Kid Kaplan

Post by Bob »

Kid Kaplan had always said that he had a number of pro fights under the name of Benny Miller. An early article stated that he and a friend had moved to New York for a year and he had the four fights listed on his present record as occurring in Jersey City. Furthermore, he also said that he had fought on the same day as the Dempsey-Willard fight (without any real specifics). After some research I have come up with the following, which I believe are three of the four fights he had claimed (cannot find anything for the Happy Gorman fight yet):

May 16, 1919 - Benny Miller (of New York) D 4 Young Jack Dempsey - Long Branch, NJ (Ocean Park Casino)

June 13, 1919 - Benny Miller (of Staten Island) D 4 Phil Black - Perth Amboy, NJ (Listos A.C.)

August 5, 1919 - Benny Miller (124 lbs. of Staten Island) D 4 Tommy White - Bayonne, NJ (Bayonne A.A. Pavilion)

Also, on July 4, 1919, Benny Miller (of Staten Island) and Willie Curry recreated the Dempsey-Willard fight for a group at a hospital in Staten Island shortly after the action occurred. Miller (Kaplan) and Curry were sparring partners.

What is the general consensus on whether these are three of the missing Kaplan bouts?
