Dean Powell

Post by stujones »

This might sound like a thick question, but does Dean do any hands on trainer/corner work anymore? I know he has suffered some criticism as a matchmaker for FW, but I was watching some old tapes and he seemed to have the making of a fantastic coach.. a very good motivator who seemed to get alot out of fighters. I particularly remember the progress Paul Lloyd made under Powell. He's not old and I would like to see him more helping out fighters more.... I was thinking he could be the tonic for Danny Williams.

Barry McGuigan was particularly of high praise for Dean when he was forging a reputation.

Sorry if he is working the corner for some fighters, just I have hardly seen him on the box in that capacity.

He is still working corners, saw him recently although my memory is not that good I can't remember who. He's still orange.

I saw him looking a bit Hulk Hogan esque being interviewed on ITV - but he was in a suit at the time.

I remember when Powell first arrived on the boxing scene. There was a lot of talk about him being a sweeper upper at a gym who managed to work his way into the corner handling the stool and spit bucket. Now he appears to be a respected coach. Good luck to the fella if this is the case. He obviously kept his ears open and learned from the more experienced coaches that he worked with. Personally, I think coaches are limited in what they can teach fighters if they have never fought themselves. But I do think they can play a role on the conditioning and the motivational side of the game.

He does some corner work with Macca (Darren McDermott). Although Ronnie Brown is Macca's head trainer, Powell comes in an puts his opinions in.

He is McDermott's manager, as well.
