Man He was one of my heroes. I loved watching him in his glory days.
I was very lucky to have met him on a couple of occasions and he was one of the
nicest down to earth guys you could ever meet.
We lost a legend.

At the last Vegas Boxing Expo (2019) Mr. Shavers was very generous with his time when you stopped by his booth for a visit. He gave away many signed shirts. His hand shake was like a vise grip. Was looking forward to seeing him again at the upcoming Expo Sept 17. RIP Mr. Shavers.

He did door work in Liverpool and the Wirral for about 10 years. Still find it a bizarre thing to this day. Saw him loads of times, he never had much trouble unsurprisingly.

Some tributes:

Boxing analyst Al Bernstein stated: “So sad to hear of the passing of Earnie Shavers. Not only was he a terrific boxer, but he was also a terrific guy.

“I met him when I did a feature on him for Boxing Illustrated in 1978. Known him ever since, and every moment around him was good. He’ll be missed.”

-------
Long-time promoter J. Russell Peltz added: “Earnie Shavers KO’d Jimmy Young in three rounds on my card in February 1973, at The Spectrum.

“Every time I ran into him over the years, he had a smile and handshake for me. He gave me a thumbs-up.

“Tuesday, then I wished him a happy birthday on Facebook. Now he’s gone, and we’ll all miss him.”

-------
Foreman discussed his experience with the hardest hitters: “1 Joe Louis, 2 Ernie Shavers. The others hit me: Ali, Liston, Frazier, and Lyle.”

“I didn’t get a taste of Ernie Shavers punch. But Lyle gave me a taste of “Space Travel.” Afterward, I could have become a consultant for NASA,”
he joked.

Ernie Shavers, working in Liverpool?

This is posssiby the strangest thing about his remarkable career.

I bet you had to shake your head in disbelief a few times.

One of my friends has a photograph of himself shaking hands with Ali from the early 1980s, in Birmingham I think.

I can now always pride myself as having shook the hand that shook the hand.

I can't think of words to write. Your words echo my sentiments. When my high school teachers were trying to teach me things, I was thinking about Earnie Shavers. :verysad:
