Tszyu-Charlo Jan 28 in Las Vegas?

Looks like WBO #1 super welterweight Tim Tszyu will challenge undisputed WBO, WBC, WBA, IBF champion Jermell Charlo on January 28 in Las Vegas. Tha date is 27 years to the day when Tim’s famous Hall of Fame father Kostya Tszyu challenged Jake Rodriguez for the IBF super lightweight title in the same city.

“I can’t even describe it,” Tszyu told reporters on Thursday. “I’m fighting for all the belts in Las Vegas. It’s a dream come true. I’ll be basing my camp there. I’ll be there for two months. This is the biggest fight of my career. This is the biggest fight for anyone. This is the pinnacle of the sport, this is the pinnacle of all sports in general. All four belts. This is as big as it gets!”

Tim’s message for Charlo? “Don’t underestimate me. Stop being a grumpy old man. I’m coming for you.”

Mell should handle Timmy. Only if Mell is drained and too weared from making 154, I could see Timmy beating him.

Jermell Charlo to fight Australian star Tim Tszyu in 154-pound title bout

Jermell Charlo will defend his undisputed junior middleweight championship against Tim Tszyu on Jan. 28, the challenger announced Tuesday on Instagram.

The fight for all four 154-pound titles will take place in the United States, sources told ESPN.

PBC, which is handling the event, owns network deals with Showtime and Fox.

Charlo, who fights out of the Houston area, cemented his place atop the 154-pound division when he knocked out Brian Castano in the 10th round of a May rematch. When they met in July 2021, they fought to a controversial draw.

Now, Charlo will move on to Tszyu, who was ringside in the Los Angeles area for the KO of Castano.

"Different heat in America," Charlo, 32, said at the postfight news conference. "... How much money he got? F--- Tim."

The son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu, Tim is already a star in Australia. He made his U.S. debut in March when he survived a first-round knockdown to outpoint Olympian Terrell Gausha.

Against Charlo, Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) will be taking another leap in class and will be installed as the underdog for the first time. The pressure fighter, who is rated No. 3 by ESPN at 154 pounds, has never competed against a top-10 boxer. Charlo, of course, is one of the best fighters in the world regardless of weight.

"Two years already I've been mandatory for the WBO title, so I think it's about time," Tszyu told ESPN before Charlo and Castano entered the ring. "... I prefer the Charlo fight, stylistically I think it makes more sense for myself. Just a better fight, bigger buzz -- that's what boxing's all about. I wanna bring a big, big fight [to Australia] after I win something big."

Tszyu will get his wish now in his first title shot as he attempts to live up to the legacy of his father.

Dude... such a weird statement. Crawford isn't at 154 and hasn't even said he'll move up, if ever. How can Charlo he afraid of a guy that hasn't even been fighting above WW?

Crawford called out the fellow and the fellow stated in clearly that he didn't want that fight. Saying no to the biggest fight of his career vs a guy from a lighter weight class. This is well documented.

Tim Tszyu plans to knockout Jermell Charlo before moving all the way up to heavyweight

Junior middleweight contender Tim ‘The Soul Taker’ Tszyu 21-0 (15) is planning to take out WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF 154-pound champion Jermell ‘Iron Man’ Charlo 35-1-1 (19) within the distance.

The 27-year-old Australian, who is the WBO mandatory challenger, is expected to face Charlo in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 28.

“I don’t want this fight going the distance. I plan on knocking him out before the twelfth round. This is no bullshit man, you get this opportunity once in a lifetime. You can win world titles in divisions, but to be undisputed in the four-belt era, it doesn’t happen often, it’s only happened seven times in boxing history,” Tszyu said to WA Today.

“This is the Super Bowl of the NFL, the NBA play-offs, the last winning shot, a buzzer beater. This is the World Cup grand final. This is not just the biggest moment in boxing but in sports. It’s massive, it doesn’t get better.”

Tszyu is the son of former WBC, WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu, who dominated the 140-pound weight class in the late 1990s nd early 2000s. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.

“Back then there wasn’t a four-belt era, he did it in the three-belt era,” Tszyu said of his father.

But Tszyu’s plans don’t end there. He sees himself moving up in weight and becoming a multi-divisional champion, even going up to heavyweight. It’s an ambitious idea from a boxer who stands half an inch shy of 5-foot-9, but one he believes he is capable of.

“There’s [Gennadiy] Golovkin in the weight division above, [Saul] Canelo Alvarez in the weight division after that. We can then go up to heavyweight if we have to,” Tszyu told The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.

“It’s no joke. Roy Jones went from middleweight to heavyweight; super welterweight to heavyweight hasn’t been done.

“That’s my all-time goal… That’s 10 years in the making.”

Tszyu has made it clear since the beginning of his pro career that he is chasing big fights and that he doesn’t care at what weight they take place.

“My first goal is, of course, the undisputed [title], that’s all I’m looking for. But after that, my mind is going to take me elsewhere. Even to the heavyweights,” he said.

“I’ll fight [two-time former unified world heavyweight champion] Anthony Joshua. I’ll smack Joshua with a few body shots, let’s see how he reacts to that.”

Tim Tszyu on Facing Jermell Charlo: This is The Superbowl, The Grand Final

The countdown to UNDISPUTED has officially begun. Australian boxing superstar Tim Tszyu will fight for the undisputed super-welterweight championship of the world.

Tszyu will face the undisputed champion at 154-lbs (70kg), 32-year-old Jermell Charlo, for all the belts (WBO, WBC, IBF & WBA) on January 28 of 2023 (January 29 in Australia).

The fight will be live and exclusive Foxtel’s Main Event and Kayo Sports and is expected to be one of the most watched title fights of all time in Australia.

Charlo is ranked in the top 10 pound-for-pound list, was the seventh man to become the undisputed champion in the four-belt era and the first male to do so in the super welterweight division.

The fight also coincides with the 28th anniversary of Tszyu’s hall of fame father, Kostya, making his Vegas debut against Jake Rodriguez in 1995 to win the IBF light welterweight title.

Tszyu recently spoke to the media, alongside his uncle and trainer Igor Goloubev, brother and rising prospect Nikita Tszyu, manager Glen Jennings and No Limit CEO George Rose.

Tszyu said: “This is the Superbowl, the Grand Final. This is the clutch shot of a NBA finals, this is equivalent to that.

“The 28th of January as many people know is the day that dad (Kostya) beat Jake Rodriguez for the first world title in Vegas. It was the start of his career and it’s pretty crazy, like a deja vu type feeling, that it’s happening the second way around on the exact same date in the exact same location 28 years apart. It’s pretty insane. It was a total domination, he completely annihilated Jake Rodriguez and cemented himself as the best super lightweight on the planet at the time.

“My birthday is on the second of November, so it’s coming up and mum asked what are you going to do and I said I don’t want to do nothing. She was like the funny thing is, when dad was prepping for his first world title, he said the exact same thing. All in, no ‘Plan B’, just all in.

“For me and Igor, we need to disappear, get into the jungle (in Thailand) and go back to the basics, the old school training methods. That’s what got us to this position and just to isolate and be away from all distractions. Be away from everything and focus on what’s ahead, because what’s ahead is going to be one hell of a ride.”

No Limit CEO George Rose said: “The son of a hall of fame legend, fighting on the exact same date 28 years on from his father winning the first of many world titles in Las Vegas. It’s absolutely incredible.”

“It’s a really exciting time for us as well here at No Limit Boxing and it’s been a hell of a journey to get to here. Knowing that we are now in a position to provide fighters the ability to fight overseas, to be doing a co-promotion with PBC who have been absolutely fantastic is amazing and the countdown in now on until Tim becomes undisputed champion of the world.”

Liam Wilson-Archie Sharp Lightweight Fight To Land On Charlo-Tszyu Undercard

The void left behind by Shakur Stevenson at junior lightweight has resulted in at least two significant fights secured to help reshape the title picture.

Matt Rose of No Limit Boxing has confirmed a deal in place between Australia’s Liam Wilson and England’s Archie Sharp to meet. The fight will take place on the undercard of the Jermell Charlo-Tim Tszyu undisputed junior middleweight championship clash on January 28 in Las Vegas, likely at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

No Limit Boxing represents both Wilson and Tszyu.

