Julio Cesar Martinez and McWilliams Arroyo will put aside their title consolidation bout to instead allow for the first flyweight unification bout in nearly a decade.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that terms were reached between Martinez and Arroyo that will see the two enter separate fights in lieu of an ordered WBC flyweight title fight rematch. The development allowed Martinez (18-2, 14KOs; 2NC) to instead pursue a title unification bout with unbeaten IBF flyweight champ Sunny Edwards (18-0, 4KOs), which will take place October 22 at a North America location to be determined.

The bout will mark the first flyweight unification bout since Brian Viloria knocked out Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez in the tenth round of their November 2012 slugfest to retain his WBO title and win the WBA belt that night. Arroyo's consolation prize for allowing the fight to happen is a planned co-feature slot, in a dangerous interim WBC flyweight title defense against Mexico's Joselito Velasquez in a battle of Olympians and current flyweight contenders. The deal reached between Martinez and Arroyo helped avoid a purse bid hearing that loomed ahead after their fight was re-ordered in late June.

Sunny Edwards Wants Martinez, Jesse Rodriguez and Then Nakatani

Sunny Edwards is focused on securing a three-fight global tour which starts in Mexico later this year and ends on a “massive” night in Japan.

The IBF flyweight champion is hoping to land a unification clash with WBC titleholder Julio Cesar Martinez and ‘Showtime’ is happy to travel his rival’s backyard for the fight.

Edwards says he will then target a London homecoming against Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, who has already indicated he is prepared to drop down to 112lb to face him, before challenging WBO king Junto Nakatani on a special night in the Japanese boxing calendar.

“Fighting Nakatani is the progressive step on from getting a big name on this side of the world, beating Martinez and maybe beating Rodriguez and then taking that over to Japan and looking to do a crazy, big event over there on New Year’s,” Edwards said, as he co-hosted the Fight Disciples podcast.

“That’s always been on my bucket list in boxing, my birthday is January 1, and it has always been a dream of mine to do that, ever since I found out that is a massive night in Japan.

“For me that’s the progression, that’s how I’d want it. Martinez, beat him in Mexico, then a homecoming with Bam Rodriguez, selling out the O2, and then fly over to Japan for New Year’s to round it all off. That is how I put myself in the pound-for-pound list, that is the kind of route I’ve got to take.”

Edwards has long chased a unification clash with Martinez and is confident the fight can now be made.

“Both sides are agreed, both sides want it, both sides are chasing the fight and it is the biggest fight in the division, it’s the best fight in the division,” Edwards added.

“It’s the best fight at flyweight in the past 10 years. It’s a big fight in the calendar of boxing. It’s going to capture the imagination. Just give me a 20ft ring, it doesn’t matter where we have it.”
