Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Luis Ortiz PPV opens up for WBC #1 heavyweight spot

A fight between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Luis Ortiz is gathering pace after Deontay Wilder secured his trilogy fight with heavyweight rival Tyson Fury.

As WBN first reported, Ruiz and Wilder, are on a collision course in the future for an Al Haymon Pay Per View. Had Wilder failed to win the arbitration, that fight could have been on the cards later this year. And it still could be provided Wilder gains revenge.

But for now, Ruiz has to land a big fish to keep his PPV run going before the potential Wilder encounter. The ideal candidate has emerged in Ortiz.

Both remain rated in the top five of the World Boxing Council Ratings, and WBN understands there are viable reasons to suggest the clash could get sanctioned as a final eliminator for the number one spot.

Currently, Oleksandr Usyk lies second on the rankings. WBC chiefs will remove the Ukrainian in the coming weeks once his WBO mandatory fight with Anthony Joshua gets confirmed.

The WBC always removed a boxer if they fight for another organization title. Therefore, that leaves Ruiz Jr. and Ortiz as the next two due to Wilder being out of the equation.

Fighting for the title will either push Wilder to champion status or see him drop back a few places until he gets another win on his record. A victory for Fury would also be the primary reason why Ruiz and Wilder wouldn’t meet later this year.

It’s not rocket science that you don’t put a top fighter into a massive Pay Per View on the back of two defeats in a row. Wilder would have to return with a win, potential on a double-header card with Ruiz in November or December to get back in the mix.

By that time, Ruiz could be the WBC’s number one contender. The Wilder PPV then becomes even more lucrative as a possible battle for the mandatory spot to Fury.

It’s hard to imagine Wilder getting another opportunity at Fury if he loses to “The Gypsy King” twice. However, if he earns that shot, there’s not much Fury can do in that respect.

Rankings supplied by the WBC have altered little over the coming months due to the pandemic. But with all the major stars being in action over the summer, plenty will switch around before the fall.v

Andy Ruiz-Luis Ortiz To Headline September 4 Fox Sports Pay-Per-View From Crypto.com Arena

Andy Ruiz and Luis Ortiz will keep the same destination for their new fight date.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene, the heavyweight clash will top a Fox Sports Pay-Per-View event on September 4, which changed from a previously targeted August 13 date. The event will still take place at Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon in the form of a ticket sale announcement.

Tickets for the event are available for pre-sale beginning Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. PT. The pre-sale will run through 10:00 p.m. PT, available for purchase on AXS.com using codes BOXING or CRYTPO.

General ticket sales will begin Thursday 10:00 a.m. PT, also on AXS.com.

Ruiz (34-2, 22KOs) has not fought since a twelve-round decision victory over Chris Arreola in their battle of California-based Mexican heavyweights last May 1 in Carson, California.

The fight was the first for Ruiz since his two-fight series with Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22KOs) before the pandemic, having knocked out the Brit in the seventh round of their June 2019 WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The rematch saw Ruiz showing up grossly out of shape and dropping a lopsided decision to Joshua six months later in Saudi Arabia.

A fight with Ortiz (33-2, 28KOs) was discussed for May 2020, only for the global pandemic to shut down those plans and the sport as a whole. The fight never came back around, with Ortiz having scored two knockouts in that time—a 45-second blitzing of Alexander Flores in November 2020 and an off-the-canvas, sixth-round knockout of former IBF heavyweight titlist Charles Martin on New Year’s Day in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In between those two fights, Ortiz—a Cuban southpaw based out of Miami—was ringside for Ruiz’s win over Arreola, eager to move forward with such a fight. Those plans were curbed, only materializing earlier this year but not until after it was learned that Ruiz initially agreed to a rust-shaking fight with Tyrone Spong. The fight was announced by Triller Fight Club, who was prepared to present a July 16 PPV event from Plaza de Toros in Mexico City.

To the company’s credit, Triller immediately walked back its announcement once learning that Ruiz already committed to a fight with Ortiz that was not revealed at the time.

