ALI IZMAYLOV TAKES ON RADIVOJE KALAJDZIC ON SHOBOX IN OCTOBER

Unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Ali Izmaylov will face former world title challenger Radivoje Kalajdzic on October 21, Showtime officially announced on Friday’s ShoBox telecast.

No word yet on where the fight will take place, but it will air live on Showtime and headline a ShoBox telecast.

Izmaylov (9-0, 6 knockouts), who is originally from Malgobek, Russia and now resides in Detroit, Michigan, defeated Eric Murguia by unanimous decision in a clash of unbeaten light heavyweights. The win over Murguia took place over four months after Izmailov stopped Abraham Tebes after the third round. Tebes also entered the Izmailov bout unbeaten.

The 29-year-old is promoted by Dmitriy Salita, a former world title challenger who also promotes Ring women’s middleweight champion Claressa Shields, junior middleweight contender Shohjahon Ergashev, and heavyweight contender Otto Wallin.

Salita is very high on Izmaylov.

“Ali is one of the most exciting and gifted contenders (in) all of boxing,” Salita told The Ring last week, confirming the news of the Izmaylov-Kalajdzic fight. “He is a force to be reckoned with in the light heavyweight division. He keeps getting better (after) every fight. His natural gifts, power and desire to fight and be the best is refreshing. I am excited about the future.”

Izmaylov’s last four bouts have taken place in the United States after fighting in Russia, Belarus, and Latvia.

Kalajdzic (27-2, 19 KOs) stopped Ernest Amuzu in the opening round of his last bout on May 14. He has won his last three bouts since losing by knockout to IBF world titleholder Artur Beterbiev in May 2019.

The 31-year-old, who is originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina and currently resides in Saint Petersburg, Florida, lost his first fight as a pro by split-decision to Marcus Browne in a fight many thought Kalajdzic did enough to win.

Kalajdzic is promoted by Lou DiBella.

Ali Izmailov-Radivoje Kalajdzic To Headline ‘ShoBox’ Tripleheader 10/21 In Atlantic City

Emerging light heavyweight Ali Izmailov is set to take what, at least on paper, appears to be his toughest test October 21.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the unbeaten Russian contender will meet Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic in a 10-round main event Showtime will televise from Bally’s Grand Ballroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Izmailov-Kalajdzic fight will headline a “ShoBox: The New Generation” tripleheader that night.

The 29-year-old Izmailov (9-0, 6 KOs) is ranked seventh among the WBC’s light heavyweight contenders, ninth by the IBF and 11th by the WBO.

The 31-year-old Kalajdzic (27-2, 19 KOs) is ranked seventh by the WBO. The Serbian veteran also has faced a higher level of opposition than Izmailov.

Russian knockout artist Artur Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs), the IBF, WBC and WBO 175-pound champion, knocked out Kalajdzic in the fifth round of their title fight in May 2019 at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California. Kalajdzic, of St. Petersburg, Florida, is 3-0 since Beterbiev beat him.

Kalajdzic’s only other loss was a debatable defeat to former WBA world light heavyweight champ Marcus Browne, who defeated Kalajdzic by split decision in an eight-round bout that took place in April 2016 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Browne (then 17-0), a southpaw from Staten Island, New York, dropped Kalajdzic in the first round, but Kalajdzic came back to send Browne to the canvas in the sixth round.

Izmailov easily out-pointed previously unbeaten Eric Murguia (14-1, 12 KOs), of Mission Hills, California, in his most recent fight, a 10-rounder August 10 at The Garden Theater in Detroit.

Showtime will air two eight-round bouts before Izmailov and Kalajdzic clash in the main event next month.

Junior middleweights Marquis Taylor (12-1-2, 1 KO), of Galena Park, Texas, and Detroit’s Marlon Harrington (8-0, 7 KOs) will square off in one of those fights. The other eight-rounder will match super middleweights Sean Hemphill (14-0, 8 KOs), a New Orleans native, and David Stevens (11-0, 8 KOs), of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Izmailov-Kalajdzic Off; Isaiah Steen-Sena Agbeko New ‘ShoBox’ Main Event For 10/21

Isaiah Steen has a new opponent and has been elevated into a “ShoBox: The New Generation” main event that’ll be televised October 21 from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Boxing Scene has learned Cleveland’s Steen (16-0, 12 KOs) has agreed to face Sena Agbeko (26-2, 21 KOs) in a 10-round fight that night at Bally’s Grand Ballroom. The unbeaten super middleweight prospect was supposed to encounter Elvis Figueroa (11-0, 7 KOs) in an eight-round “ShoBox” co-feature October 21, but the change occurred when Showtime’s original main event, a 10-round light heavyweight bout between Russia’s Ali Izmailov (9-0, 6 KOs) and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic (27-2, 19 KOs), was canceled because Izmailov contracted COVID-19 during training camp and withdrew.

