John Mugabi vs. Julian Jackson
A fight between these two sluggers would be awesome to witness. Both obviously could pack some of the hardest punches that the 160 lb division has ever seen. I think this fight had a chance to happen if Mugabi would have beaten McClellan in their fight for the vacant WBO title back in 1991. At the time of this, Jackson just recently won the vacant WBC title.
An interesting thing I see is Jackson dropped Terry Norris in the 2nd round, but Norris dropped Mugabi in the 1st. Logistically that says Jackson would drop Mugabi, but that isn't always right.
Any thoughts on this one?

Would have been a fantastic match-up...at either MW or at JMW (where both were champions).
My pick would be J. Jackson KO/TKO inside of 3 rounds - Anything past 4 rounds and I'd say Mugabi would start to land too often and TKO Jackson at that point -

That's exactly how I think the fight would have gone, too. Nobody was safe in the ring with The Hawk, not even Mugabi.meade95 wrote:AndreWardFan2006 wrote:A fight between these two sluggers would be awesome to witness. Whatver about Jackson being the favorite POST Hagler, I see Mugabi being very very hard for Jackson to beat in 1986. It took a helluva effort from the Iron chinned Hagler to take Mugabi out. No way Jackson would have taken those shots, and they were lightning fast with great accuracy, not just wild swings. 1986 Mugabi knocks out any version of a 160lb Jackson, and knocks him out early
I'd bet on Mugabi and I agree with barry and walsh both to some degree. I just think Mugabi would be durable enough to take a few to get what he needed in and get the job done.
But it would not be a safe bet by any means.....I still get nightmares watching what Jackson did to Graham he always had the ability to end it if he got to you. Jackson could beat anyone if he gets the opportunity....I think Mugabi would have a better than even chance of denying him that ultimate opportunity, before getting to Jackson himself.

Many may disagree with me, but I'll go for Mugabi KO1.
It's a matter who lands first. That's all. People may say Julian was the better boxer, more techinical etc, but IMO, this would have been irrelevant had they fought.
Both @ their peak, I favour "The Beast"! Mugabi had a good chin (watch the Hagler fight before saying he did not). Mugabi was never the same fighter following his defeat to Hagler. Marvin properly punished him.
When Mugabi fought and lost to Norris, McClellan, he was shot as a fighter. Boy, did John give a gutsy performance against Hagler!

Ahh. But likewise....No way would Mugabi have taken all those shots from Jackson that he did manage to take from Hagler.walshb wrote:Whatver about Jackson being the favorite POST Hagler, I see Mugabi being very very hard for Jackson to beat in 1986. J. Jackson hit harder then Hagler (without question). If the Hawk connected as frequently on Mugabi's chin as Hagler did.....Mugabi goes out!
I like J. Jackson at 154 .....at 160...I like J. Jackson inside of 4 rounds. If it goes past 4 rounds I like Mugabi.

It's hard to say because I think it would come down to which one landed cleanly first.
If forced to pick, I'd side with Jackson.

Nobody is knocking out Hagler.walshb wrote:Do any of you guys believe that if Jackson connected flush with a peak Hagler, would Marvin be beat. I think Hagler's chin would survive. What about Toney who also had a granite chin
If an ageing & slow Hagler can take flush shots from fresh & prime punchers like Mugabi & Hearns whilst barely blinking, Jackson is knocking him out.
