Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder | DAZN - 27 January 2024

Jaime Munguia next fight set for Oct. 29 in San Diego, opponent TBA

Jaime Munguia has reportedly been in negotiations with John Ryder.

Zanfer’s Fernando Beltran revealed last night that unbeaten middleweight Jaime Munguia will return to action in just over two months at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena. This marks the first time Munguia has fought thrice in a calendar year since 2019.

The fact that we’re two months out and they announced a date instead without an opponent does not give me high hopes that Munguia (40-0, 32 KO) will fight a genuine threat for once.

Attempts to pit him against Jermall Charlo, Daniel Jacobs, and Michael Zerafa all collapsed earlier this year, the first explicitly due to Munguia’s handlers trying to get another network involved.

The likeliest opponent at the moment is John Ryder; Fernando Barbosa revealed earlier this week that the two were in “advanced negotiations,” though it’s unclear whether Munguia would move up or if “The Gorilla” would move back down. Could be fun, but doesn’t take Munguia out of his current holding pattern.

As for what could come next, he already passed on a WBC final eliminator against Carlos Adames, though knowing Mauricio Sulaiman’s tendency for favoritism, there’s every chance he could be offered it again. He also turned down an interim WBO title fight with Janibek Alimkhanuly, so he’s not super likely to be called up if Demetrius Andrade ends up ditching the full title ahead of the impending purse bid and “Qazaq Style” needs a dance partner.

All we can confidently say is that this probably isn’t getting any less dumb anytime soon.

The article was from a week ago..

As of today, the fight is more or less a done deal.

Finalizing stages.

Ryder should not go back down to middleweight. He's clearly very effective at Super middleweight and should stay there.

Hope you're right. John has developed into a world class boxer at 12 stone and shouldn't weaken his position.

Seems strange he can't secure another world title fight. The Jacobs win alone should be enough to get him another shot.

It's frustrating seeing other boxers without a world class win on their resume, or at least some bona fida title wins & defences, getting a world title crack...or 2nd crack I'm some instances. Way of the (boxing)world

Munguia looking like he doesn't live the life in that photo .

Personally, I'd like to see Ryder retire, he must have earned pretty well. But that said, Munguia is beatable, but whatever way it goes, it's likely a punishing fight.

yes he should have, and most of us scoring here had it 114-113 for him. most of the fan cards on eyeonthering had it for him too

https://www.eyeonthering.com/boxing/jai ... vyanchenko

sergey was up by 2 going into the championship rounds, but then lost 11 and 12 and took the kd for an extra point off. excellent fight, possible foty

Mung has been one of the biggest disapointments in boxing for a while.... I dont know why but i reallllly had high hopes for him.

Won a world title at 21, then next fight he beat up prime liam smith in a defence... Fan friendly, mexican, Great KO ratio....at that point i was envisaging fights with both charlos, Canelo, GGG, ect ect... later berlanga and benevedez became a great opponents... Instead he ditched his title, moved up, dodged title shots at 160, moved up again, and is fighting ryder (who could well beat him)....

I dont think Mung is elite, but geeze he has been disapointing.

offensively he's very good, but his defense has never progressed. at times he basically eats punches, no effort what so ever to evade. maybe it's a habit that came with being so much bigger than opponents at 154 . his handlers know his weaknesses and have matched him accordingly - unfortunetly the risks have only been moderate at best.

i wouldve loved to see him fight ggg. i will say though, the derev fight was great, arguable fight of the year

If this comes off, Eddie has done a great job for John. Canelo, Call, Jacobs and Munguia. Matchroom have got Ryder some big fights. :TU:
