Hearn: Sometimes We Don't Get Credit For Our Fights; We Are Putting On the Biggest Nights

Eddie Hearn feels that his promotional company — and the fights that they create with their key broadcasting partner — does not get the recognition it deserves.

Hearn, the head of Matchroom Boxing, recently expressed some annoyance at what he feels is a lack of recognition from fans and industry peers toward the fight schedule that his company has created for DAZN, the streaming platform with which Matchroom has an extensive content deal.

The British promoter pointed to several fights that had just taken place and several in the future as evidence of what he believes is the best boxing schedule in the sport. Past highlights includes the recent heavyweight unification rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk, the light heavyweight title bout between Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol in May, and the women’s lightweight undisputed bout between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.

As for upcoming fights, Hearn mentioned several that he was especially keen on, including the trilogy bout between Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin, the British catchweight fight between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr., the postponed featherweight title bout between Leigh Wood and Mauricio Lara, the light heavyweight title bout between Bivol and Gilberto Ramirez, and the recently announced flyweight trilogy bout between Roman Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada.

“I feel like because of what we do, and because of the schedule that DAZN has put together, it’s like, sometimes, we don’t get credit for the fights or the schedules,” Hearn said on The DAZN Boxing Show. “But when you actually break it down, coming off the back of AJ versus Usyk, Canelo against Triple G, Benn against Eubank, even Wood against Lara, Chocolatito against Estrada, Canelo-Bivol, Bivol against Ramirez, Katie Taylor against Serrano. Like, guys, c’mon, we are putting on the biggest nights and fights globally in the sport.”

Hearn said he and DAZN would like a little credit every now and again — but he isn’t holding his breath.

“You don’t really need the pat on the back but every now and again it’s nice—maybe that’s what happens when you pack up your bag and retire,” Hearn said. “It’s frustrating sometimes when I look at the schedule and who else is doing that? Who else is putting on those fights, those nights on, those fanfares globally, selling out arenas, the production.”

I think Top Rank put on the better matches in all..

The bigger fights yes, Matchroom take it.

PBC have a lot of good boxers in the same weight classes that don’t even fight each other and are hardly willing to let their guys go to another broadcaster or work with them at least.

Since leaving Sky he’s gone from being a very likeable promoter to becoming this bitter, smarmy, lying, greedy, needs recognition, bitter, slightly slimmer but more slimy unlikeable and lesser know quantity.

He took the risk with DAZN; it hasn’t paid off and when their 5 year deal is up he will either be another Mick Hennessy or retired.

Matchroom was always a very good business in that in that it made several million in profit each year (after wages and bonuses) that predominantly went to the Hearn family.

That’s stepped up a level in the last handful of years and they’ve made c.£20m a year. Eddie’s now In charge of the group and there was recent
rumours of them selling a minority interest of the company that would value Matchroom at £600m. Bear in mind this is still a family business. That’s crazy money really.

Barry has always had money but in the last 5 years it’s stepped up a notch.

He would be wrong. They're not seeing it in the first place to get into it. The whole country was talking about Froch Groves 2. Eubank Benn isn't getting a mention.

It sold out quickly and has been the only fight, other than Khan/Brook, that my casual fan mates have wanted tickets for. Their head to head on Matchroom’s YouTube channel has done over a million views and we’re still near 3 weeks away. Compares to 150k viewers on the BT Boxing channel for Joyce/Parker. Eubank/Benn will be big news in fight week.

The shows, his stable, and the matchmaking was better pre DAZN.
Who does he have left with a major strap?
And he would like to count Canelo but we know that ain't the case.
For the major cash injection his company got after signing to DAZN, they sure haven't got value for money, and neither have the subscribers.

Sky is certainly the power house but Hearn did a terrific job pushing things too. Who’d have thought Froch would be fighting in front of 80,000 or Bellew would be a big name of British boxing just a few years before.

Eddie thought he’d bring more to DAZN than he has in the U.K. and likely underestimated the platform Sky had when pushing fights and fighters. Also I’m sure he was being told that DAZN would have other big sporting events added to the U.K. schedule which hasn’t happened either. allegedly showed how difficult it is to run a boxing only channel without losing money.

He talks about production.. which is good .. but I don’t watch boxing just be for that.

Had we gotten Canelo-GGG on regular £7.99 sub and the Benn-Eubank then fair enough..

But it’s obvious. Any decent fight now will be PPV.

We still don’t know the price for Benn-Eubank.

Canelo fights 2/3 times a year regardless of anyone else, and pretty much everyone gives them loads of credit for the job done with Joshua and the big stadium fights, which they do really well. Although in terms of heavyweights, the best fight in the last year involved Tyson Fury and the biggest event also involved Tyson Fury.

But for DAZN Uk, it was Dalton Smith who headlined their event last month, it's Maxi Hughes/Galahad this month, and it's Katie Taylor and Jordan Gill next month.
