive to fighting guys who probably just want to go the distance so they can fight 2 weeks later or an Eastern European who gets stopped fairly frequently.

I honestly wouldn’t even know about the celebrity boxing shows if people didn’t post them on here. Clearly aimed at a different demographic and should be viewed as a totally separate spectacle.

Doesn’t really affect pro boxing at all, which has huge problems of its own, but the issues have been around long before celebrities got involved.

Let’s be honest. Half the time with pro shows the undercard is awful. Last show I went to was brook khan. Terrible undercard. Just awful. You can’t tell me it was any better than any other recent card, pro or not.

But a loss or two and you won't sell anything.

The problem is that the good fighters without promoters with TV don't sell tickets as normally they aren't locally well known as they have spent their lives in the gym.

The local big names who sell the tickets are well known as they put it about around town, often football hooligans, however the problem is fighting wise they can't cut it past area level.

They shouldn’t be so worried about protecting their 0. If they’re good enough then they’ll come through, if not then they’ll know what level they’re at and can come again.

A win or two for them against better opposition may mean they get a more meaningful fight or they’re signed by a TV promoter.

If you look at the Kieran Farrell show from a week or so ago in Bolton it’s symptomatic of part of what’s wrong with boxing at the moment. 10 or so fights all having prospect vs journeyman. Sion Yaxley is his 10th fight (previously 9-0) against 0-22 Scott Williams. No surprise who won. Or who won in every other fight on the show. Macaulay McGowan was on there, fresh off fighting Kieran Conway and an old Sergio Martinez. He was as in against a 0-36 guy from Lithuania. I’m not sure how some of these fights even get approved.

Fighters will fight anyone, esp if the money is there, it's the promoters who are worried about the 0 because it will affect future ticket sales.
Remember the small hall promoters rely entirely on ticket sales, no tv, no adverts and no sponsorship or stub hub deals.