What was supposed to be the opener of this three-bout broadcast – an eight-round super middleweight match in which New Orleans’ Sean Hemphill (14-0, 8 KOs) will face David Stevens (11-0, 8 KOs), of Reading, Pennsylvania – is now the co-feature. The telecast will now begin with another eight-rounder – Marquis Taylor (12-1-2, 1 KO), a junior middleweight from Galena Park, Texas, against Detroit’s Marlon Harrington (8-0, 7 KOs).

The 26-year-old Steen will end a 14-month layoff when he faces the hard-hitting Agbeko. Steen hasn’t boxed since his 10-round, unanimous-decision victory over Kalvin Henderson 14 months ago in a “ShoBox” main event.

Steen defeated a then-unbeaten Henderson (15-2-1, 11 KOs), of Fayetteville, Arkansas, by scores of 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94 in July 2021 at Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The 30-year-old Agbeko, a native of Ghana who resides in Nashville, Tennessee, has won three straight fights since Russian super middleweight contender Vladimir Shishkin (13-0, 8 KOs) soundly defeated him on points in February 2021 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Shishkin’s win against Agbeko was televised as part of the “ShoBox” series as well.

Press Release

More changes to the upcoming Showtime televised ShoBox tripleheader, which occurs on Friday night. The event takes place at Bally’s Atlantic City Casino and Resort, site of the first ShoBox years ago, for the second time in two months.

A battle of undefeated super middleweights, between Sean Hemphill (14-0, 8 KOs) and David Stevens (11-0, 8 KOs), has been scrapped from the card.

In the main event, fast-rising blue-chip prospect Isaiah Steen (16-0, 12 KOs) will get a chance to slingshot himself up the super middleweight rankings when he takes on dangerous power-puncher Sena Agbeko (26-2, 21 KOs).

Both Steen and Agbeko are ShoBox alumni as the heavy-handed Agbeko faces Steen in the 10-round main event at 168 pounds.

In the newly updated co-feature, perennial spoiler and ShoBox alum Marquis Taylor (12-1-2, 1 KO) is taking on undefeated Marlon Harrington (8-0, 7 KOs) in an eight-round super welterweight attraction that was originally set to open up the telecast.

The updated opening bout will now see an intriguing eight-round clash between undefeated heavyweight prospects Elvis Garcia (12-0, 9 KOs) and Moses Johnson (8-0-1, 7 KOs).

Garcia had a successful amateur career winning U.S. National Silver and two Bronze medals and also garnered two more Bronze at the U.S. Olympic Qualifiers in 2015. Johnson won the 2015 New York Golden Gloves.

Wow ! 8-2 and 7-3 for the African-I didn't see that coming. I had Steen edging it but a draw would have been ok, too.

Moses Johnson Upsets Elvis Garcia By Majority Decision In ‘ShoBox’ Opener

Moses Johnson pulled off an upset Friday night in what was the toughest fight of his four-year pro career.

Johnson withstood Elvis Garcia’s power and activity to beat the Mexican heavyweight prospect on two scorecards and won an eight-round majority decision. Judges Jacklyn Atkins (77-75) and Joseph Pasquale (77-75) scored their back-and-forth fight for Johnson, who fought off fatigue in the later rounds to remain competitive with the aggressive Garcia.

Judge Mark Consentino scored their encounter even, 76-76, but Johnson, of Huntington, New York, improved to 9-0-1 (7 KOs) in the action-packed opener of a “ShoBox: The New Generation” tripleheader Showtime aired from Bally’s Grand Ballroom. Garcia (12-1, 9 KOs) hadn’t fought in 14 months, in part due to a failed test for a performance-enhancing drug test earlier this year, but he was the best opponent of Johnson’s career.

It was evident entering the eighth and final round that Johnson-Garcia was a competitive contest that featured several potential swing rounds judges could’ve scored either way.

Johnson kept coming forward during the eighth and final round, but he couldn’t hurt Garcia with mostly arm punches. Garcia caught Johnson with two right uppercuts within a 30-second span in the final round and seemingly built on his lead.

