TROY WILLIAMSON-JOSH KELLY SET FOR DECEMBER 2 IN NEWCASTLE

It’s title time on the Tyne, with the epic North-East battle for the British Super Welterweight Championship confirmed between Darlington’s Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) and Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs) at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle on Friday December 2, live on Channel 5.

Kelly expressed his desire to compete for Williamson’s Lonsdale belt as the two came face-to-face in July after ‘PBK’ beat Lucas Bastida to claim the WBO International Super Welterweight Title on July 30 at Newcastle’s Vertu Arena.

With the champion equally keen to get the fight on, Williamson since added a win of his own to his undefeated record as he stopped David Benitez in the sixth round on September 17 at the University of Bolton Stadium live on Channel 5.

“We’re two fighters flying the flag for the North East, but only one of us holds that British title,” said Williamson. “Every fight is going to be a tough fight at this level, especially when belts are on the line.

“I’m the champ, I’m undefeated, and I don’t think there’s anything he can throw at me that’ll stop my reign as Super Welterweight king as I move on to bigger and better things. One thing is for sure, and that’s fireworks.”

“This is set to be one of the North-East’s biggest fights in recent memory, and you can see exactly why,” said Kelly.

“Troy is British Champion for a reason and he’s obviously a good fighter. However, he’s just another obstacle in the way of me achieving what I’m destined to achieve, and he’ll be taken care of on December 2.”

After producing a stoppage win over Ted Cheeseman to become the British Champion in October of last year, Williamson has since defended his title against Mason Cartwright to set up this hugely anticipated clash against Kelly.

“The last time we ventured to the North-East, the people clearly showed their passion and love for boxing,” said Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland.

“This time it is on another level as we bring one of the most hotly anticipated domestic dust-ups available. Two of the North-East’s own battling it out to boast the title of Britain’s best. Newcastle is about to host one of its biggest nights in the sport, and I cannot wait to be in the arena for an electric atmosphere come fight night.”

Williamson vs Kelly for the British Super Welterweight Championship tops a huge night of boxing in the North-East on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle with more major fights to be announced soon. Promoted by Wasserman Boxing in association with William Hill and Infinitum Entertainment, all the action will be shown live and free on Channel 5.

----------------------------
Purse bids are on 10th September.

Both have embraced the fight.

Let’s hope it gets done.

Really like the match up.

I've never really liked Kelly, just rubs ne up the wrong way. Probably just the showboating in earlier fights, against opponents well below his level.
I actually thought he would be the one to end Ava's run, but he was eventually broken up in an absolute war.

Kelly has the "look" of a superstar, but isn't.

Nevertheless, he's still a fine boxer with talent & ability and I would love to see him fight Williamson for the British title. It's an excellent match and worthy of the Lonsdale belt, as opposed to some spurious intercontinental title shite.

I’ve never really been a fan of Kelly. I was completely turned off by his showboating against the kid on the AJ - Ruiz NY card.

I forget his name, but I ended up hoping he would twat Kelly, before Josh escaped with the robbery.

I will give him respect if he takes this fight though, as I can only see Trojan Williamson grinding him down & KOing him.

He was called Ray Robinson.

Surprised we haven’t seen more of him.

Troy has heart and is fit but he was on the ropes vs Cheesey and arguably lost against Cartwright and was nearly stopped early on.

If Kelly’s fitness holds up I think he stops Troy late.

Cracking match for the British ! :box:

We (more or less) all picking Troy by KO for obvious reasons, but Kelly is a serious talent capable of beating anyone (big, massive) IF he can put all together on the night.

I'm guessing The Trojan watches the gameplan scene in "The Fighter" then Josh vs Ava three times.
Get humiliated for a few rounds then come and strong and watch "The Pretty Boy" fall apart.
Real "trade fight" we'll all be up for. :bag:

Kelly will probably box Williamson's ears off for the first half, but will he hold up down the stretch :maybe:

Williamson showed good durability against Cheeseman and kept his power late. That has to be a worry for Kelly's team.

agreed that's the way I'd be looking at the odds. Kelly may be less drained at 154 but i think his style will always make it tough for him late, if he doesn't cut down on all the bouncing around the ring

It should be a an excellent fight.

What actually impressed me most about Kelly in his defeat to Avanesyan, was that he didn't cower or start spoiling when the screw got turned. He kept trying to assert himself on Avanesyan even though he ended up getting a shellacking.

I liked the fact he still believed in his own hype enough to stay with it until he lost, rather than bail when things were clearly going awry.

Having read Josh's mental health issues in BN, he may beat himself up before this fight if it happens.
Being a name he knows another lose will really end the prospect (it shouldn't) , and he seems to struggle with the pressures and build up in the pro game.
When your amateur you have competitions but don't have as long thinking about your opponent

Kelly just doesnt seem to have the power to finish people. Looks like he should, seems to stun or hurt opponents but cant sustain it and finish them. Lands clean hooks, often doubling up but cant put put ppl down with them.

Got to think williamson starts getting to him in the later rounds.

Yeah, that was a good read.
I hope he can "snap out of it" but looks unlikely. I wonder if he's tried sports psychs, hypnotists etc.

Don't see Kelly as a 12 round fighter.

I dunno if you can change a fighter with more intensive training regimes

Kelly has it all to prove and Williamson is the litmus test.

One thing to remember, losing to Avanesyan doesn't make you a poor boxer...I'd put money on Avanesyan doing the same to Williamson too.
