Young Griffo - Born in Bendigo, Victoria not Millers Point or Sofala

I've just purchased the new Young Griffo Biography book titled "Young Griffo" by Steve Hile. In this book Steve Hile states that Young Griffo was born in Bendigo on 23/07/1871 not in Millers Point or Sofala. Griffo's father said in an interview in the Australian Ring magazine in August 17, 1932 that Young Griffo was born in Bendigo.

There is some discussion about the details (date/location) of his birth, it has also been reported he was born at sea. Apart from the statement of his father, does the writer list any additonal sources?

He claims that Griffo's most prominent historian, Raymond Swanwick agrees that Bendigo is the the most likely, but doesn't go into great detail. Apparently Sofala and the "born at sea" story have been proven to be incorrect. Also he says that Griffo had no birth certificate. To quote Griffo's fathers interview " I hate you people say my boy was born on the 'Rocks Milllers Point, that is not right, he was born in Bendigo".

The Book "Australian Boxing World Champions" by Brian S Ingram, also says that Young Griffo was born in Bendigo, not Millers Point. Maybe his record should be changed to Bendigo.