Garcia backed Johnson into the ropes and drilled him with another right uppercut 20 seconds into the seventh round. Johnson held Garcia after absorbing that shot.

Garcia blasted Johnson with a right uppercut out of a clinch that made Johnson stumble with about 20 seconds to go in the sixth round. Johnson appeared to tire in the sixth round, but he tried his best to fend off a relentless Garcia’s aggression.

Garcia caught Johnson with a straight right barely 30 seconds into the sixth round.

Garcia and Johnson continued to fight at a very fast pace in a back-and-forth fifth round. A left hook by Garcia got Johnson’s attention early in the fifth round, but Johnson quickly fired back with a straight right hand that backed up Garcia.

Johnson and Garcia traded hard shots from close distances during a competitive fourth round in which both fighters landed flush shots and to the body.

Garcia’s right hand knocked Johnson off balance 1:05 into what was a strong third round for Garcia, who consistently connected to Johnson’s head and body. Garcia hammered away at Johnson’s body during the opening minute of the third round.

Garcia complained of a low blow, which drew a warning from Vera with just under 40 seconds on the clock in the second round. A right uppercut by Garcia turned Johnson’s head around 50 seconds into the second round.

Garcia and Johnson fought at a fast pace throughout the first round, when they stood and traded hard shots. A right hand by Garcia made Johnson take a step backward with just under 1:15 on the clock in the opening round.

Johnson drilled Garcia with a left hook a little less than 40 seconds into their fight. Another left hook by Johnson landed several seconds later.

Marquis Taylor Out-Works Marlon Harrington, Wins Unanimous Decision In ‘ShoBox’ Co-Feature

Marquis Taylor got credit for his work this time around.

Eight months after his dubious draw with Paul Kroll, the junior middleweight won an eight-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Detroit native Marlon Harrington on Friday night. Judges Jacklyn Atkins (79-73), Anthony Lundy (80-72) and Joseph Pasquale (79-73) all scored their fight for Taylor by wide distances.

The 28-year-old Taylor, of Galena Park, Texas, improved to 13-1-2 (1 KO). Harrington dropped to 8-1 (7 KOs).

Showtime aired Taylor’s victory as the co-feature of a “ShoBox: The New Generation” tripleheader from Bally’s Grand Ballroom.

Taylor fought for the first time since he settled for an eight-round majority draw with Kroll, an undefeated prospect from Philadelphia, on February 18 in Orlando, Florida. Taylor seemed to out-work Kroll (9-0-1, 6 KOs) in that bout, but he only won on one scorecard (80-72, 75-77, 76-76).

Comfortably in front on all three scorecards Friday night, an opportunistic Taylor connected with a right-left combination toward the end of the eighth and final round. Taylor landed a right and then a left inside and backed up Harrington with just over a minute to go in their fight.

Taylor’s right hand knocked Harrington off balance with just under 40 seconds on the clock in the seventh round. Harrington drilled Taylor with a right hand about 10 seconds earlier, but Taylor was the more effective fighter for much of the seventh round.

A stiff jab by Taylor moved Harrington backward with just under a minute to go in the sixth round. A right-left combination by Taylor connected early in the sixth round.

Taylor and Harrington traded right hands during several sequences in the second half of the fifth round, yet neither fighter affected his opponent with those punches. Harrington’s left hand landed as Taylor backed into the ropes with about 1:35 on the clock in the fifth round.

Harrington switched to a southpaw stance in the middle minute of the fourth round, only to have Taylor promptly hit him with a straight right hand. Harrington landed a right as Taylor retreated with about 30 seconds on the clock in the fourth round.

Taylor nailed Harrington with a right hand early in the fourth round, but Harrington shook his head to indicate that shot didn’t affect him.

A left-right-left combination by Harrington connected while Taylor was backed against the ropes with about 45 seconds remaining in the third round.

Taylor connected with a straight right hand as Harrington moved backward with 1:15 to go in the second round. Harrington had difficulty hitting the elusive Taylor with clean punches during the second round.

Taylor landed a right hand that backed up Harrington with about 40 seconds to go in the first round. Neither fighter landed many clean punches during those opening three minutes.

Sena Agbeko Shocks Isaiah Steen, Wins Unanimous Decision in ShoBox Main Event

Isaiah Steen seemed to think taking Sena Agbeko’s flushest punches and consistently utilizing his jab was enough to win their 10-round fight Friday night.