A push was made for the Sharp-Wilson bout to come with the vacant WBO junior lightweight title at stake, which became available along with the WBC belt when Stevenson (19-0, 9 KOs) missed weight ahead of his September 23 win over Robson Conceicao. Sharp—who fights for Probellum—is the current number-one contender, while Wilson is number four.

However, that status has changed as it was confirmed that reigning WBO featherweight titlist Emanuel Navarrete plans to campaign at junior lightweight for his next fight and has first rights to challenge for the vacant title as a recognized ‘Super’ champion. It has been widely reported that Navarrete (36-1, 30 KOs) will next face former two-division titlist Oscar Valdez for the WBO 130-pound title, targeted for February 3 at a location to be determined.

The WBO is currently considering a proposal by No Limit Boxing for Sharp-Wilson to serve as a final eliminator and with a guarantee to face the winner of the proposed Navarrete-Valdez title fight.

Wilson (11-1, 5 KOs) has won his last two starts, including a revenge-fueled second-round knockout of Joe Noynay in March to avenge a stunning fifth-round stoppage defeat last July. In his most recent start, Wilson—a 26-year-old contender from Caboolture, Queensland, Australia—earned a ten-round, unanimous decision win over Matias Rueda on June 29 in Brisbane.

Sharp (22-0, 9 KOs) has steadily advanced in the WBO 130-pound rankings, taking aim at then-titlists Jamel Herring and Stevenson (19-0, 9 KOs) during his rise to contention. The 27-year-old Londoner has wisely fought in WBO-sanctioned regional title fights since 2018 to aid his cause.

Most recently, Sharp outpointed Alex Rat over ten rounds on June 18 in Leeds, England.

The fight will represent the first in the U.S. for both Sharp and Wilson, both of whom have fought exclusively in their respective home countries.

Tim Tszyu: I Might Go After Jermall Charlo Later On, Jermell is The Sh!ttier Version!

Undefeated junior middleweight star Tim Tszyu is mulling the possibility of facing both Charlo brothers.

Tszyu is on track to face Jermell Charlo, who is the reigning undisputed world champion at junior middleweight with the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles around his waist.

Their mandatory fight is scheduled to land on January 28 in Las Vegas.

At some point, Tszyu is planning to move up to the middleweight limit of 160 - where twin brother Jermall Charlo is the WBC world champion.

“I might get his big brother later on,” Tszyu told the Sun-Herald. “There’s one official Charlo [Jermall] and he [Jermell] calls himself the ‘Twin Charlo’. He’s the sh!tter version.

“He’s achieved more than his brother by winning the undisputed, but it’s a bit of a concern when you put yourself as the twin. They are both the same, they have the same characteristics. One is a little bit bigger, that’s it. We’ll see. Right now I’m focused solely on the younger one.”

Regarding the possible scenario of being the man to unseat both Charlos, Tszyu stated - “That would be cool man, that would be pretty cool. One night. Why not?”

Tszyu’s manager, Glen Jennings, said the possibility of his boxer facing both Charlo brothers was not out of the question.

“He can go twice,” Jennings said. “We would be a mug of a team if we didn’t chat about future stuff like that as well. We’re really excited for whatever the future brings and wherever we end up landing. We briefly glanced at that. You can see that at 27, Tim is getting bigger, more mature.

“He’s going to keep growing. The logical choice at some stage - and yes, we’d like to do a few defenses, maybe one here and one over there - but middleweights are the next attraction. The middleweights are a great class and that’s another challenge. Whilst we breezed over [Jermall Charlo] in discussions, it doesn’t change the fact that we’ve got a job with little Charlo yet.”

Tim Tszyu Wants To Secure Terrell Gausha To Prepare For Jermell Charlo

“If I get Terrell for sparring, that would be incredible,” Tszyu told The Herald. “He’s got great defense, great experience, great timing. He’s aware of all the punches and has great skill. I think Brian Castano used him for his Charlo fight, so that would be perfect.

“I was cold and careless [at the start of the fight], but got to show my level of skill. I put on a show against a really good fighter and dominated. Terrell is right up there, skill-wise. For someone to be in the American national team and an Olympian, that speaks a lot about where his skill is at.

“The pro game is a bit different, there’s politics and money and that stuff involved, whereas amateurs are based on who is the more skillful fighter. At one stage he was the best in America.”

