kalule should be higher.

The idea keith holmes was a better fighter than him is criminal.

Good list overall though.

I love Hagler's style. The way he would switch stances with such ease. His fight with Mugabi showcased it perfectly.

David "Kui Kong" Young, rated by many as the greatest
boxer from Hawaii, should be ranked much higher.

He'll say they were all pitty pat fighters, where #1 and #3 had almost 100 KO's combined.

Any way on a serious note. This is my two pence...

Positive: Great to see moderns included like Calzaghe, Pacquiao, Winky, Vasquez, Casamayor, Judah, and feel they are all very accurately placed. Like the placing of YC III, Galaxy at 3, Tendler, Flowers, Elorde, Villaflor, Accavallo and Bettina i think they are fair.

Too Low: Ayub Kalule!! Lazslo Papp!! Kevin Kelley, Alan Minter, Herol Graham but not by much, Michael Moorer, Naseem Hamed, Vicente Saldivar, Jose Luis Ramirez, Duilio Loi, Whitaker should be 1 imo.

Too high: Marvin Hagler should be three four fiveish IMO, Pongsaklek wonjongkam, Antonio Tarver, Chris Byrd.

VERY god thread by the way thanks for your time and effort here. :D

Matty. Theone and others

To address your comments. No doubt, Whitaker is superior to Hagler in pure boxing skill, the big difference though, is the way Hagler just destroyed his opposition.

Ayub Kalule. Stopped by young Moore and young McCallum, biggest win probably SD against Kalambay. I'm not unchangeable though, and have seen him fight.

Lazslo Papp. Might have become a great fighter, but had just too few fights.

Kevin Kelley. More consideration required perhaps.

Alan Minter. Might have made the HOF he wasen't so prone to cuts. Read somewhere once, that before the Hagler fight, he had done well in all of his TKO losses.

I'll try to address the rest later. Thanks for the compliments though.

Hagler controlled one of boxing's most historic divisions for 7 years unscathed...he's fine where he is, 2 at the worst behind Pernell.

on second thought, 4 or 5 is a bit harsh, i think he belongs at number three. He did very well for himself yes, but imo he is not one of the two best left-handers of all boxing history.

as much as i love pacman...i wouldn't put him that high yet....i've only seen him fight about 3-4 world class fighters....and he lost one, and got a draw on the second one

I put PacMan at number 10 because he's won World titles at Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, and Super Featherweight, and KO'd 2 Mexican legends in Barrera in Morales.

I would certainly have Knockout Brown (Valentin Braun), Dal Hawkins, probably the first two southpaws to gain national recognition and popularity...especially Brown and I would definitely have George "KO" Chaney in the first 50! There seems to be a little bit of a shortage of earlier fighters in the list, but overall it's a pretty solid list.

Seamus,

Great list, of course!
But there are any great southpaws from Argentina who are with comfort between the Top 100: José Carattoli, Atilio Caraune and Eduardo Lausse

Great list Seamus. It looks like you put some thought into this. There are guys from different weight classes, eras and countries, and styles. You aren't ever going to find anyone who agrees with all your picks when you do a list like this; but theis certainly very good.
My biggest change would be Calzaghe at #16. Until he beats someone that is a lot better than anyone he has beaten so far, I can't see him being that high. however so far no one else has mentioned him so maybe you aren't that far off with him.
Good list. :TU:

Barry

I considered KO Chaney, but what finally dissuaded me from picking him was the fact that he fought alot of top fighters, but almost always lost to them. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Martin

Here's the problem I don't understand, Lausse would easily have been on the list, but Box Rec DOES NOT list him as a Southpaw. You also referred to Fighting Harada as a Southpaw in another thread. I'm a little confused.

Ambling Alp

I'm sure most of the Brits will agree with me, but I don't see Calzaghe's competition as being that bad, and when I've watched him, I always seem to see a guy with great handspeed who dominates against his opposition. Zero losses also helped me rank him high.

im with seamus. You dont always have to face the worlds most famous opponents at madison square garden for people to see how good you are. Even though he has not had many career defining fights, he has not lost any, and his record is far from bad. Even when against A- and B level fighters, you can see that Calzaghe is extremely good in the ring and is a great fighter.

Another point is why is Saldivar so low?. He was a genuine all-timer that fought terrific competition and beat almost all of them.

To have a hack like Coggi so high is not right either.

I'm not saying Saldivar wasen't a very good fighter, but fact is, he was past it by age 27, and only won 37 fights. Coggi on the other hand was very underrated fighter who like alot of Argentinians, didn't get alot of exposure in the USA. Besides that he won more than twice as many fights, while only losing two more.

Saldivar fought so many good fighters though like Famechon, Winstone and Sugar Ramos.

The trilogy with Winstone was the Barrera vs Morales of the '60s.

Saw lots of Coggi and he was an ordinary splinter champion that got perhaps the worst gift i have ever seen against Eder Gonzalez.

It's a good list overall Seamus.Obviously with such a large number of fighters there are always going to be disagreements.