All three judges disagreed with Steen and the previously unbeaten super middleweight prospect’s team.

They favored Agbeko’s aggression throughout their bout and his harder connections during their “ShoBox: The New Generation” main event at Bally’s Grand Ballroom. Judges Mark Consentino (97-93), Anthony Lundy (96-94) and Joseph Pasquale (98-92) all scored their fight for Agbeko, a Ghanian-born, Tennessee-based power puncher who took this fight on barely two weeks’ notice.

The win was career-changing for the 30-year-old Agbeko (27-2, 21 KOs), a Nashville resident who lost a 10-round unanimous decision to unbeaten Russian 168-pound contender Vladimir Shishkin (13-0, 8 KOs) in his last “ShoBox” main event in February 2021. Cleveland’s Steen suffered the first defeat of his career (16-1, 12 KOs) in what was the 26-year-old boxer’s first fight in the 15 months since he out-pointed then-unbeaten Kalvin Henderson (15-2-1, 11 KOs) in another “ShoBox” main event.

“Steen is the first undefeated fighter that I’ve beaten,” Agbeko told Boxing Scene. “I’ve been working really hard, just staying behind the scenes and looking for the stage to prove that I’m world championship material. I got this fight on short notice, but like I said, I’ve always been training hard. I’ve been doing this since I started boxing 11 years ago in Ghana.

“So, to get this opportunity, to be able to show up and get it done, I’m very happy. … I’m just happy that I’ve gotten some vindication for all the hard work that I’ve put in behind the scenes. I’m very excited to be in this spot and I’m excited for what’s ahead in the future.”

CompuBox credited Agbeko for landing only two more punches overall than Steen (75-of-308 to 73-of-365). According to CompuBox, Agbeko landed many more power shots (45-of-142 to 18-of-78) and Steen connected on almost twice as many jabs (55-of-287 to 30-of-166).

Their fight was competitive and although Agbeko landed the harder punches during the first nine rounds, he still pressed for a knockout in the 10th and final round. He caught Steen with a right hand that made him hold with about 1:15 on the clock in the 10th round and another flush right that initiated a clinch by Steen toward the end of the final round.

Agbeko’s aggression kept Steen on his back foot for most of the ninth round, when he tied up Agbeko several times. A right and then a left by Agbeko backed up Steen and made him hold about 1:15 into the ninth round.

Agbeko remained aggressive throughout the eighth round, but Steen tried to fend him off with his jab and took his power punches without incident. A right hand by Agbeko hit Steen as he moved toward the ropes early in the eighth round.

Steen countered Agbeko with an overhand right and moved out of his opponent’s punching range with 1:20 to go in the seventh round. Steen drilled Agbeko with a short right hand on the inside early in the seventh round.

Steen’s right hand landed to the side of Agebko’s head with just over 50 seconds on the clock in the sixth round, but Agbeko pressed forward. Agbeko caused Steen to hold him after he landed a right hand early in the sixth round.

Steen worked well off his jab during the fifth round and dealt well with Agbeko’s pressure during those three minutes.

Steen’s jab made Agbeko reset his feet with just over 30 seconds on the clock in the fourth round. A left-right combination by Agbeko landed with just over a minute to go in the fourth round and made Steen retreat.

A left-right combination by Agbeko got Steen’s attention and made him move away from his hard-hitting opponent five seconds before the third round ended. Steen’s stiff jab knocked Agbeko off balance 50 seconds into the third round.

Agbeko connected with a right hand on the inside with just over 30 seconds on the clock in the second round. A sweeping left hook by Agbeko landed early in the second round, when Steen tried to work off his jab and moved away from the stalking Agbeko.

A short right hand by Agbeko caught Steen as Steen bent forward toward the end of the first round. Steen tried to hold Agbeko after taking that punch and caused them to tumble to the canvas.

Agbeko caught Steen with a right hand about 55 seconds into the opening round as Steen backed toward the ropes.

Isaiah Steen Stunned By Loss To Agbeko: "The Scoring Was Messed Up!"

“The scoring was messed up, for real,” said Steen, the half-brother of 2016 U.S. Olympian and SHOBOX alum Charles Conwell. “He wasn’t going to touch me. I was throwing more jabs, connecting and landing more shots. I don’t see what the judges saw, but I definitely won that fight. They were scoring his blocks. His big punches were blocks and weren’t landing. When they said 98-92 I thought that was my score. He wasn’t touching me.”