Tszyu has a lot of respect for Gausha.

“Money talks, especially in this industry, the entertainment industry,” Tszyu said.

“If you’re not able to generate it, they just brush you off. In this sport it’s not sometimes who is the best boxer, that’s the craziest part about it. He said I was his toughest opponent. And he has fought Lara and Lubin.”

Press Release

Undisputed Super Welterweight World Champion Jermell Charlo will defend his four titles against unbeaten No. 1 contender and aggressive puncher Tim Tszyu live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, January 28 from Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in a Premier Boxing Champions Event.

One of the most anticipated matches of 2023, Charlo vs. Tszyu pairs two hard-hitting boxer-punchers in a high-stakes bout with Tszyu attempting to dethrone the best 154-pounder in the sport. Charlo earned his position as undisputed champion by stopping Brian Castaño in May and unifying all four titles. He will look to add another big name to his pound-for-pound resume against the Australian star Tszyu, who hopes to join his father Kostya Tszyu as an undisputed world champion.

“This marks Jermell’s 16th appearance on SHOWTIME, and it’s been a privilege watching him develop into the consensus No. 1 fighter in the division and one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the sport,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.

“Stylistically, Charlo vs. Tszyu is one of the most attractive fights that can be made in boxing, given Jermell and Tim’s aggressive temperaments in the ring. Kudos to them both, and everyone involved, for putting this fight on SHOWTIME. After hosting Tim’s U.S. debut in March, we’re thrilled to see him challenge Jermell and dare to be great like his father Kostya, who fought on the network 10 times. Both Jermell and Tim have never shied away from a challenge, and this stacks up to be a real Fight of the Year type match-up.”

Pre-sale tickets will be available Monday, December 12 from 10 a.m. PT to 10 p.m. PT through AXS.com with the code: BOXING

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions, in association with No Limit Boxing, go on sale Tuesday, December 13 at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased through AXS.com.

“The super welterweight division has delivered memorable fight after memorable fight in recent years, and the division’s king, Jermell Charlo, will be back to defend his crown and add another chapter to that history on January 28 in Las Vegas,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “This is a battle of contrasting styles as Jermell Charlo brings his special blend of power and sublime ring skills against unbeaten Tim Tszyu, who will bring an aggressive style and championship pedigree into a matchup boxing fans around the world are looking forward to. Make sure you’re at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas or watching live on SHOWTIME, because this is a fight you won’t want to miss.”

Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) propelled himself to undisputed champion by fighting and beating the best in the division including Castaño, Jeison Rosario, Tony Harrison, Austin Trout and Erickson Lubin. The 32-year-old from Houston won his first title with a stunning knockout of John Jackson for the vacant WBC championship in 2016 and successfully defended the title three times, knocking out Charles Hatley and Lubin, and scoring a unanimous decision over Trout. He suffered his first loss via unanimous decision to Harrison on a card that he shared with his twin brother, WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo, in 2018.

After rebounding with a KO victory over Jorge Cota, Charlo stepped into the rematch with Harrison and avenged the loss in resounding fashion with a knockout victory in round 11. He then challenged WBA/IBF champion Jeison Rosario in an electrifying unification bout and made a statement with an eighth-round knockout in 2020. With the undisputed championship on the line, Charlo faced Castaño and fought to an exciting draw before once again prevailing in a rematch with a 10th-round stoppage. Charlo will ride that victory and a groundswell of confidence into his match against the unbeaten Tszyu.

The 28-year-old Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) has quickly climbed the rankings in the 154-pound division with an all-action, aggressive style. The notable names on his resume include former welterweight champion Jeff Horn, whom Tszyu stopped in round eight, and Terrell Gausha, a top contender and member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. A native of Sydney, Australia, Tszyu made his U.S. and SHOWTIME debut against Gausha and showed his poise and toughness by rallying back from a first-round knockdown to defeat Gausha via unanimous decision.

Tszyu grew up playing soccer, but soon gravitated toward boxing. The decision led to him following in the legendary footsteps of his father, Kostya, who was an undisputed 140-pound champion and who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011. The match against Charlo will represent an opportunity for Tszyu to blaze his own trail in boxing, joining his father in the club of undisputed world champions.