The event marks the first Fox Sports-branded boxing telecast since February 5, when Keith Thurman outpointed Mario Barrios atop a Fox Sports PPV from Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. PBC on Fox has traditionally run a pre-Labor Day card on the Sunday of the holiday weekend, though previously limited to its free-to-air Fox network.

A lead-in show on its lineal network is expected for the forthcoming event, though further details of such bouts on that portion of the PPV undercard were not made available as this goes to publish.

Rising unbeaten super welterweight Joey Spencer will battle Mexican contender Kevin Salgado in a 10-round showdown highlighting PBC action live on FOX and FOX Deportes beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on September 4 during Labor Day Weekend from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Prior to the FOX broadcast, undefeated top super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem takes on Mike Plania in a 10-round attraction live on FS1 and FOX Deportes beginning at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

The 22-year-old Spencer (15-0, 10 KOs) turned pro in February 2017 and immediately caught the eye of fans and pundits with his combination of speed, power and athleticism. Following an impressive 2020 campaign, the Linden, Michigan native added three more victories to his ledger in 2021, including his first eight-round fight as he earned a unanimous decision over James Martin in July. Most recently, Spencer kicked off his 2022 with another unanimous decision victory, this time besting Ravshan Hudaynazaro in March.

"I can’t wait to get back in the ring on September 4,” said Spencer. “I'm training extremely hard and I’m in amazing shape. This is a great opportunity for me to shine on a big stage and really show what I’m capable of. I’m looking forward to bringing the fans lots of excitement!"

A native of Mexico City, Salgado (14-0-1, 9 KOs) is the younger brother of former super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado and now fights out of San Antonio, Texas. The 24-year-old turned pro in late 2016 and delivered knockouts in six of his first nine outings. After scoring three-straight knockouts between September 2019 and February 2021, Salgado returned to the ring in October 2021 to defeat Ricardo Banuelos Cernas by unanimous decision before most recently fighting Bryant Perrella to a split-draw in his U.S. debut in April.

"Training camp has been great and I'm way ahead of schedule heading into this fight," said Salgado. "I know I'm facing a solid fighter who's a good counter puncher, but I'm preparing to counter that style. This is going to be a very interesting fight, because I'm training to deliver a knockout and win in tremendous fashion."

Owning a top-10 ranking at 122-pounds from multiple sanctioning bodies, Aleem (19-0, 12 KOs) put on the most impressive performance of his career in January 2021 to capture the interim WBA title. Aleem dominated in a battle of unbeatens, dropping Victor Pasillas four times before eventually stopping him in round 11. Raised in Michigan and training out of Las Vegas, the 31-year-old Aleem had stopped his past seven opponents inside the distance before most recently earning a decision victory over Eduardo Baez in November 2021.

“The time is now to take that next step in my career toward a world title shot and I know that a win in this fight will put me on the right path,” said Aleem. “I’ve been waiting for the chance to show everyone why I’m the best super bantamweight in the world. I’m never in a boring fight and you can expect fireworks once again on September 4. I’m going to let my hands send a message to the rest of the division.”

The 25-year-old Plania (26-1, 13 KOs) dropped Joshua Greer twice in their June 2020 clash on his way to a career-best decision victory, which he followed up in April 2021 by defeating Emmanuel Mogawa, before stopping Ricardo Nunez in November. A native of General Santos City in the Philippines, Plania has put together an 11-fight winning streak since a 2018 decision loss against former champion Juan Carlos Payano. Plania has fought professionally since 2014, with five of his last six outings taking place stateside.

“Ever since I beat Joshua Greer to put myself in the world rankings, I have been looking for an opportunity to fight the best at 122 pounds and to secure a world title shot,” said Plania. “On September 4, I will show everyone I deserve to fight for the title. I want to thank my whole team for putting me in this position and I can’t wait to get in there and show what I can do.”

Charles Martin-Devin Vargas Added To Ruiz-Ortiz Undercard 9/4 In Los Angeles

Eight months after he nearly knocked out Luis Ortiz, Charles Martin will return to the ring on Ortiz’s undercard.

