Hmmm. Perhaps Ben is no longer flavour of the month. I always thought Taylor shouldn’t have left Shane McGuigan.

Date In Limbo Mostly Due To Building Availability In UK

Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall still want to fight each other again.

Finalizing a date and a venue for their second 140-pound title fight has become problematic, though, which has left the Scottish southpaw and his English nemesis in limbo. Boxing Scene has learned that building availability in the United Kingdom, where their immediate rematch will take place, is the primary problem that has prevented their promoters, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. (Taylor) and BOXXER (Catterall), from finalizing an agreement and making an official announcement.

As BS.com reported late in July, the targeted date and venue for Taylor-Catterall II were November 26 at OVO Hydro in Glasgow, where their first fight took place. Promoters later began exploring venues in England, including AO Arena in Manchester, and since have moved off of the November 26 date.

It is possible, if a suitable venue cannot be secured for a December date, probably December 17, that the Taylor-Catterall rematch might not happen until early in 2023. In that scenario, nearly a year, perhaps even more than a year, will have elapsed from the time Taylor won a controversial split decision until their second meeting.

Regardless, Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) has pushed for a second chance to prove his superiority over Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs). Taylor could’ve chosen another opponent for his next fight, but he wants to atone for his subpar performance against Catterall, a fellow southpaw who was the WBO’s mandatory challenger for Taylor’s title.

Catterall, who is now ranked fifth by the WBO, knocked Taylor to the canvas in the eighth round and won on one scorecard when they fought February 26 at OVO Hydro in Glasgow.

Judges Ian-John Lewis (114-111) and Victor Loughlin (113-112) scored Taylor the winner of that bout, but judge Howard Foster scored it 113-112 for Catterall. Referee Marcus McDonnell also deducted a point from Catterall for holding, which accounted for the difference on Loughlin’s scorecard.

Without that point deduction, Loughlin would’ve scored their fight even, 113-113, and it would’ve resulted in a split draw.

Assuming their second fight happens, Prestonpans’ Taylor, 31, and Chorley’s Catterall, 29, will fight for only the WBO junior welterweight title. Their first fight was contested for the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO belts, but Taylor, who became boxing’s fully unified 140-pound champion when he out-pointed previously unbeaten Jose Ramirez in May 2021 at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, has since relinquished three of his four titles.

He may not have been with McNally that whole time though. He’d probably be ok for December but it seems there’s a real log jam of dates/shows planned from late November to the last weekend pre Christmas. Would be hard to get much promotion for this amongst fights for AJ/Fury (hopefully against each other), Whyte plus a world a cup.

Yeh, and January is usually a dead month for Boxing.

It will probably be Feb, which is a huge shame. Both have not stepped into the ring since their first fight.

It’s understandable, he’s got a global brand to run.

A rematch literally a year later..

No interims fights as it was being “negotiated” all year.. instead of all 4 belts, will just be the WBO..

At least they pay less sanctioning fees.

Josh Taylor: I Let Go of Three Titles To Make Catterall Rematch Happen

WBO junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor is mentally geared for a looming rematch with Jack Catterall.

Earlier this year, Taylor won a controversial twelve round decision over Catterall - when they collided for the undisputed junior welterweight championship.

A deal is nearly complete for the two boxers to collide in February of next year.

"It's in the hands of the lawyers just now. We're looking at finalizing and closing in on contracts and dates, so it's looking like that's going to be the fight next," Taylor told Sky Sports.

"It's been a long time coming, I would like to get that one nice and soon, but it's with the lawyers so I'm just waiting on everything getting back to me. I've done everything I can on my side, so we're just waiting on the other side, really."

When they met, Taylor had every major belt at 140-pounds.

As the mandatory obligations were piling up, Taylor was forced to vacate the IBF, WBA and WBC world titles - in order to stay on track with a fight against Catterall.

"At the end of the day, I'm the champion, I still did have all the belts. I've let go of three of them to make this fight happen. I think it will most likely be back in Scotland, we're not really sure on the timeline but it's looking like it's going to be next," Taylor said.

As the rematch becomes more of a reality, Taylor has parted ways with head trainer Ben Davison and recently hired Joe McNally.

"I'm excited for this new chapter in my career. It's a nice, new, refreshing start. I got to meet him a couple of months back, got talking to him and bounced ideas off him, and I liked the way his mind works, his mindset and ideas," Taylor said.

"I went down and had the trial week with him, and then he came up to Scotland a couple of weeks later and we just hit it off, we just really gelled. He stayed with me for the weekend and we got to really know each other and speak in depth about what we want to do, moving forward."

Taylor: on his new trainer

Undisputed champ Taylor – who also has an option to fight 135lbs king Teofimo Lopez – will have a new approach hooking up with trainer Joe McNally after two years with Ben Davison. The champion, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I'm excited for this new chapter in my career. It's a nice, new, refreshing start. I got to meet him a couple of months back, got talking to him and bounced ideas off him, and I liked the way his mind works, his mindset and ideas.

"I went down and had the trial week with him, and then he came up to Scotland a couple of weeks later and we just hit it off, we just really gelled. He stayed with me for the weekend and we got to really know each other and speak in depth about what we want to do, moving forward.

"I just think I needed a little bit of a change, and it's no aim or dig or anything at Ben or the lads in the gym, I just needed a change. I felt like I was getting a bit stale, and just picking up little bad habits, and taking away from my main attributes and my main strengths.

"I'm happy with the choice that I made, and Ben and I are still very amicable and still speak. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank him, actually, for the work that we did together. He helped me achieve my dream of becoming undisputed world champion, and what a job he did. We got the tactics right, and everything was perfect.

"It was just more of a change for me, myself and getting my head right, getting back to my usual mindset. I feel comfortable with the surroundings I've got now.”

What is the likelihood of Taylor coming in a pound or two over on the scales, if he is indeed struggling with the weight? He has given up his other three titles anyway and seems to be looking to welterweight. It wouldn't be the most surprising thing to happen.
