Golovkin: "Let’s Face It, I'm 40 Years Old and Nearing My Retirement"

“I’m going to retire soon anyway. With his help or without his help. Let’s face it, I’m 40 years old and nearing my retirement,” Golovkin told The Sun.

"We had very good sparring sessions back then. Those were exciting spars to watch," Golovkin explained.

DAZN announces “The Making Of” series with Canelo Alvarez ahead of third Golovkin fight

Canelo Alvarez will feature on DAZN’s “The Making Of” in September.

DAZN’s “The Making Of” series will feature Canelo Alvarez in a three-episode run starting in early September, just ahead of his third fight with Gennadiy Golovkin on DAZN pay-per-view on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Cancelled sub to Dazn when they announced going down ppv route. I'll catch this on YouTube when it's available, whether it's one week or one month after broadcast.
The sub was basically half ppv a month for largely humdrum shows, with some exceptions.
They were clearly banking on champions league and when that didnt happen they seemed to give up.

Not buying the hype for Benn v eubank either.

Yep not heard a peep about it anywhere. It speaks volumes that even on here we only have a 3 page long thread as we enter fight week.

I think the lack of interest here is mainly down to the DAZN factor but also the fact that people don’t wanna see the once imperious but now badly faded GGG take a beating. Their first fight was probably at least a year too late and that was 5 years ago now - this one really shouldn’t be happening.

I would "like" to think that a reason for the lack of coverage / interest in the UK is because 1) GGG is over the hill and 2) (an important for me) Canelo lost his last fight pretty clearly. Whilst I am not a supporter of having a "zero" on the record being the be all and end all - I am fed up of promoters kind of ignoring losses or thinking a loss has not impacted on star power at all.

Anthony Joshua being the other case in point. If he fights Fury and loses - you watch his April tune up still being on PPV and him still being considered the #1 box office attraction in boxing. Canelo losing to Bivol has had NO impact on his career and his purse strings - he is still fighting the guy he was always going to fight and for the same money.

When Tyson lost to Douglas - his comeback was against much lesser opponents and alot smaller fights than had he beaten Douglas. Thats how it should be.

Pacquiao was in a better place than Morales. For my money, despite coming off a loss, Canelo is in a better place than GGG. The Mexican star is younger, bigger and faster. I think Canelo gets a late stoppage after punishing his rival throughout.”

“They’ve shared 24 rounds together and in some people’s eyes Golovkin is 2-0, not 0-1-1. I personally felt Golovkin deserved the nod in the first fight, but the second was very close and could have been a draw. However, the second fight was four years ago. I still feel it will take a heck of a fighter to beat GGG, but he’s 40, past his athletic peak and he’s facing a younger, better version of Canelo this time. “These two have already been in two very close fights, so skill-wise, they are pretty evenly matched. However, GGG is now 40 years old and has only fought once since 2020. Canelo is coming off a loss to Bivol, so we don’t know how or if that will affect him mentally. But he has lost before, to Mayweather, and bounced right back. I am going to assume that Canelo has the capacity to deal with that. The Bivol fight was pretty punishing for Canelo, but he is only 32, and this will be his fifth fight since 2020. The combination of GGG’s advanced age and relative lack of activity gives Canelo a big edge in my estimation. And the fight will take place in Las Vegas, where the judges are always kind to Canelo. Also, a very vocal crowd will be on his side. It is true that Bivol outpointed Canelo in Las Vegas in May, but Bivol clearly outboxed and outclassed him in nearly every round, only to win by a mere two points. I am going to assume that the judges in Las Vegas still love Canelo. All of the intangibles point in Alvarez’ direction. I don’t believe that either of these guys can stop the other. In a close fight, I have to go with Canelo by decision.”

“Without doubt and unsurprisingly, there are cracks appearing in Golovkin’s game; he’s appeared uncomfortable at times lately against opponents he would have completely dominated previously. The pace of a Canelo fight will help GGG navigate those moments perhaps and while I was really impressed with Canelo learning and adapting between their first two fights, it might be close again. I do think that if Canelo went after GGG, he might stop him late on but that would require an entirely different and more aggressive version of the Mexican. Canelo may have suffered his second defeat to the brilliant Dmitri Bivol, who moved and boxed beautifully in May this year, but that style of box/fighting is not something Golovkin can do. What’s more, Alvarez has got GGG to step up to 168 pounds – not even a catchweight of 165. Saul has all the advantages in this fight, just the way he likes it. I see a commanding points decision win for the Mexican or quite possibly a late stoppage.”

I’m not sure what you’d expect promotion wise for this in the U.K. There’s been nothing outside of social and YouTube but in fairness there’s now loads about it.

I do wonder how much promotion there’s been in the US. Previously they would have had HBO pushing it heavily on HBO in the days and weeks leading up to it. Obviously there was more demand to see the fight then than now after GGG has been on the shelf and Canelo recently losing but I’m surprised they’ve seemingly got 1,000 or so tickets left (expensive bottom tier tickets) - I’d be amazed if they had tickets left in fight week previously. I’m sure it’ll still sell out and do well but I can’t see it doing 700k+ buys in the US.