Boxing Scene has learned that the former IBF heavyweight champion has been added to the non-televised portion of the pay-per-view card that’ll feature Ortiz and Andy Ruiz Jr. in the main event September 4 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Martin (28-3-1, 25 KOs) is scheduled to face Devin Vargas (22-7, 9 KOs) in a 10-round fight designed to keep Martin busy while he pursues a bigger fight.

The 6-foot-5, 246-pound Martin, a strong southpaw from Carson, California, will fight for the first time since he dropped Ortiz twice in a fight that headlined a FOX Sports Pay-Per-View event January 1 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Ortiz overcame those two knockdowns – one apiece in the first and fourth rounds – and sent Martin to the canvas twice in the sixth round.

Referee Frank Santore Jr. stopped their scheduled 12-round fight at 1:36 of the sixth round, several seconds after Martin reached his feet from the second knockdown.

Though he lost, the 36-year-old Martin became just the second opponent to knock down Ortiz in the Cuban southpaw’s 12-year pro career.

Deontay Wilder was the only fighter to have previously floored Ortiz – three times in their first fight and once in their rematch. Wilder won both of those WBC championship matches inside the distance – by 10th-round technical knockout in March 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and seventh-round knockout in November 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The 40-year-old Vargas, a 2004 U.S. Olympian from Toledo, Ohio, will fight for the first time since Chinese contender Zhang Zhilei (24-1-1, 19 KOs) knocked him out in the fourth round of their November 2020 bout at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

The 12-round battle between Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs), a former IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO champion from Imperial, California, and Miami’s Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs, 2 NC) will headline another FOX Sports Pay-Per-View show a week from Sunday night. Most sportsbooks list Ruiz as a 3-1 favorite over Ortiz.

Jezreel Corrales (VIsa) Out, Jose Valenzuela To Face Edwin De Los Santos On Ruiz-Ortiz Pay-Per-View

Jose Valenzuela was prepared to face a former titleholder for the second straight time.

He now faces a rising prospect who is arguably an upgrade in competition.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Jezreel Corrales has been pulled from his bout with Valenzuela this Sunday after being unable to secure a travel visa from Panama in time to fight. Corrales is replaced by Dominican Republic’s Edwin De Los Santos, who—according to Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) representatives—has been on standby for the past two weeks in anticipation of the development.

Boxing podcaster Broadway Joel—best known as The Voice of Dominican Boxing—was the first to report the development.

De Los Santos (14-1, 13KOs) steps well up in class and in a year where he suffered his lone career defeat. It came in an eight-round split decision to William Foster III on a January 7 ShoBox card in Orlando, Florida. The 22-year-old Dominican southpaw quickly rebounded, blasting out unbeaten Luis Acosta in the second round of a fight that also aired on Showtime’s ShoBox series on March 11 in Deadwood, South Dakota.

The switch leaves Valenzuela to at least face another southpaw, though it is where the similarities end between De Los Santos and Corrales (26-4, 10KOs). De Los Santos boasts a far more fan friendly style, while the 31-year-old Corrales—a former WBA junior lightweight titlist—isn’t shy about slowing down the pace of a fight to a crawl.

It is also easily argued that Corrales is past his best days, which would have produced the threat of providing more of the same for Valenzuela following his latest win. ‘El Rayo’—a training stablemate of unbeaten former two-time super middleweight titlist David Benavidez—is coming off a first-round knockout of badly faded former WBC 130-pound titlist Francisco ‘Bandido’ Vargas on an April 16 Showtime PPV event in Arlington, Texas.

The piece-meal ten-round lightweight contest will open a four-fight Fox Sports Pay-Per-View telecast from Crypto.com Arena. Headlining the show, former unified titlist Andy Ruiz (34-2, 22KOs) faces former two-time title challenger Luis Ortiz (33-2, 28KOs; 2NC) in a scheduled 12-round WBC semifinal title eliminator.

That's what we thought with Martin, and he was having his way with Father Time, until he wasn't.
We could see a repeat of that, if Andy takes his foot off the gas too early. Just depends if Ruiz trained properly this time.
